Afrihost Uncapped ADSL Feedback (Pt3)

No...I think you had it right the first time as that would fall perfectly in line with the experience on p2p while your capacity was strained. Finally let the truth slip.

That was a case of multiple users contending for the same limited bandwidth, the experience now that the IPC upgrades are in place will be significantly improved across all services.

Completely agree with that. My own uncapped experience has been greatly improved upon since Friday.

Our system does not keep aside any bandwidth just for streaming, the system will continuously analyze how much bandwidth is being consumed by all users, then if demands starts to climb, shaping is applied to P2P services on Uncapped accounts to ensure that real-time services receive the best possible speeds, this ensures that our Capped, Uncapped and Business Uncapped users have the best possible experience.

I don't understand - you have applied maximum shaping from 8am to 10pm every day - surely this capacity is just sitting there, idling, waiting for someone to use it?

We try to use as much of the bandwidth on our system as possible at all times, however, when the demand starts to outstrip the available capacity, our system then starts to apply shaping to P2P services on Uncapped accounts to ensure the prioritised services receive the best possible speed. This means that the amount of bandwidth sitting waiting to be used to kept to an absolute minimum, and then this does occur, the shaping is relaxed on the Uncapped accounts.

Internet was horrible yesterday from 9am to 9am this morning but luckily everything seems fine now, just one question?

Turbocharge doesn't seem to do anything to me, the page says no shaping but I don't see any effect on the line at all? Placebo effect?

Turbocharge definitely does have an affect, did you manage to grab any tests when you saw the slow speeds?

The slow speeds wasn't really slow download speeds but unreliable high pings that were fluctuating heavily. So pages was loading slowly even thou bandwidth wasn't really a problem - ping times to 8.8.8.8 went as high as 5000ms - 8000ms at times with little traffic on the line(0.5-1mb's).

About the turbocharge - I have tried it a few times when i have an important download but the speed before and in turbocharge has always been the same. I'm on a 4mb line so the 18.8% shaping when activated gives me a 96KB's download speed but this stays the same in turbocharge when I activate it.

Latency this high could indicate an issue on the line/ exchange.
If you see if spike up again could you paste some traceroutes that I can check?

Ya well, everything seems to be peachy right now. But I'm still concerned about the P2P shaping. How come you're shaping even capped accounts? I mean this was the one and only reason why I switched from uncapped to 100+100 capped, in order to surf, play and download on 100% line speed ALL THE TIME!!! Where's your promised Internet Bliss?

No shaping is done on Business/ Capped.
Please PM me some test info that I can look into.

AfriGuy I think you oaks need to make a PSA that explains that there are bandwidth pools per interface and that even though there is no shaping applied on capped and business accounts, if the demand on those services outstrip the supply in those pools the service will degrade. As that is exactly what happened the last 6 weeks and people confuse their slow speeds with shaping.

Youtube releases 60 FPS, Afrihost can't seem to run 720p60 at fullspeed. It runs 480 and old 720p30 at the full 440KB/s. Update your shaper profiles?

EDIT: Oh wait, no. Seems even standard 720p30 is being affected. Lovely.

Hmmm?

Send me a few video links that you're having problems with if you want. I've not had problems yet playing the new content at full speed - though I can clearly see that the new 60fps videos needs more bandwidth. 720p60fps is still - luckily - doable on a 4mb :)

Maybe those videos weren't cached locally yet? I've seen that AFrihost's performance on non cached youtube is pretty abysmal in the evening when the network is stressed... :(

Here from 23:00 it starts running great again. My experience anyway.

What line speed do you have?
Shouldn't be issues here.

Exactly this. Youtube vids will run fine and then randomly drop speed and stay low. But always 720+. 480 will stick to fullspeed constantly.

This was the clip. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X2BLaj4WXLQ Playing it now, it runs flawlessly. At the time of my post, for an hour prior to my post this clip would simply run poorly 720p60, maybe they were having bandwidth issues?

Off-topic a bit. I'm surprised at 60fps, 60fps clips are about 10-20% bigger file. So not that much different. I use this site to have a look at the clip size. http://www.clipconverter.cc/

Around an hour leading up to my complaint post, nearly all clips at 720 ran horribly. Now they are running fine. Could it have been peak bandwidth being hit in the EastIPC or something?
