How does this work .......

Link just failed a few minutes ago: Pre that happening was in game with 280 ping (much happy), now it's 350+ after the link dropped. What gives?

P.S - my line didn't drop in any way, just the dial up to AH.

Sounds like the authentication dropped for some reason, I'd like to check the latency though - can you paste a traceroute here when you see the high results again please?

Hey Guys

We're running an awesome competition next week on our Answers site!

We'll be giving away prizes everyday for the best questions and answers and then a grand prize on Friday for the best overall question or answer.

Grand prize is a Mobile Wifi Device and Powerbank (Huawei E5730) worth R1,099! That's what we sell the device for, it's probably selling for a lot more in retail stores. But it supports up 10 devices over WiFi, has up to 16 hours of battery life and also supports 3G speeds up to 43.2Mbps.

Hope you guys will asking and answering away next week. Represent MyBB and all of that!

Awesome :)

PS I've added the link to my signature if you need to find it quickly :)

Is there a known DNS issue with Afrihost at the moment?
I keep getting intermittent DNS lookup failures.

eg: The server at maps.google.co.za can't be found, because the DNS lookup failed. ...

Can't see any issues from our end.
If you switch over to Googles DNS servers do you see the same issue?

Dear Afrihost,

I would like to thanks you guys for the service you have provided in January.
I was expecting that the shaping, that was in place before X-Mas would be back in place, but it did not.

I only saw shaping on my account once during Jan. Otherwise full speed on streaming and downloads.

Soo great experience overall. Thanks and keep up the good work.

I've been out of the loop for a while with Afrihost's Home uncapped product after leaving last year when the quality in the South went well ... South. I believe that things have improved considerably and am thinking about trying out the service again. The majority of my usage is Netflix thanks to my 5 year old and other streaming sites like Hulu, BBC iPlayer, Vevo etc. Daytime/peak usage is between 100-150gb pm and I queue all my downloads between 12-6am approx 150gb pm. How does the shaping work nowadays on say a 10mb package and will this package meet my needs?

No problems on our 4mbps uncapped account, Netflix streams 720p, Chromecast works without a hitch with iPlayer, Hulu and the other streaming providers.

Thanks so much for the compliment. It's really the design of the system that does all the work, but we do have a great team of guys making sure it runs smoothly and gives clients as much bandwidth back as possible.

Enjoy those (legal) downloads ;)

Shaping is always determined by demand. We've also tightened up our shaping so that the heaviest users are shaped a lot more efficiently and protocols that were slipping through the cracks have been shaped as well.

We really do think that our network is running at it's absolute best right now, and i would definitely give us a try.

Drop me a PM for a discount on your first month so you can give us a try :)

How's the 6mbps Uncapped Business line? My tuition classes need a new internet ISP and I was thinking Afrihost.

Wicked :) It's just one account. It's for school purposes. It's one of those Unisa external tuition class, so essentially it's like a small business. Max about 30 people in 2 classes at a time

An Uncapped or Business Uncapped should work for this, it'll probably be down to how many people will use the connection at once and how resource intensive the tasks are. 30 people streaming at once may not work so well.

To anyone who is thinking of signing up for an Afrihost Plus+ Trial, be careful. I signed up on 27 November, and attempted to cancel before 25 December. I received an error which stated I should contact Afrihost. The agent I spoke to assured me that the cancellation had gone through.

Yesterday, I receive an invoice with an additional R60 for Simfy. When I contacted Afrihost again, the agent asked whether I'd seen the message about Simfy (something about a check box) when I cancelled Afrihost Plus+. Um... no, I just got an error message when I tried to cancel, no check box or anything.

Anyway, they did reverse the R60, so no complaints there, but I just thought I'd warn everyone, that you need to make sure that both Afrihost Plus+ and Simfy are cancelled when your trial expires to avoid being billed.

Sorry about this, it's definitely not a standard process here :( I think the error caused some issues with the cancellation.

No big deal, they rectified it very quickly after calling. Just thought people should know that this could happen.

I don't think it's a regular occurrence, and with any investigation we work on fixing the problem :) We're not in the game of intentionally trying to bait someone into secret billing cycles.

Until yesterday, I didn't know that you offered Simfy as a separate service, I thought it was only bundled with Afrihost Plus+. I don't see it listed as a separate option on your site though. Was it perhaps an error?

Simfy is only bundled with Plus+.
You only got this due to a glitch on our end, which I can now confirm - is resolved.
