Afrihost Uncapped ADSL Feedback (Pt3)

It definitely affects me when I have to download updates for projects. I don't care much about torrents during the day, that's what nights are for. Downloads being at a tenth is quite annoying.

This is what I have been telling AH in my tickets, but nobody is listening.
My 4MB MWEB line was more reliable and less shaped than the 10MB AH account.

4MB MWEB ADSL - average of 400GB to 450GB per month (virtually no shaping)
10MB AH ADSL - 210GB for the first 2 weeks, then shaped to 12.5% and 6.5% (17:00 till 08:30) for week 3... shaped at the same rate ALL DAY AND NIGHT for week 4 = 270GB (AND STILL SHAPED AS I AM WRITING THIS).

You cannot convince me that 210GB constitutes excessive use for such aggressive shaping... or am I missing something here????
:(

I'll second that. For the guys in the north, what is it like now after the additional capacity? Is shaping a long forgotten memory or is it more like something that happens now and then instead of a part of daily life?
From what I've read in this thread, shaping is almost non-existent in the North after the upgrades.

Yes.

It's not based on usage. It's based on available capacity. If you have a pipe that flows 10 units per second, and 10 people use it, each can have 1 unit per second. If 20 people use it, each can have 0.5 units per second. Etc. AH then starts shaping traffic so that realtime services get as much units per second, while download/p2p is shaped to get very little units per second.

Yes, IPC upgrades are coming soon (or so I hear).
I don't think anybody can use the word "soon". In my opinion AH does not have a clue when to expect the additional capacity and are only trying to pacify customers with the promise of increased capacity at some stage.

I can second this.
On my 1Mb Mweb uncapped account I use to achieve higher monthly usage than I did this month with AH 2Mb home uncapped. Shaping was way too heavy.

AH needs to get back to last year's standards.

I'm a new customer. I've used 22GB over the last 5 days, it says shaping is 18.8% Download/ 6.25% P2P ATM. Is this based on usage or is it a capacity problem on the network? On a 4meg uncapped package.

AH shaping policy punishes the user when capacity hasn't been planned properly (I can understand a few hours at peak demand, but not 18 hours a day), otherwise, everything is hunky dory.

After 3GB of usage today on a 2MB account, shaping is 50% download, 50% P2P. Seems to be fine so far.

The fact is, you can claim it's not usage based, but people who have done more are being shaped more.
Easy way to decrease demand, is to STOP signing up new customers, especially if you can't support the clients you already have.
Nevermind what AH "claims", my account is shaped ALL DAY LONG NOW, and has been since Sunday 15:00.
Oddly enough, my Business Uncapped has not been able to download torrents at more than 6kB/s since the same time Sunday.... coincidence???? Seems like specific user rate limiting!

..... oh, I'm sorry... "network management" :p

What about me getting what I paid for?????

By the way, I am an IT specialist and network consultant... I also so hosting, so I am well aware of how equipment works, and what configurations are possible...

If you only have a limited amount of bandwidth, you need to plan your utilisation correclty, and NOT over-sell your network. If you plan poorly, you can't say your users/clients are over-utilising, degrade the level of service and effectively penalise them for that.

...just saying... call a spade a spade ;)

Have to agree with this post, although I can't comment on the Business account.

My semi permanent shaping started on Friday. I'm excluding after midnight hours. I don't know what happens to shaping then, but from 08:00 - 23:45 or so, it is shaped to 18% and 6.5%.

Think I saw a 25% briefly yesterday.

From tomorrow I will start posting hourly screen shots of my shaping policy.

It is now 22:00 on a Friday night - I am still shaped on 10MB Uncapped:

Shaping Policy: 12.5% Download/ 6.25% P2P

It is now 22:00 on Friday night - Max. torrent speed on 10MB Business Uncapped:
5kB/s with 85 seeds and 212 peers CONNECTED.... not available.

So much for, "we only shape in the day when there is a high demand"

E I S H ... that's H A A A S H Boetie :(

And you complain. Freaken Telkom ass of the year company must still fix my week old line that has been down since Monday.
Paying for a service I am yet to receive! Hate the mother shatters!

Feel sorry for me. Had uncapped for 3 days. Downloaded 5 gig in 3 days. Now I'm shaped at 18% download 6% p2p.

Oh and afrihost your claim of 100% realtime service is never shaped is bull****. Netflix is a joke right now. Never had this issue on your capped data

No latency in the tracert to Canada. So that means shaping on realtime services.

Okay that sucks! So uncapped is not uncapped here.

AGREED!

I am still having issues. My Business Uncapped will not download torrents faster than 6kB/s, and my Dad's Uncapped 10MB is shaped to hell ALL THE TIME NOW. All tickets are still open, and nobody wants to take resposibility. All I want is for both lines to have their physical ports changed, but nothings is being done. I am told that MORE tests need to be done to justify such a request.

Hi Man,

Please go into the new clientzone - go to your business account, then click on protocol prioritization and turn it off :) Basically, PP shapes P2P Traffic :)
