Afrihost Uncapped ADSL Feedback (Pt3)

The shaping stats should feed directly from our shaping systems, so there should be no delay, unless we're talking about milliseconds. These also feed directly into our internal support systems, so we definitely try to ensure no delays.

Could it be an issue with the download itself?

That's simply not possible. There HAS to be some sort of delay, as right now it's stating 6.25% P2P but I'm getting 100kBps from P2P on a 4meg line, which would make it something like 25% rather.

The question is during times where people who pay for the service are experiencing very poor network quality, should free bandwidth accounts be allocated in to anything? I'm leaning towards an answer of no. I'm sure those using the free accounts would disagree, but they won't do much good at generating profits for Afrihost if all the irritated paying customers leave because of the shaping.

We believe we're able to provide the best possible overall experience during this time. Re-looking the free 1GB accounts, double data and other products that have been brought up here won't make a difference to ease the shaping - unfortunately the already ordered capacity can change that :(

That is a load of b*****ks. If you took all the capacity you have given away for free and split it between all the unshaped accounts (who have already paid for that capacity but are not being allowed to use it) then at least some of the shaping would be eased.

This simply isn't the case here, and I don't think it's fair to make a statement like this without extensive knowledge of our IPC.

Somebody that has a 100GB capped account suddenly gets given another 100GB's to use before the end of the month, what do you think they will do?

I know what I would, let that copper glow (depleting IPC even more).

Again, this was factored in and we saw the heavier shaping before this.
Remember that this capacity was ordered last year, with additional capacity being requested while we've been waiting for the capacity to be delivered by Telkom.

So, what you're saying is that Telkom is taking longer than anticipated to do the IPC upgrade so you just had to release the double your capped offer just because if was on the calendar to-do list in the office?

That's putting the cart before the horse.

You should have waited.

No, we don't run a business like this. And again, I don't think it's fair to throw around speculation unless you have facts and information to back this up.
It was discussed and agreed after many discussion that we'd go ahead with this - it has very little to no affect on the shaping queries being brought up.

That's interesting. Please explain why it has little to no affect on the shaping queries being brought up?

Truth in advertising

Afrihost's own statistics on their website is now beginning to show the impact of their throttling policy. Based on the graphs below, the 40 mb shaped, 20 mb shaped and 10 mb shaped products provide no advantage above the 4 mb shaped product anymore. The red line indicates the 750gb level on each graph for scale. In about a week's time, even the Kings on these graphs should be pulled down to the same level.

Because as we've mentioned before, we've seen a delay in having the capacity delivered.
It has been calculated that with or without the double data (or any other product or product change) the shaping situation we're seeing now will be no different.

Afrihost promises the 1Gb capped account for free forever. Yet if you cancel your account, this free service also goes up in a puff of smoke. I'm starting to see a pattern of fake promises, claims of no shaping when there is etc....

The 1GB account remains active. It has a separate Username and password which wouldn't be the one you are cancelling

I think what a number of people here, including myself, are confused about is how taking some people (free users) off the network could possibly not give those left on it (paid users) a better experience.

I understand the fact that the pending capacity upgrades will help, and that they were delayed, but surely having fewer people using a fixed amount of capacity will mean each person has access to more of it, and therefore experiences less shaping. That seems logical to me.

You win.

I give up.

This shouldn't be the case, unless you specifically cancel the 1GB account it should stay.

I fully understand where you're coming from, I really do. And I think if I was in your guys shoes I'd feel the exact same way - maybe I'm explaining things in a bad way... not sure.
What I can say though, is I have a lot of faith in Gian and the team - we know what we're doing and while things may not be perfect (this shaping as an example) we always look forward to coming out the other end stronger and learning a whole bunch. I really wish I had a switch to turn the capacity on - I would have done so ages ago. I'm afraid we'll need to wait it out until Telkom have delivered this to us.

I'm still pushing for dates or a timeline.
