Afrihost Uncapped ADSL Feedback (Pt3)

What are the support guys telling you?

It's always that shaping is dynamic and only kicks in if demand is high, real time services should be fine, etc. I know what I'm experiencing (been on uncapped for a while so I know what it was like previously as well) and the shaping is definitely affecting 'real time' services. If it's not affected by shaping, then I guess the general speed from Afrihost is poor.

You're not the only one who's experienced this, I had the same, switched over to capped and the problems went away. It's not ideal though, I prefer the freedom of uncapped.

Orihalcon has been running tests with Afrihost over the last week or so and he said he will let us know what the results are once they've come back to him.

Realtime services should continue to be good on Uncapped. We're only shaping non-realtime services. With the shaping we've implemented temporarily between 7:30am and 10:00pm, we're generally seeing much better throughput and realtime performance, especially on Youtube.

Have you run any testing or diagnostics on your connection when the performance is poor?

Yip, I've run the diagnostics and sent the results through as well. I've tried another ISP account and 'real time services', especially streaming, worked just fine on that account so shaping is definitely affecting my real time services.

How do you guys classify streaming? Is it just youtube or does it apply to all streaming? What about streaming from an app? I use pocket a lot and trying to play a video there is even worse than youtube. Is that classified as a download?

we are shaping all Uncapped users between 7:30am and 10:00pm in the North and East (slightly later in the South) to ensure that we can deliver low-contention and consistent performance

Would have been nice if you guys notified clients that may not always be following this thread. Even the support guys don't mention this in their feedback. At least we would know to expect this and not get frustrated all the time.

Also, That's essentially shaping the whole day (well the hours ppl are awake and using the net) so your systems need to be absolutely brilliant and spot on in indentifying the different data types going through the lines so it can prioritize traffic - otherwise you are going to get lots of upset users - and from the looks of it, it's not.

(Sorry for the multiple posts - on mobile and rushing)

We are testing the shaping hours to identify the sweet spot on the network - what we're seeing so far is a much improved realtime experience across the board :)

Keep telling yourself that, oh wait you are. Must be the 20th time you have said that now.

Remember that unshaping after 10:00 is dynamic. Most users are less shaped within an hour and unshaped by midnight, but that can vary according to demand at the time.

Also remember that the South starts a little later in the morning and ends a little later in the evening becuase of the different usage patterns in that region.

Was 11:15 before shaping became less...

Yup.

Have as yet not heard anything back from them. Been told to be patient. Considering I have an alternative account it does not bug me THAT much, but I would like them to get to the bottom of this. Uncapped was not running as it should...

Once I hear anything I will post it.

I'll check with the team on how the testing is progressing for you.

Thank you Afriman! I am fairly sure that what I experienced was also being felt by other users going from the posts here lately.

It's always in our interest to troubleshoot as many queries as we can. If solving one issue helps many clients that just an extra bonus for us :)

Is it the new norm to get 100Kb with an AH capped account on a 10meg line...

Are you seeing these speeds on P2P or download services?
Have a look at your shaping profile, your realtime services shouldn't be affected :)

I don't have a shaping profile its capped isn't it suppose to be unshaped. Speeds have always been fine I was downloading on http 15mb and it was going at 100
