Afrihost Uncapped ADSL Feedback (Pt3)

ISPs tend to drop their prices or upgrade speeds after Telkom price reductions.

That should never be expected. That was my point. Line and data are separate things. You get charged for them separately.

People that think your should get a discount on data when Telkom drops line prices usually don't know much about adsl.

It should be expected, it's just that Telkom isn't making it possible. What they should've done was drop IPC cost by 50% if they're going to increase line speeds by 100%, thereby enabling ISP's to double their account speeds as well. Since they haven't, there isnt much the ISP's can do.

Should it be expected though? Absolutely. Just not with Telkom running the show.

Please could I ask, on behalf of all of us who stayed with MWEB, that you all please stay with AH... Thanks :)

Haha. I was wondering if things at MWEB would get better when lots of people left due to the throttling. I definitely won't be staying with Afrihost if the shaping stays as it is now. Fortunately it's not to say that those who leave will move back to MWEB again. With them, I didn't like having to watch my data usage like I was on capped. And when they throttled, they throttled hard. Browsing was extremely slow too, not just downloads. I'm sure lots of people moved to them back when they started offering uncapped (which is when I signed up) and when they dropped pricing and so on. Perhaps they took on too many people for the amount of capacity they had and that's why they began throttling people. It'd certainly make sense.

It's a shame that with so many ISPs, the ADSL population can't be evenly spread out and everyone has good network experiences. The companies keep trying to win over competitors' clients, and that ends up being to their existing customers' detriment. Also to their own, since I don't believe, taking my own experiences into account, that the people who moved to the seemingly better ISP and then felt that they were screwed over and given false promises will be very willing to move back again in the future.

It'd be great to see actual numbers for the amount of people who left MWEB when the throttling started, and who left Afrihost recently when the shaping went to s**t.

The internet's awash with complaints about every ISP I've considered, so there really doesn't seem to be a good place to go at this point unfortunately.

So you think that license discs should get cheaper when the petrol price drops?

No, you haven't read my post. I'm saying that Telkom should ENABLE the ISP's to be able to drop their prices too. They're not, so in that sense I'm agreeing with you that it's not possible for ISP's to do so.

When I say that we should expect it I mean just that - expect it. As in, as consumers we should expect Telkom to make uniform decisions and enable other players in the market to offer better services to their end-users. Since it's Telkom though, it probably won't happen. Doesn't mean we shouldn't still expect it from them.

That's exactly the problem. No ISP really stands out at the moment.

But it doesn't make sense. The ISP's data, and the Telkom line are two separate things. There's no reason to think they a price in one should affect the other.

Unless you're saying it should work the other way around too. That if an ISP dropped or increased data pricing, the Telkom line should also change up or down?

No, no. I'm saying that when Telkom upgrades the line speeds, they should at the same time reduce IPC costs, thereby enabling ISP's to get more capacity so that they can order faster accounts to go with the faster lines.

Maybe. Doesn't mean it should be expected though.

It really is sad to see how many people jump from ISP to ISP, without even considering where they are going. Personally. Afrihost has been the best decision I have made with regards to ADSL. And believe me, I have gone though my fair share of accounts.

The thing I love about Afrihost, is their constant desire to please me, the client. It's just their transparently which really helps me build trust with the company. You say they are not being transparent by not releasing their business stats, however if you were to ask telkom the same thing - they would give you the same answer.

Yes. Afrihost has severe shaping issues.
Yes. Their method of improving it is taking its sweet time.
Yes. The extra capacity is taking FOREVER.
Yes. I too get annoyed with the shaping

And Finally:
Yes. I can count on my downloads being finished and sorted into plex by the time I wake up in the morning. I schedule my downloads between 9PM and 7am, for this exact reason. There is no reason why I, personally, need the content during the course of the day? I have set up an automated system for this reason, which downloads series as soon as it's released.

I can also count on the fact that when I need it - browsing, streaming and gaming is completely unshaped. (I don't use netflix, so I can't really comment). Believe me when I say, this is not true on all ISPs! I have used my fair share, and when I have been shaped - I could hardly even load google!

So no, if you are someone who needs downloads right there and then, this account probably isn't for you at the moment. However, if you are someone who can wait for the morning - I believe this account is perfect for you.

You are one of the few that CAN get your downloads in that time slot. My line has been shaped from the first hour of the month at 12.5% and 6.5% after only 3GB of downloading. It has been like that 24hrs a day since then. I should be able to get at least 450GB in a month off a 10MB Uncapped account. AH's disregard for existing clients in their time of "crisis", free giveaways, and uptake of new clients is just criminal.

That sounds pure fanboi and I'm not attacking you.
I also, schedule between 00:00 - 06:00 and Plex does its thing. However, I do need to download Http downloads during the day.

AH does not say, hey you can't download for 20 hours a day. They say "Pure Internet Joy"

In the meantime though, they expect me to pay additionally for Turbocharge minutes on an already more expensive account, for something I thought adsl was all about, namely the ability to download a file.

So although your post was very passionate, it is a fail for me and AH is a fail at the moment.

They gave free data away like nobodies business.
Why did they not boost my Turbo minutes to 3000 minutes?

You can't say this account is not for me. I'm paying them for uncapped Pure internet joy and I'm not getting a lot of joy atm.

+1000
I am in IT, and need to download drivers, updates, etc. in the day.... but I can't.
The correct way to shape, is on certain protocols... not ALL of them.

Not fanboi :P Promise :D

Anyway - I see the issue with HTTP downloads. It really is a pain! I don't mind what you think about my post, really, because it was just my honest opinion. Cause, to be perfectly honest, Afrihost is having its issues right now :(

I also find the need for on demand downloads, but then i fall into the trap of the shaping. It IS a pain, and I know that!

:(

And it's been turbocharged for over 20 minutes already when I took that screeny...

I agree with you here about the over-the-top shaping! It really isnt great.

Thats a bit weird! Im trying the file now and ive got full speed on that file?

Yep.. kinda frustrating. I should have also mentioned that I'm running a 1Mb uncapped account, KZN, and was shaped to 25% until I turbocharged.

Traceroute's look a-ok, line sync is at 1792 down, 448 up (bad weather, noisy lines, and Telkom closing fault reports without fixing the issue...), and I'm downloading from the NL servers, so everything seems good-to-go connection-wise. It's just that pesky shaping :p

May the elder's of the internet bless Afrihost with more capacity ;)

Sometimes it takes up to 10 minutes for the full speed to come through for me, but almost seem if the system compensate for this, ie
If I start 10:00 with a download, the full speed might only kick in at 10:05. My TurboCharge also only seem to stop at 10:05 and not 10:00, if I selected an hour.

Not saying it actually does work this way, just seemed to follow the trend a couple of times I actually checked.
