Afrihost Uncapped ADSL Feedback (Pt3)

I very much doubt they are.
The view is already that it is difficult to control these streaming services.
What has change that will prompt them to put resources into this?

It's very difficult for us to intervene in another company's offering. Essentially, Netflix has decided not to resolve SA DNS and that why you've got to use external DNS. If we officially offered a solution to bypass their restrictions, effectively bypassing their DRM, it would not be a good thing. We totally have no issues with people using external DNS services that are setup to help people access these services.

I really do hope, that like iTunes eventually did, these streaming services eventually recognise the SA market and start allowing our users access without these complex workarounds :(

Anyone else experiencing problems with the shaping report in ClientZone?

It seems to be updating rather late. Currently no shaping applied according to the report yet I know I am since all downloads max out at 50kBps. :/

The shaping stats should feed directly from our shaping systems, so there should be no delay, unless we're talking about milliseconds. These also feed directly into our internal support systems, so we definitely try to ensure no delays.

Could it be an issue with the download itself?

Still shaped into oblivion, are you guys going to offer us something as compensation for 25 days of constant shaping this month? (I'm not even going to mention January and February)

Correct me if im wrong but AH on MTN backbone use what they call star rating ?

Anyone that can explain how it works ?

Nope.

Not a star rating - but rather a percentage based on the network's usage. For example, If I'm down in Cape Town and there is a lot of usage in the area, there will be more shaping than if there was no usage in the area :)

It's completely dynamic, meaning that it is constantly changing.

Until Telkom delivers the additional capacity that we ordered last year, we unfortunately have to do what we can to preserve realtime Uncapped experience and Capped/Business performance on the network. So that basically means shaping to avoid realtime latency.

We used to use the star rating when we were with IS, and I think many IS based ISPs may still use this.

We don't do anything similar any more, we don't do "punitive" shaping or throttling, we simply respond dynamically to the demand on the network and we try to give everyone the best experience we can with the capacity we have available -s

Have you ordered more capacity since then? I think I speak for every AH uncapped user when I say that I sincerely hope so, because based on the state of your network at the moment that capacity increase will only last 1 month before we're in the same boat, if that

I have 25% Download/ 6.5% P2P at present. Still using my MWEB account instead.

It was ordered last year? And it still hasn't been implemented? Does it usually take this long (or rather, should it) or is this another Telkom fail?

That's exactly what I'm hoping doesn't happen. After finding out now how long it takes for the capacity to come through, ordering more in the meantime definitely seems like a good idea. Afrihost might say they may end up with too much then, and first want to see the effect of the capacity that's already been ordered, but looking at the current state of the network, and taking into consideration the fact that Afrihost is growing and will gain more customers in the near future (probably is constantly), I'm thinking more is definitely going to be a good idea.

We actually already put in another order for more capacity, even though our current order has not been fulfilled. We're trying to be as proactive as we can for making sure that we can mitigate any demand issues in the future.

There is literally no way to predict when Telkom can fulfil orders. As far as I can tell, all the IPC cards they use are custom made from overseas, so it sounds like they also waiting on orders to be fulfilled. There were a few MyBB articles posted late last year on other ISPs battling with IPC orders and the turnaround times involved. It causes some havoc with everyone's capacity planning :(

That does not answer the question of aybbleek

This is music to my ears.

Well done for being proactive finally.

Time will tell I guess.

Yet you continue to add customers, making the situation worse.

So I have finally been hit by this shaping and its pretty crappy, from getting downloads of 400 to 450 kbps to getting 80 to 100kbps on a 4mb line. I understand that capacity with Telkom is a major issue but why when the account is turbocharged do I get full speed from my line and when the turbo charge runs out it goes back to being shaped 75% downloads and P2P. surely the additional capacity on Telkom is still a problem regardless if the line it turbocharged or not. This is on a line of an average usage of 60gb per month over the last 3 months. So its not even like I use a lot of bandwidth.

Yet you continue to add customers, making the situation worse.

Not only do they add more customers, they also give away a load of free capacity, which according to AH they are short of, and then they need to shape us.

I think that free capacity can stop until the shaping problems are well and truly gone. Let the people paying get slightly better service. They deserve it... for paying.
