That is great to see, Friday's are generally a bit quieter, so shaping may be less intensive, but I certainly hope you continue to see this performance.

The only testing now will be to see if there is a local issue that could be causing problems on the modem, line or Exchange., as per normal. :)
 
Well I had an excellent day with my uncapped account yesterday. Barely any shaping, and latencies were good.

Unfortunately, it seemed to be a once off deal. I logged in thie morning at 6am, and I find out that I'm on the dreaded 18.8% Download/ 6.25% P2P shaping again. On a Saturday morning. Really?

Its sad to see that Afrihost has been hyping the additional IPC as the light at the end of the tunnel, yet the still throttle and shape home uncapped users for 19 to 20 hours a day.

As I've said before in the past, Afrihost definitely see home uncapped users as pests. We aren't a priority at all. I guess since we're too cheap/can't afford to get a business account, we aren't worth the time and effort to get a great internet experience.
 
I have left Afrihost last month and joined Crystalweb. I had a 100gb capped acc and a 20gb capped acc since I dont believe Afrihost uncapped will ever be a good product ever again. Definitely not if you want to download.

I have a 4mb line and uncapped with Crystalweb and we stream to at least 4 devices at the same time (hulu and Netflix) and I normally browse as well while all this is going on. I have done about 220gb for the month with virtually no hiccups.

Afrihost will never see me as a Customer again.
 
Sooooo. Supposedly no shaping is being applied. Once again im streaming YouTube at 144p. On a 4Mb line.

Hmm - seems I was premature thinking things were better - I see we are back to 25% Download/ 12.5% P2P.

So all the capacity is sitting there in case somebody wants to stream something? Or are there really people already streaming rubbish from youtube on a Monday morning?

You Can't even stream. I had them reset my line, it was all good from 5am till about 8am before i left for the office. Back down to 144p on a 4Mb line. Something is definitely wrong on my line.

Your tracert takes you off to the UK. I am in cape town and www.youtube.com resolves to
66.8.14.16 which is in South Africa.

Check your DNS settings.

I also found a setting in Chrome that was causing slow youtube, so try using firefox and see if performance is better.

We value all of our clients equally, however, shaping of P2P services is part of our Uncapped accounts, you should see improvements in your shaping as the week progresses, shaping is generally at its highest on Mondays and towards the end of the month.

Our system does not keep aside any bandwidth just for streaming, the system will continuously analyze how much bandwidth is being consumed by all users, then if demands starts to climb, shaping is applied to P2P services on Uncapped accounts to ensure that real-time services receive the best possible speeds, this ensures that our Capped, Uncapped and Business Uncapped users have the best possible experience.

Capped and Business accounts running at full tilt. Bandwidth is prioritised for them.

Wait wait wait...did you just confirm that on Capped and Business accounts p2p will be shaped when demand increases? This when these products are marketed as unshaped for exactly the reason to avoid this?

Your Streaming should definitely not be at that speed, how have your other service's speed been? You mention your line, could you send me a PM with your ADSL line number so that I can look into this.

Yes... I edited my post to make my statement clearer.

P2P will not be shaped on Capped and Business Uncapped accounts, unless the Business Prioritisation has been specifically enabled on the Business Uncapped accounts.

No...I think you had it right the first time as that would fall perfectly in line with the experience on p2p while your capacity was strained. Finally let the truth slip.
