i also had the same issue last night... carried through to this morning but after i rebooted my router.

Seemed to be running a bit smoother.

Very odd, sorry about that :(
If you notice this again tonight please run some tests so we can see what's going wrong.

What's the shaping policy on Apple app store and google play?
With those stores I get full speed on app downloads but for windows app store its slow.

AFAIK all the app stores should fall under HTTP downloads. I could be wrong though.
I'll get confirmation from our team for you :)

Couple of months ago when Afrihost was good, downloads from microsoft weren't working at all.
Same thing again only starting from today, today buffering and other downloads are great but when I ping microsoft.com I get request timed out.
So all those increase in usage we seen the past few months can be attributed to Microsoft update? And you guys restored back-up of shaping profile that you used back then?

Timeouts may be due to how traffic is handled on some servers. Could you paste the traceroute here please?

What happened to the customer service from afrihost?

I'm a little confused and annoyed right now. I moved house last week and due to a telkom stuff up I was without an adsl line for 10 days. They eventually install the line on Monday and when I get onto my user cp and I see that after 10 solid days of zero activity I am still shaped? When I try and phone to get the caller id changed so I can connect from my new line I get put on hold for 15 minuets. I try call back later... Again on hold for 15 minuets... Try again the next day ... Again 15 minutes. So I give up and email.

I get the caller id changed straight off but when I ask about the shaping it's as if everyone gets dumb. I ask why I'm still shaped after zero activity on the account for now more than 10 days. I get told that I need to turn my router off for half an hour to reset the shaping. I ask how turning off my router that isn't even connected to this account will somehow affect the shaping. I also ask how the rules are applied and what the cryptic little "18.8 download bla bla" message actually means. I get a reply ( which is getting dumber and dumber) stating that turning off my router will reset my ip and that somehow resetting the ip on my capped account will somehow magically change the shaping on my uncapped one. I also get the whole copy pasta of the shaping policy.
Great.
Except that the first answer is so dumb I should actually just ignore it and the second answer is a perfect example of dodging the question. I reply anyway asking very specifically that if a simple ip change was going to change the shaping then surely 10 days of being disconnect should have somehow reset the ip way more than a magical half hour with my router off. I also specifically ask them to explain what their cryptic messages are. I even copied and pasted the part in question into the email. I have not had a reply all day.
I now regret voting for afrihost as the best isp for the last 3 years.

So, this is my last stop before I cancel my account and get the same thing for R100 cheaper from webafrica, cybersmart or even axxess. Can someone explain to me how the policy is applied and what the stupid little messages mean?

Afrishost customer service is non existent

I am so close to cancelling my account with them, they are not the same company they were 2 years ago where you got what you paid for! NOw they are big and losing a few clients means nothing to them.

Really STINKS!

I'm sorry that you had this poor experience. I think while the answers may have probably been factually correct, at the end of the day it's our job to explain the situation in a way that empowers you and sets your mind at ease.

Shaping at the moment is applied based on demand. During the day we shape all users from about 7:30am to 10pm, and thereafter we dynamically shape according the demand on the network. We don't shape based on a threshold or usage total, so whether you have not used your account for some time or not, shaping could still be applied after peak, and will definitely be applied during the peak day period.

I am really sorry you feel this way. We have grown substantially and we're probably a lot more people than we were. I guess the truth is that we have to work harder to make sure that each and every person within the company, from cleaner to managers, always sticks to the values and service standard that we've set as a company. And that is something that is a priority within the company, but perhaps hasn't had the focus it should have where we've been more focussed on making sure we have enough people. I can promise that this is something we're taking very seriously and resources are being allocated specifically towards making sure we don't lose our awesome company and service culture.

I finally got a reply, I'm not sure if you had anything to do with that but thank you.

The shaping has been applied to my account solidly since I reconnected to it yesterday. :/

Can we get an update on the increased IPC?? Been like this since the 30 September with no update. This has pretty much been going on since the 9th September when you guys tried to blame iOS 8 release for the poor speeds.

I can barely stream a YouTube video on a 10Mbps line without it buffering every 10 seconds!

11:18 PM and still fully shaped. Switched to my capped (afrihost) account and I get full speed. :/

Honestly why am I paying for a 4mg uncapped line if I'm only going to get 2mg?

Edit: seems the speed is bouncing arround a bit it's been up a bit now. so it may not be shaping, tho my user cp still says I am shaped.

Reading a customer complaint and ignoring it doesn't make it go away. I'm on 10Mbps capped so shaping can't be the issue.
