Shaping Policy: 12.5% Download/ 6.25% P2P seems to be a permanent state now with AH. Clients are stuck with a crippled service with no clear indication of when things will stabilise and return to any semblance of normality. If you need an ISP to update your FB status, tweet what you had for breakfast or refresh this forum for news then AH is no worse than any of the others ISPs out there. Don't expect to run OS updates when it suits you, download Steam purchases at a reasonable rate or even stream HD videos.

I will start start looking for an alternate ISP, and I will adjust my recommendations to clients accordingly. We are definitely pulling the short end of this "sweet spot hunt" straw.

Yeah the fact that I can't download printer software (which is about 500mb) during the day, even on a weekend, is just stupid

The problem I have with the AH model is this.
If you take a Business account, you have a 24 hour unshaped, unthrottled account. Yes I know we pay more for the Business account.

However, I was politely reminded the other day that the Home uncapped account was for after hours use and therefore shaped and if you use it for anything that relates to an income, you should get a business account.
I do agree with that sentiment.

However, Home accounts are shaped till early morning hours and you are lucky if you have an unshaped line from 02:00 - 06:00.

Yet it is continuously mentioned that Home uncapped are seeing lighter shaping than previously, due to some IPC upgrade.
It is not lifted, only lighter.

A Home uncapped in my opinion, should be totally unshaped from 17:00 - 07:00 and subjected to shaping during business hours, should the network demand it.

You can then also argue that a business runs from 07:00 -17:00 and should be unshaped.
From 17:00 - 07:00 that account should be shaped.
Should your business hours fall outside the normal business hours charge a double the Home uncapped account premium to have 24 Hours unshaped access.
If your hours is during our night time you can use a Home uncapped account.

This is how the IS star rating works. Even if you are on 2stars for day time usage, at around 17:00 or 18:00 it becomes almost unshaped again and completely usable.

Would definitely prefer that

I see what you getting at. It makes 20 times more sense but 1 thing i know for a fact is that business accounts generate most of the revenue so shaping business accounts after hours wont work customers will leave and AH will lose a ton of $$$$ so...

In the UK you can get accounts like that though.

What is shaped during the day? Just non-realtime services?

Let's just say you don't wanna get to two stars. But on 3 stars everything works like a bomb still and downloads between 00:00 and 06:00 don't count towards your star rating.

What happens with 2 stars? And how would one get that rating?

Basically the more you download during the day, the lower your star rating gets. 5stars is perfect, 4very good, 3 is good, 2 stars is bad.

Regardless of your star rating though at 17:00 to 18:00 your internet is fine. and downloads between 00:00 and 18:00 don't count towards your star rating.

So if you are at work during the day and schedule your downloads the account works well.

I'm on the Web Africa Business account that also uses this system.

When are we going to see some better pricing on the Uncapped Bundles... I am a loyal afrihost user and would never move away BUT when I joined it was the BEST service at the BEST price, now it is still the BEST service at a lacklustre price. I'm on a paltry 1Mb line but if I go for R100 more with you guys I go up to 2Mb. If I pay Mweb a R100 more I go up to 4Mb. (and get a free router). What's up?

We definitely want to review Bundle pricing - but we'd ultimately like to build a better system so we can offer the best possible prices without developing a complex matrix of bundles and offerings. It's confusing for us, and for clients.

We have some ideas on how we'd like to re-deploy this. As soon as I have an ETA on this, I'll let everyone know :)

I'm sorry that you are having such a poor experience. I know our aim is to provide a better overall experience, but right now we're seeing that demand continues to escalate, and we need to make sure that we always protect priority real time speeds and low latency on the network. Unfortunately that does result in shaping on P2P, but all realtime services should perform well, especially if we're shaping additionally to ensure that.

If you're having problem with streaming, for example, we definitely need to look closer at this :(

Could you PM me?

Well, I only add the music I am listening to, and listen frequently to, in offline mode.

I know what you mean, there's just not enough space to listen to all the great music out there. I sometimes have to restrict to only Beatles or Pink Floyd albums for the day - Sgt Pepper and Dark Side of the Moon, classics :)

Anyway, enough about awesome music - must stay on topic :)

I can definitely see how that may make sense, but also remember that some heavy users are going to leave work and start downloading immediately when they get home. We see the network peak just after 5 (especially on Uncapped and P2P demand) so we also need to make sure that it's viable. We could tell everyone they're unshaped, but high contention is going to make for a horrible experience, and nothing will be very pleasant, especially not realtime services due to intermittent or very high latency.

AfriMan, in this day and age of always connected, and multiple devices per household, I fail to see how applying upgrades and downloading software is not seen as a realtime service. A 200MB legitimate download takes over 2 hours and there is a constant promise of increased capacity and things actually seem to be getting worst.

How can it peak then if they are being shaped? Surely the heavy users are the ones who are being shaped the most, so there is no way they could download heavily at that time. If I am being shaped from 0730 to 0230 at 12.5%/6.25% and I am only a moderate user, then how could they possibly be able to do any downloading at that time? I am sure 20 kbps is not going to strain the network excessively.

"We could tell everyone they're unshaped, but high contention is going to make for a horrible experience, and nothing will be very pleasant, especially not realtime services due to intermittent or very high latency."

That is simply because you are heavily oversubscribed

AH could also tell people that they are selling a 4Mbps Home Uncapped account that works full speed between 02:00 - 06:00 with priority for real time protocols for ONLY R397.00.
That is in affect what you are saying, because it does not sound like the Home uncapped account will ever be unshapped apart from the early hours.

Why not drop the Home accounts and create only Business accounts with the current business price plan?

Then all your accounts will be unshaped or can can the AH model only work if all Home accounts are semi permanently shaped, but Business account have freedom of the city for 24 hours a day?
How can the Business accounts have that privacy? Is it due to their higher monthly rate or are they subsidized by shaping Home accounts into a 02:00 -06:00 account?
