Afrihost Uncapped ADSL Feedback (Pt3)

Hi Afriman

I have provided feedback to you in thread on various occasions. If you wish to contact me regards your network performance, your network department is welcome. All they need to do is to hook up a DSL line, play some games and browse international news sites and play their typically SD streams. Some of the more advanced speed tests which one can host off a cheap VPS in multiple locations will give you similar feedback.

Best Regards

Martin

I'll follow up with AfriMan on this, although I'd like a ticket to be logged so I can have the feedback passed onto our network guys. A lot of us play games, stream and grab content - if something was obviously wrong on the network it would be brought up and fixed up.

As I said, the best way to get your voice heard is to jot everything down in a ticket which can then be handed over to our network guys. Maybe you guys can work something out together :)

Streaming SD news from German sources is continually poor almost ever since the move to MTN. Same for streaming free to air media from the various German mediathek services. Many here have issues with streaming intl. content. Introducing a VPN (kindly trialed by Padraic hosting or my TunnelBear service) or changing to IS makes the buffering go away.

Feel free to ticket me off your service desk. If you cannot create the ticket, PM me to do so.

I think we both want to get to the bottom of this, in order to do so please create a support ticket with as much info as possible and we can take it from there.

I am not a Home uncapped customer any more, but did Afriman not say that all Home uncapped users are shaped to max?

In fact this is his answer on my post:

So you should also be shaped to 12.5 for http and 6.25 for P2P.
I might be wrong, as I said moved from this account a while back.

P.S
Using my calculations, I think you should theoretically get about 110kB/s on a 1 Mbps line? Might be even a bit less, depending on your line, but 110kB/s * 25% = 27.5kB/s.

So instead of 110kB/s you can only only download at 27.5kB/s on Http.

Not picking a fight, just saying that at at 25% shaping you lose 75% of your possible download speed and at 12.5% you lose 87.5% from possible Http speed and at 6.25% shaping on P2P you lose 93.75 of your possible download speed.

That is not really light shaping if you think about it.

I think 1mbps has a different shaping profile than 4 or 10mbps, seen it on the forum somewhere.

What seems to be the problem with Afrihost? The twitter guy says there is a fault on Telkom's side and yet "Test My Line" works, no problem!? Also, no update given on the problem?

what the actual f**k?! :wtf:

All ADSL profiles are shaped the same, it's only VDSL profiles that are shaped a little more, cos they obviously pull a lot more bandwidth.

I'd have to confirm if anyone reports being shaped less, it should not be the case during the peak period.

Telkom's service portal has been down for a while, definitely the whole of yesterday, so we have access to limited functions while the Test My Line function uses a different API access into their system.

Can you PM me so I can clear up any confusion?

Heh. Not even pretending the shaping only happens when 'necessary'. Now it's just full blown shaping the whole day.

I'm not sure that we ever pretended that shaping wasn't happening when it was. We always said that it was demand based prior to the current shaping method.

Except there's no difference for the users if it's just shaped all the time. 'Demand based' means nothing if it's constantly shaped anyway.

But why the change in policy? Did you realise you don't actually have enough capacity?

We have enough capacity, we decided that we might be able to offer Uncapped users a better overall internet experience, especially on priority realtime services, if we shaped more actively during peak periods. We're assessing the data we're getting back to see what changes we'd like to make going forward (if we do make changes).

I prefer the old way of shaping... At least with that, we could actually download drivers / software updates, etc as we needed them during the day.
Now if I need to download 200mb, I have to sit and wait forever for it to finish downloading.

I really hope that this shaping method is not permanent. If it does become permanent I will be forced to cancel my account at Afrihost. At present I'd get a better experience on a 2Mbs line on any other ISP during the day.

If you have to shape everyone the whole day (my shaping has never been inside the hours you stipulate, btw) then you don't have enough capacity.

And part of the problem is that you consider legitimate downloads as not being important for your users' internet experience.
