Afrihost Uncapped ADSL Feedback (Pt3)

Shaping is fine for the standard Uncapped accounts (they don't pay premium price, average to medium shaping is fine during office hours). Even with shaping on during daytime, the speeds shouldn't be too bad, with the After hours and weekends the "pipes" must be opened up to give some leeway.

Obviously the premium users must get full speed all the time. {getting their full Package speed at least 85% of the time, if their line is nice and clean}.

I'm guessing by premium you mean Capped and Business. Ideally we want everyone to get a consistent experience, even Uncapped users. By managing contention through shaping, we hope to do that for Uncapped users so that can have realistic expectation of throughput on realtime services at all times.

Any known issues in Durban?

17ms pings to afrihost.com - all good
but getting like 20KB/s on a most normal HTTP international downloads.

4Mbit line, Biz Uncapped Afrihost

Shouldn't be any issues in the Durban area, are all your downloads slow?

Ech upon further investigation it would appeal to be my line.

Nice pings to Afrihost.com - leave ping running.
Pick up landline, Dial 1026
"When you hear the signal it will be.."
PING TIMEOUT
*hang up line*
Pings resume.

Tried a few times.
Time to hunt reboot the router, look for a new microfilter and see if that helps but it's probably my line.. proper vintage copper here, from about 1970-something.

Would usually point to a pots filter, even a noisy line :(
Sounds like you're on the right track with your troubleshooting though - sometimes swapping the jacks around on the wall helps too, for some unknown reason :p

Keep me posted!

Is there a problem between Durban and Johannesburg. I am getting good speeds (on SpeedTest) on international and Cape Town. The speed to my server at MWeb Business, as well as Mybroadband all really slow.

I don't know of any core network issues. It may be an issue with the peering to the centre hosting that server, or perhaps just slow performance of the server in general. If speeds elsewhere are good, I would doubt that it's a throughput issue on the core network.

Very odd, could you paste up a traceroute here? I might be able to identify something here :(

Ping to your router is pretty high, so I am guessing this is over WiFi. Might be best to test over a LAN cable so we can eliminate any WiFi interference.

Looks to me like your exchange is probably congested. IF that's the case, lowering your line speed will probably not help much. Having a faster line might be better cos then you might get slightly more throughput, really depends on the demand on the exchange at the time.

running tracert exposes the problem. Its not the router or the exchange.

All goes well to a point routing overseas, and then it goes pear shaped. You get time outs.

Better today than yesterday.

For example from CPT MTN servers to ***uk-a.mtnns.net things go fine and then from ***uk-a.mtnns.net to ***uk-a.mtn.net for a wobbly
