Afrihost Uncapped ADSL Feedback (Pt3)

You're confusing two events.

Your support guy said that there was a problem and all services were being 'managed'. When I pressed him, he admitted this was Afrihost's new term for shaping. Even the unshaped accounts were affected.

Regarding the speed problem, the support team responded by saying that 0.5 is "average" for a 1Meg line. I also find you can't argue with them. Do you stand by your support that 0.5 is average, because I can tell you I have been getting .9 roughly since the lines went to 1Meg?

Does anyone audit what the support people do and how long they take to answer?

Sorry, I thought that you were referring to something that was said here on the forums.

Sounds like you did chat to someone who was a little confused about how the system works, because we manage (as in shape or throttle) Business accounts in any way. We shape Uncapped accounts to ensure that Capped and Business are always able to perform at peak.

It's hard to say how an average line should perform, it depends on your line's ability (i.e. distance from the exchange and the quality and state of the copper cabling from your premises to the DP and the exchange). There are certainly many clients who do get around 0.5 to 0.6Mbps on 1Mbps lines. I see Telkom did state that some lines were not upgrades (I think the process closed yesterday) and that some would be only be upgraded later in the year.

Hi @Afriman,

when are we going to see any of the new pricing as promised?

I don't have an ETA just yet. I imagine it would be in the new month, as we're already generating billing for March. Our directors are currently in negotiations with MTN to ensure the very best deals we can squeeze out of them for you :)

Hi All,

I'm currently connected to the Welgemoed exchange in Cape Town and have been having sporadic exchange congestion issues, as well as only being able to sync at 6mb/s.

Is it possible to request that Telkom move my line to the Kenridge exchange (seems to be considerably closer to me)?

Moving lines to different exchanges is extremely difficult and generally only happens under very special circumstances (and rarely at that). Telkom's view is pretty much that moving people around does't relieve the issues on their side, so they schedule exchanges for upgrade rather.

Are you sure these are not line issues, cos congestion should not affect your line sync (In theory)

@ Afriman

Cancelled my account with other ISP just waiting out my month cancellation :( . Looking forward to joining AH. Quick question will your prices be reduced on all your packages as you 2 mb business package is looking mighty tempting :)

Yes, we should see some price revisions and I predict that they will be awesome. That's all I can really say for now :)

Ok so after testing over the past 3 days.

DayZ is unplayable on Afrihost uncapped on South african server. Playable on international with 300+ ping, no issues at all.

To play DayZ on local server, one must buy a capped account from Afrihost. works like a charm.

so end of the day i get told MTN dont see an issue and cant resolve it.

Its clear to me that the uncapped product is shaped for that traffic and capped account is not. not rocket science

Did you get my last PM on this? MTN have tested the routing on their side and they don't believe this is a routing issue. We'll need to some other troubleshooting tests to get to the bottom of this :(

My 4Mbps line was slugish all day. I see Businesses account guys also complaining. Seems like the ball is being dropped here.
I already cancelled one of my hosting accounts this week.

Played GT6 tonight on the PS3 and my mic was useless. The guys could not hear a word I was saying, as I was breaking up.

Couple that with almost permanent shaping since Friday and my patience is running thin.

I'm going through the Business thread and I do see a few posts, but I would doubt very much if the entire product line is showing these symptoms. We're seeing excellent throughput on our tests, and although there is shaping on the South and East on Uncapped, Business accounts should be unaffected :(

Can you tell us what your overall throughput looks like on your line?

I doubt it, since it's already 1 day until March and people have to be notified. AH is still looking expensive with their old speed offerings and high price.

But the quality of the connection you get is still the best around.

Value for money if you ask me.

Well, have a look at the Capped thread and you will see the same complaints, but I agree it might be isolated and for different reasons.
I can't run the test. Avira detects it as a virus.

I will try to run it from one of my other pc's that don't use Avira, but I'm still uploading a file to dropbox that I started yesterday morning at about 09:00 and it still shows 3 hours left.

That is part of my frustration.

Yeah, seeing those as well. Pretty strange, network monitoring is showing awesome throughput and latency :(

Hi there,

I'm having a bit of an issue with my uncapped 10mbps ADSL account.
I've been severely shaped for the past 5 days and my download speed don't exceed the 300kbps mark.

Is this something I should be worried about ?

Are you talking about torrents downloads or your download speeds on speedtest?

Can you post your Network Test App results?

Hi Afriman

My housemate & I are looking at purchasing a 2meg line through you guys.
As far as I am aware, there is no physical phoneline currently connected to the townhouse - Are you guys able to assist in commissioning Telkom to install a line for us?

2nd question is this - We are in Laser Park in Roodepoort - How is the connectivity there? Telkom's availability map doesn't work....

Thanks in advance!

@ Afriman thanks for the help with my mailbox. woohoooo
Sorry about the late replies. really appreciate the help :)

Welcome to MyBB :)

I'm afraid you'll have to get Telkom install the voice portion of the line, we can only request that a DSL line be added once this is completed.
Can't be sure of the exact availability on the DSLAM. Even when areas show 10Mbps enabled their Distribution Point only allows for 4Mbps. Drop me a PM with your full physical address and I'll try and do some digging for you.

Just signed up today for a 6mb business DSL package and am having major nntp issues. This morning was running fine but now using news.afrihost.co.za or my xennews account I'm getting 0 kb/s. Any ideas? Have logged a support call.
