Afrihost Uncapped ADSL Feedback (Pt3)

They will deny shaping and they would be right.

Contention, now that's a whole other ballgame.

Unshaped = http=p2p=nntp=ftp = contention = you get whatever we give you.

EDIT: but if downloads are slow but speedtest is full speed, that's shaping, on a business account, explain that AH :wtf:

It's not always that simple. It depends on the download, it depends on whether it has a P2P nature, which means that performance is largely determine by the peer (seeder) rather than the network.

We test business accounts extensively to check performance and at the moment capped and business accounts are performing at premium levels in all regions, to my knowledge.

Assuming this is on a 4 or 10Mbps line, so that is pretty slow. Depends on the torrent though - some files just suck because the seeder is limiting their torrents.

Have you tested your throughput on the line with something like BitMeter OS?

Its not slow its downloading at a full 10meg. Im gonna try that BitMeter os :) then ill test throughput. Also 2 quick questions Afriman. The check systems to see the max speed in my area is only 4Mbps but yet im on a 10Mbps line and I should be able to get vdsl but the checkers sre not updating. Second question: im on an MSAN so im told I can get upto 40Mbps but my snr now on 10Mbps is only 21db, would a vdsl router push my snr up if I want to achieve a higher speed? uploadfromtaptalk1399283128721.jpg

Does Afri use a star rating policy or is the network shaped when busy?

Also, what's considered good habits? Obviously no downloading between 9-5, but what about after? Can downloads start at 6 or should it wait until midnight? What about weekends?

LOL. Never wanted to get rid of you. At the end of the day, I think our conversations benefit everyone. You ask a lot of great questions, and I hope that others read our convos and feel like they have some answers.

Unless we're buying OpenWeb, I don't Vanilla Uncapped is our product ;)

Small 'v'. :D But hey, if you'd rather I refer to it as home [-]uncapped[/-] shaped-to-****...

I've not had reason to bitch with the business account - it's running really nicely - although I'm sure you'll understand that I am a bit salty over paying nearly twice the amount I'm accustomed to, only to maintain previous service levels.

Awesome - hey it's your account, use it!! ;)

Thanks, I will but I felt like I went overboard. Did 25 gigs on my 2meg line :D

I downloaded most of my catch ups and over the next few weeks I should only average about a gig day...

No need to abuse something for the sake of it :)

EDIT: my projected usage for the month is 200 gigs :D. I normally only use ~100 gigs

p2p gets unshaped as quickly as they can unshape. Recently its been hovering around 10pm but I noticed last week it coming down to 6-7pm.

weekends is pretty much unshaped....

Thanks. I see shaping is managed similar to OW. Does Afri have a free news server?

It's pretty hard to say with the info we have. If Telkom haven't updated their systems, it's really hard to predict. Remember that you're either moving to a new exchange (if you're on a DSLAM) so there's no way of knowing. If you're already on an MSAN as you suspect, chances are SNR will drop becuase your modulating at a higher frequency, and distance becomes a much bigger factor as you increase line speed.

We don't use the star rating system. You could say that our system has some similarities, but my experience with star ratings is that a "throttle' is applied to all services, including browsing and gaming, and being on one star can become unusable. We never shape realtime services on our system, but the principle of giving more bandwidth by demand according to usage patterns is somewhat similar.

@Afriman is this normal?afri.jpg

I was away for the weekend, came home to 400mb usage and that shaping policy...I just keep getting told "Afrihost will shape when the network is under demand" etc etc. Well then the network is under constant stress because my shaping hasn't changed.

Which region are you in?

I ran this tool, with my afrihost account it had 1500ms+ on the ping, with the webafrica account it was 25ms

However, I played around with the modem and switched the phone line pair to use from inner to outer and now i have sub 13ms ping.

I have no idea how changeing the pair used can make a difference as its in the same cable...

Normally when you create a new session it "hides" the fault but will creep back in over time.

I'm just going to reproduce my response to email support here, would appreciate some advice:

Hi ***********,

I hope all is well,

I queried your account and you are unfortunately being shaped which could be causing the lag you are experiencing.

I also noticed you have a free 1GB capped package on your account. Please insert these details and advise if the lag issues persist as capped accounts do not get shaped. If the latency does decrease then it is shaping related.

You have 1GB free available on this account.

Hi

I will test with the capped gig when I have a chance, but I can almost assure you it will be perfect, as I have used them in the past with great success.

The uncapped was also absolutely perfect (the best I've ever seen, sub-200 to the EU region consistently) before this shaping thing kicked in.

Is game latency meant to be shaped along with P2P, etc? Surely it cannot have much of an impact on the network? If so, I'm going to be a little bit disgruntled, considering the not very large amount of data that led to this situation in the first place.

Which brings me to my next question:

A) How can shaping have kicked in already, as the projected useage for the month was, iirc, around 140 gigs? That's very very little on a 4 meg account, surely?

B) How does this work? Are there rolling windows? Will I be shaped for the rest of the month?

I appreciate any advice.

Thanks,

*********.
