As for vdsl I remember reading that vdsl data is cheaper to provision. It's been mentioned in the forum before. I think it's because they excluded ipc so a more direct connection.

No, I was told that it's the mini-dslam port that is the limting factor.

My line stats say I can achieve 12mb:

Mode: ADSL_G.dmt
Traffic Type: ATM
Status: Up
Link Power State: L0

Downstream Upstream
Line Coding(Trellis): On On
SNR Margin (0.1 dB): 303 250
Attenuation (0.1 dB): 140 215
Output Power (0.1 dBm): 172 123

Same boat as you.

My attainable rate is 17mb/s, however the DP I connect to is only 4mb capable. Ah well. Have to wait for them to upgrade that.

That's something else then. Backhaul could definitely be a problem then.

Charl told me it's the card that only supports 4mb, never said anything about backhaul, a while back they dug the streets up for fiber so I doubt backhaul is an issue, it's a "software" thing, hence my original post.

Please find someone that is on G.dmt mode that is syncing higher than 4mb anywhere in SA, and I'll eat my hat, like Cope :D

D.Dmt works up to 6mb/s in SA. As supported by line as well btw.

I have already eaten my hat via PM :D

Now that I have evidence of other setup's above 4mb, only conclusion I can make is to believe Charl that my mini-dslam is the bottleneck :(

I put my request in for 40mb yonks ago (nevermind crying for 10mb), but according to TelkomZA, there are no immediate plans to upgrade to MSAN.

I guess I can only look on the bright side and be grateful I don't suffer from congestion!

I have higher than acceptable latency from the third hop.
It' been fine for a few weeks now, this just started this evening.

What's worrying, (and the way I read this is the 3rd hop is the IPC), capped has top priority on the network, and if that is experiencing contention, then AH (MTN) have hit the ceiling, but like I said, what's really worrying is that this is happening over the weekend when demand is supposed to be lower!

I'm hoping there's just an issue with the network somewhere, and there is an explanation about what's happening, and is temporary.

If that is the case, then that is a good thing as then I have faith that things will return to normal :)

I'm just very concerned (and is holding me back with me building faith in this MTN network), as I've lost count how many times MTN has had latency spikes on their network, and add authentication problems for more than 24 hours aswell) that this keeps happening and is making it very easy for me to stay away!

On the d.Gmt issue. I have the same thing I think. Modem stats tells me u can get 12mbps. But max is 4mbps. But I am only using 2mbps at the moment. Might be that certain exchanges have lower limits based on number of users or something.
