I got to agree with you... i signed up for the 4mb uncapped... not really impressed... this is what i found out so far

1. Browsing speed is faster... nice, but speed test shows for a 4mb line i only get 3.3mb speed
2. Streaming quality is really not that great... slightly less than dvd quality and hulu constantly buffers

things to try...

1. P2P download.. will put one on tonight and check the speed
2. Streaming and all other realtime services during the day...(i only use this option sometimes when i'm home in the day)

I have spoken to Afrihosts reps a few times to confirm the shaping on streaming, they said no shaping on streaming... so far, the quality from netflix, hulu and youtube begs to differ...

i'll give it a few more days, if its still the same, i'll cancel my sub with them and keep going with my current ISP... my streaming and stuff with them on an uncapped 2mb is great... great quality, fast loading and P2P in the evenings fly and doesnt affect my stream quality much...

Who is your current ISP?

Who are you with currently. If things do not change. I am changing to another isp aswell

That's a shame :/ Pity everything isn't going to well at the moment :(

IT'S A FLIPPING CRYING SHAME!

AH are by far the best ISP regarding their setup (clientzone, sms notification, user tools etc), it's just their crappy bandwidth that lets them down - BIGTIME - pros and cons aside, IS know how to do bandwidth, MTN are still schoolboys (IMO).

afrihost why must you shape me vrek!
5kb/s on a 2mb line is not right man, been a happy chappie for so long and now this?

Yeah, no matter what anyone says, I still believe I got the best ADSL experience when AH was still on IS. I know they had problems towards the end, but honestly, even then it wasn't as bad as this. But back then everything seemed much more stable, especially when it came to latency and streaming. I've found that since switching to MTN, streaming from Revision3 has become unbearable. On IS I would stream 720p streams on my 4MB line with very little buffering, but on MTN I struggle to stream a 480p stream with constant buffering. Not to mention the crazy lag spikes that occasionally happen, where I see 1000ms+ pings within the MTN network (< 100ms to the MTN network, and then I just see it suddenly rise while bouncing around a whole bunch of MTN IPs).

Almost every day now I open up the PluGG web page and consider switching over. But as you say, the Clientzone tools are very nice, which right now are probably the only thing keeping me with AH. Maybe this weekend I'll get prepaid data from them though and give it a spin. At the very least, it will be an exciting thrill to see a download go over 20KB/s for a change...

Those thinking of swapping to a business account beware. They are throttling speeds:

Hi there AfriGuy

Could you please give us the steps needed (for any of us uncapped) who want to move to the capped special coming up. I am bundled at the moment and do I have to unbundle in the old clientzone to take advantage of the capped specials? If we do have to unbundle then what is the point of having the line with Afrihost? I thought it was so we could have a saving on it and we are more inclined to stay with your products. So please could you let us uncapped bundle people know the steps please and whether we have to unbundle. :)

I moved over to Plugg when AH made the MTN move, and was happy the whole time I was there (4mb uncapped ave 300GB/mnth). There is just one gripe I have with IS is their star system penalising you if you download over the weekend, or anytime actually if it's not in the 23:00-6:00 window...

This is the exact reason why I'm getting a WebAfrica Business account at the end of the month.

This is becoming a common question, which, without being facetious, seems to be unanswerable from AH.

Please .... Please, asking while on hands and knees, can you post a step for step instruction on HOW to do this ^^

Thank you kindly.

AfriMan I wish you were back - I sent a PM to one of the reps on Monday and still no answer and questions on the thread going unanswered. I have tried the call-centre twice to help me but let us rather not go into those conversations - I knew more than them. Are they trained or educated about networking and ISP's or do they read off a script? Actually let us not worry about that, they are trying to earn a living like everyone else - and to judge them is unfair - but please answer about the unbundling side or things to get the capped special. This radio silence is a killer. Also while we are being shaped to 18% and 6% could you guys please stop taking on more clients and customers? I know on your website it says everything is running like fantastically but I put it to you that when you receive only 6% of the amount owned for the month from customers, you will not be impressed.

Hi

I've just run through your PM and replied, sorry this took so long. My inbox has exploded this week :(

Changes to any accounts can be done via the ClientZone, any changes (unless it's an upgrade) will take affect on the 1st April. If there are any errors/ issues while trying to change the account to Capped you need to unbundle the package, make the changes and re-bundle.
