Afrihost Uncapped ADSL Feedback (Pt3)

Status
Not open for further replies.
So testing today I get crap ping on a capped Afrihost account (120) and on uncapped its even worse (240+).
Meanwhile with international games I get 1500 ping.

So since Thursday my account has been useless and then you want to tell me that your shaping system is improving things for the better?

I haven't had to complain about my ISP this much since I was with Openweb.

Rather test with a different backbone.

Hi Chris ,

Oscar here from Afrihost Critical Care.
Our Social Media asked us to investigate & help speed up the pending problem you have been experiencing.

We have been experiencing problems on our network; but are doing all we can to resolve this.
We first had some issues with international speeds, then the iOS8 updates were released.
Our uncapped accounts are also dynamically heavier in shaping as network demand increases.

I'll be able to get concrete feedback tomorrow on where we stand with changes to improve our network, & update you in turn.
Once again we apologise for all inconvenience caused.

Kind Regards

Oscar

So it might be better tomorrow? It will be getting a lot better come end on the month when i switch to telkom!

I don't like the way web Africa accounts give me half data for day use and other half for night. I pay for the data so why should an isp tell me when I can use it.

Good choice, Afrihost is completely incapable of dealing with ADSL line support, and the fact they are completely indifferent to issues that they customers experience doesn't help either. I had an issue which persisted for months, still not fixed. Luckily I moved so its now some other chump's problem.

I don't think that is the case, though I take your point that we were not able to resolve your line issue. We have several thousand clients who trust is with their DSL lines and we work with Telkom to ensure that those clients get the best possible performance.

I'm sorry that this did not go as planned in your case, and I do hope that you will get this resolved with your new ISP :(

8pm not a peep from a mtn lackey ... oops i mean ... "afrihost" critical care person

MTN must have stepped hard on the necks of afrihost management to get them to buy less capacity for afrihost customers. Afrihost is now just another prisoner of one of the worst companies in south africa.

We all knew this day was coming... hellopeter seems to agree looks just like mtn's complains...

I'm sorry that you are having such a poor experience and I'm sure that our Critical Care team will be in touch and offer the best solutions they can for your query.

I just want to mention that nothing has changed yet with regard to MTN. The deal is still under review by the competitions board, so MTN have no management capacity or decision making within Afrihost at this point in time. However, when we have worked with them on these problems they generally been very generous in providing additional capacity and taking some big financial risks to try to secure more IPC for us on several occasions.

I believe that once MTN are officially on board, this will allow us to take even bigger risks, so it's definitely not going to be a case of stepping on necks at all. I guess time will tell, but that's my view from the inside.

280 ping on local Teamspeak again! Its definitely not my exchange. My friend who is on the same exchange but with a different ISP is connected to the same server and his ping is 37.
Had to stop playing wow cause my international ping was 5800 and eventually disconnected.

EDIT: Just tested. When I use the free 1GB afrihost account then my ping is down to 37, but as soon as I switch back to uncapped, it goes back to 150 - 300

Capped and Uncapped accounts work on different data pools, so contention on one pool may not necessarily affect the other, unless there is overall contention on the network.

We'll need to look into this on our side and see if we're seeing high contention on Uncapped specifically.

But remember...shaping does not effect latency. No sir not at all. /sarcasm

No matter what we experience and how much we post real world results, Arihost just sticks to the PR response script regarding this. *sigh*

Shaping does not affect latency. We've proved this in several tests before deploying the shaping system and from ongoing tests. Contention is totally different though. We would generally see some increase in latency if contention is severe.

Currently shaped to 7KBps on Usenet. Pretty useless stuff from Afrihost.

We definitely unshaped accounts last night, and the relied on demand to naturally unshape account according to overall network traffic.

From my reports, depending also on the region, we saw most users start to be unshaped just after 10pm, and the heaviest users completely unshaped around 2-3am.

If you were still shaped at that time, I'll be happy to check your account to see what could have happened there.

Afriman with all due respect. When shaping is active and my gaming experience is poor with high pings and I activate a turbocharge and my pings improve dramatically to that of a capped account - my conclusion is that the shaping effects in game latency. That is my real world result and experience. All the in house testing in the world won't change my, and my others' here, experience.

Screw you Afrihost, Thanks for nothing, Pathetic to the max, yet another bloody night of COMPLETE shaping

I'm really sorry that we've let you down and I totally understand your frustration. We are definitely unshaping over the evenings, but if you weren't unshaped or less shaped at all, please PM me so I can verify this on your account and then escalate this urgently :(

Nice, act like you care, while your actions clearly show that you could not care less.

Well yesterday I had a great day with my Afrihost home uncapped account. Pages were loading quickly, and I could youtube at 720p. First time in ages. I thought maybe the techies had finally got it right (or they left the servers alone for a change)

And today its back to the same old nonsense. Web pages take ages to load or time out, and Youtube buffers on 144p streaming.

Oh and before I get told its my line, I logged onto a capped webafrica account, and my internet is flying.

So it definitely looks like Afrihost is oversubscribed. I'm hope the sort something out, because I really don't think they could shape the uncapped accounts anymore aggressively. When google.co.za timesout sometimes, you know your ISP is in trouble!

I'm sorry you're getting such an inconsistent performance. We'e generally seeing better performance today, and I don't think we're generally seeing performance degraded to this degree at the moment.

What do traces show? Maybe if there is a node showing high latency we can report to MTN :(

Hi Afriman

I did a simple tracert on google.co.za. I had nothing downloading in the background, and I rebooted my router. These are my results:

I get similar results on some other international sites. Here is the results when I tracert afrihost.co.za:

Locally, it looks a lot better. So i might assume its an international node that is causing issues?

If there is another tracing program you want me to use, let me know.

Looks like there is still some higher demand around, seems to be spiked up every now and then.
