I am positive that I was always syncing at around 4Mb..not sure of the exact numbers though. Definitely could not sync at 5 or 6 :) They started when I saw Telkom laying fibre near my house about 3 weeks ago.

From the numbers you mentioned, it didn't sound like you were syncing at a higher line speed.

Shaping policy: 50%/ 50% now... The joys :(

Sorry to see we're shaping more in the East now. It looks as though the South and East are experiencing a lot more demand, and hence more shaping. Looks like we're having to shape pretty steeply based on the current trends. Realtime services should still be at premium, because latencies don't seem to be higher than usual - which is good.

Let's hope our requested upgrades come soon :(

Sorry about that. We try to shape as little as possible at all times, but it always depends on the demand from clients at any given point.

If I can strongly encourage any clients in East and South (and the North) to always schedule torrents and downloads overnight wherever they can. It not only preserves capacity for priority services during peak, but also gives us 24 hour bandwidth usage, which makes it a lot easier for us to get upgrades in terms of motivating to management and MTN.

From the numbers you mentioned, it didn't sound like you were syncing at a higher line speed.

I think Telkom are throttling the new exchanges as you mentioned..I don't see why I should have to now upgrade line speed to 10Meg to achieve the 4Meg speeds I'm paying for and should be getting.

Agree, maybe the 40mb. I've been paying for a 10mb line but getting 4mb for more than 5 years, so what's a little more to get 20mb? The data will be the same.

If the line is through is, you get a pretty awesome deal on line rental. We're only asking R499 on 20Mbps and our 40Mbps is still a little cheaper :)

Definitely seeing a trend of increased demand on our side :(

Not great for existing clients but I have faith in you guys that you will get additional capacity soon for the East and South. I believe North is upgraded already :) Please Telkom or Afrihost push them to upgrade the remainder of your IPC's.... Please sir! :)

It's the 24th today. For all those waiting on pricing announcement, there are only a few hours left. Heavy shaping, based on the last few pages of this thread, should make it easier for you guys to decide.
At least if a portion of us leaves, shaping should be lifted for you guys.

AfriMan - local latency is fine on speed tests?

26ms is not ideal hey, especially if it's a server in your same city. I would expect 14-16ms if all is well. From PE to Cape Town should be pretty fast cos there's a dedicated fibre link which runs at like 10Gbps or something crazy like that :(

Sorry - not saying that it's bad - but maybe not ideal. Out of interest, what do other PE residents experience in terms of Cape Town ping?

Thanks for having faith in us - you have no idea how much that means to us. A little faith goes a long way in this business. I promise we won't let you down in the "returning the favour" department :)

I'm about 80km from PE and things are very sluggish for me ito browsing. That is excluding the shaping of 18%

Normally my ping is between 19 - 21ms.

That's a big jump. Let me check out my monitoring and see what I'm picking up for now :(

I'm picking up a spike in latency around 12 that should have settled by now. Otherwise we seeing very normal results this side.

Confirms when I reverse ping our "agent" in Cape Town.

If I could give you my DSL bandwidth, i would.

No really I would, cos I'm running on LTE right now at 35Mbps average ;)

Download: 37.07 Mbps
Upload: 6.44 Mbps
Ping: 37 ms

Dude seriously.... Why tempt me like that :D

This was to the MTN server in Cape Town from PE (even though speed test indicates that my location is somewhere north)..I thought 26ms from PE to Cpt wasn't too shabby?

Oh and according to the website - The fibre link between Cpt and PE is not yet active :)
