Afrihost Uncapped ADSL Feedback (Pt3)

I'd still honestly love to know what's driving this capacity shortage. It seems to have been a DRAMATIC, sustained demand increase. I feel like I must be missing out on something!

Someone in another thread raised that we get a lot of people, especially in the South, coming to SA for holidays starting from Oct/Nov. Might be a part of it. But we definitely seem to see this upsurge at this time of the year, I guess 20Mbps ADSL+ lines, the rate of upgrade from 2-4Mbps and 4-10Mbps. It could be a lot of things, only some of which we can really verify :(

Didn't all the series start airing recently? I remember OW blaming GOT of every Monday there were slow speeds for people.

I think some big series did start again. One I follow is Sleepy Hollow, which I have been waiting for ages to continue ;)

Well it's a new month. With the test account given to me having lapsed I switched my old uncapped back on.

Pleasantly surprised. Streaming is flawless for the first time in months! Granted I was home during the day today. Will see what it does tonight and how the downloads run after 00:00.

Whatever you tweaked seemed to have worked. My problem is resolved looks like.

That's awesome to hear :)

Afrihost, now is the time to be transparent and tell us what's happening. Really tell us. If a router broke, or a config was a mess or even if the MTN network is out of capacity and needs upgrading, please tell us. This is not the time for generic responses and pointless testing. Get the technical manager to explain to us what's really happening, we'd be better able to understand the situation and what boat we're all in. I can definitely say that IS bandwidth is working fine, but I'm crawling on Afrihost, which can mean only one thing. You're not being transparent enough and it's gonna cost you a lot of clients.

Even if you have to actually tell us what your bandwidth is for each region and what amount is currently being switched. If the capacity is being overrun just tell us. Let us know that the uncapped accounts will be limited to a certain amount. We'd appreciate that a lot more than being vague. We all know the internet in South Africa can only handle a certain speed per user internationally, just be honest.

While demand is high, it does drop down sometimes during the day.
We're seeing this across the board, and while I know it's far from ideal - we're doing our absolute best to provide the best experience to everyone.

AfriMan also posted a general update earlier today

Morning Guys

I know performance yesterday was pretty poor for many clients. We saw demand rise significantly just before midday. We made some changes to the network to try to immediately improve performance but the impact was not as significant as we had hoped. We've implemented several other changes that will take effect through today and tomorrow. Our technical director is also reviewing the current situation, and based on the data, will make a call on the way forward.

I know that many people are calling for additional capacity, and I just want to remind you guys that capacity is never an overnight solution. We'll need to do research and projections on how much and place orders with Telkom in that regard. So the best thing for now is to focus on what can be done to stabilise performance and offer a consistent experience until we finalise our plans for the longer term.

When I have more information about what is happening, I'll share that with the forums so we're all on the same page.

I really am sorry that we had such a rough day yesterday, I know it must have been fairly frustrating, and I promise that we are not ignoring the situation and are putting our minds and resources towards improving in every way possible.

The only person you should be angry at is yourself. If you are having issues, move to another ISP. When they fix their issues, move back.

I'm sorry that we haven't posted further updates. I've tried to post information here, but essentially the info is the same.

Our technical director is leading a team, working with MTN and external experts to try and improve performance immediately as well as looking at what needs to be done to secure best performance in the long term. When I have more information around what we're doing, I'll update the forum :(

So my connection is completely useless this morning. Can barely open Google.
Tried a tracert to mybroadband but I keep getting request timed out on all hops.
Can't load MyBB speedtest either. Can't connect Raptr or Teamviewer.

EDIT: Seems like I can at least connect again. Will have to check tonight to see how latency looks like.

ATTENTION: NOOBS

Please don't be deceived by the fact that Afrihost recently won the MyBB's Best ISP 2014 award. Before ordering their ****ty uncapped products, come here and observe these poor uncapped users complaining all day about terrible speeds. Schadenfreude. Google it. It's good for your mental health.

Have a happy day.

Good to see you can connect again. I'll have to check for you if it happens again, I won't be able to see much while it's working again :(

Were there big issues last night? 4mbps uncapped and latency was HORRIBLE last night after around 19:00...

Latency looked pretty normal last night, did you manage to grab any test results that I can check?

i also had the same issue last night... carried through to this morning but after i rebooted my router.

Seemed to be running a bit smoother.
