Dunno if anyone saw this...

From Unotelly.com

We are currently investigating reports of heavy buffering in South Africa, especially during prime time. So far all research point to throttling of international traffic by either ISP or just the network pipelines themselves.

Please note that this is neither an issue with our DNS server or our proxy server. Here's why:

1. The links we proxy for Netflix and other services all go through the same servers everyone around the world uses, any server issues would have global effect and not just users of a particular region.

2. Our South African servers haven't even come close to reaching capacity, and they remain at the maximum speed we can possibly get.

3. We don't throttle, reduce speeds, or modify streaming traffic in any way so as to reduce quality.

4. We do not proxy or intercept stream links for Netflix. You are connected directly to Netflix servers when a movie starts.

We are actively looking into this issue to see if there is anything we can improve on our end. We will post any updates we find here.

Great post, but we knew this. It's only Afrihost trying to blame Unotelly.

Afrihost and Youtube. You guys need to get a new route to Youtube.

AfriMan. My original account has issues with Youtube (as you know), so I got a test account in the meantime from your critical care guys.

As of me writing this, Youtube is slow on:
Main account
Test account (critical care)
Free 1GB

Just changed to WebAfrica Free 1GB. Full speed.

You guys having an issue with Youtube? :erm:

EDIT: 11:50AM 13/07 - Youtube seems to be fine on the test account.
EDIT2: 8:00PM 13/07 - Youtube is back in the crapper.

Home Uncapped is a big joke  The naming is totally misleading  I'm leaving AH at the end of this month. Bye!

Shaping Policy: 18.8% Download/ 6.25% P2P

Does this mean i get 18.8% of my line speed or 71.2%?

Edit: nm getting 70kbps on 4mb line, ridiculous.

So we pay for less than 1/4 of our line speed? I don't recall ever being shaped on afrihost but then again i always assumed i was dloading from a crap filehost and never bothered checking. Switched to capped and its flying.

On Monday I want to see what AfriMan says about this "testing" that's taken, what, 2 weeks now?

Whoever he consults with at the office about this simply being "testing" is lying to him.

Yeah Youtube has been horrible since about Wednesday or something. It seems like it is connecting to some international address to stream the video instead of the local mirror that I'm sure it has always used.

Same here. Very disappointing :(

Agreed, streaming a 240p video that was buffering on a 4mbps line, no other desktop/laptop/tablet/phone using the internet beyond IM.

Is this testing area-specific? Was actually planning on switching from Telkom tomorrow. My free 1GB hits 900KB/s
