Afrihost Uncapped ADSL Feedback (Pt3)

Problem IS on Afrihost.

Multiple users in different parts of country on all packages...everyone is complaining.

I bet they spin same PR rubbish of 'isolated' cases warra warra.

Theory is that demand is outstripping capacity completely in evenings and as a result all users are being rate limited to keep latency low.

Not cool!

Nope, I'm experiencing slow speeds on my WA Business Uncapped account. Video streaming is impossible. P2P is dead. Only web browsing is ok but slow. It's due to the fact that almost everybody in SOUTH ****ING AFRICA IS DOWNLOADING iOS8 right ****ing now. **** them and their ****ing ****ty Apple products.

I was asked to test my own uncapped account again to see if the problem still persists. It does.

That is a clearly imposed rate limit. Starts great for 5 seconds, then get's shaped, throttled, limited or whatever to 260kB/s. *sigh*

Back to the alternative account I was given till this is sorted. What I don't understand is that if the alternative account I was given is identical to the one I have - so I was told - then what possible explanation is there for this behavior? There is clearly something wrong with my account.

It does sound like there was an issue with your previous account if you're using the same kind of account (i.e. Uncapped) and getting different results. Perhaps the best thing will be to can your old account and create a new username and account for you, while we figure out what ruleset could be causing the issue :(

Remember it is IOS 8 day , so your internet will probably be slow :P

We did see some sustained high usage, especially in the South. But I think this update was thankfully not as big as previous. But I think we'll have to watch over the next few days as people get notifications to run the update, and as Apps start pushing out updates for iOS8.

We've been reporting slow throughput issues here and on our network status for the South from approximately 7pm to around 10pm. This due to a trend of high demand during that period. We're rolling out a software update to our network management systems to manage traffic more efficiently to bring demand in line in that period and we expect throughput. The software should start taking effect in the next day or so, if it has not already. We can then monitor and see if this has the desired effect (and will also improve performance on all networks, not just the South).

I don't think we've said that throughput in the South is isolated at all. I've posted a few times that we acknowledge the issue on our side.

While it does relate to capacity and demand, it's completely untrue that we are rate limiting accounts to keep latency low. The demand we're is not sufficient to affect latency, in terms of contention, but high enough that throughput is diminished intermittently in some cases. While contention can sometime have a similar experience to throttling or rate limiting, this is definitely not the case here.

I can't speak for other networks, but I think iOS8 was always going to make a splash of some kind.

I see now that the updates also dropped the U2 album on your device, so hopefully there isn't a whole lot more unexpected data usage in the update :(

So, I used my Turbo charge minutes to grab a torrent and it has made no difference at all. Still running on a 4mb line at 3.8KB. I now see that there are some problems as the Apple fanboys are busy - always something.......

Hi Afriman. My Speed gets bad from as early as 4pm. It will good to inform the support staff of the problem in the south as they are under the impression it's line faults.

Turbocharge is not working or something. Trying to download archeage and its capped at 90KB/s, i activate turbocharge no change, i switch to capped and bam up to 400KB/s. 2 hours of turbocharge wasted, looks like it doesn't work anyway.

Once again I have been shaped the whole night. You need to get your **** right AH. You are now not providing the service I pay for. Pathetic!

Had exactly the same issue, used turbocharge for absolutely no difference in speed. And then they dare charge you for it?!

Same here still shaped to 18%, i hardly download anymore so who knows i may have been shaped the entire ****ing month and not have noticed until now. My last month and i'm leaving.

It could be that due to the contention yesterday we could give you the extra throughput for your download.

Drop me a PM and I'll give you back the Turbocharge you lost :(

The team are aware of the problems in the South, but we must always troubleshoot effectively to make sure we diagnose correctly. If we simply blame the network, we might not find out that it could be a faulty line or misconfigured router. We should always try to see if there is something that can be fixed before dismissing the issue as a problem with the network.

well my uncapped account now is just dead no throughput at all.

That's pretty awful. Although a lot of clients experience slow throughput, you should still have been able to authenticate and get some service.

Can you PM me so I can check this out for you?

We definitely did unshape, though demand remained high when natural shaping kicked in, so you may not have been shaped as quickly as previously.
