Quick question...is steam downloads shaped as well?
I don't know myself...but if this is the case then I might have to part ways with you Afrihost. I've only now installed steam and I've got about 80gb odd to download in installs...
Can anyone here verify the above for me?
Other than Twitch.tv streaming being pretty poor during peak hours, this package is pretty awesome. Pings aren't as good as Telkom, but it's far more consistent, and downloads fly. Only problem now is that I am shaped at 12.5%/6.25%. How exactly does that work? Am I shaped down 12.5%/6.25% or does that mean I only get that speed of the line? What are the thresholds for data on 10mbps?
There are apparently no thresholds. It is just a set shaping that Afrihost have implemented for all home uncapped accounts from 07:30 until 22:00 (closer 0:00 most of the time). The 12.5% means that you will only get 12.5% of your line speed. The max you can get with a 10 meg account is 1250kbps, or 625kbps on a p2p program (like torrents or nntp) while shaped.
Afrihost have stressed that real time services aren't affected by the shaping. The real services are browsing and streaming youtube. You can get full line speed on that. Anything else will be shaped. Unfortunately, youtube isn't running so well on the home uncapped accounts at the moment.
Everything is slow. Everything is shaped to death...except the accounts department. The system takes your money right on time, everytime.
Just browsing seems to have gotten slow.

Steam downloads should be shaped as a non-realtime service.
Remember that you can either turbocharge to pull your downloads down faster, or also schedule them to run overnight when downloading is optimal on Uncapped.
Cant download any updates via steam. Dota 2 needs update.
Turbo charges only last for an hour...and given PERFECT line and server conditions would equate to 1.4BG - 1.5GB being pulled down. Further assume that there is zero shaping from 22:00 till 07:00 (which is not the case at most you get maybe an hour or 3) which would give you another 13GB potentially.
So for me in this example to get all my games downloaded...would take me a week in PERFECT conditions. Given the reality it will take most likely closer to 2 weeks or more...
This to me is not acceptable. I can understand downloads etc etc etc being shaped to hell and gone and I GLADLY accept that...but game downloads? Which is a reason to get uncapped? No...
I'll see how the downloads go and reassess my ISP from next month. I've never needed to download from steam before and I'm generally happy with the uncapped performance even given the problems - but my needs it seems with gaming downloads won't be met. I also don't see why I'd need business or have to buy a lot of turbo charges (extra expense) for this...
Nothing against you Afriman or Afrihost! I understand this is the nature of the beast...but given the level of satisfaction I had last year this time...and where it's gone till now...
Ah well.
Just browsing seems to have gotten slow.
