Afrihost Uncapped ADSL Feedback (Pt3)

Hi Afriman,

I have been with afrihost for more than four years now and in the entire time I have been with you, I have never known shaping like this until this past two months. I am currently being shaped at 12.5%/6.25% on a 10 mbps uncapped line, and that was almost 24/7 (there were two or three hours each morning between 4 am and 7 am when shaping was removed) until last Friday. Then I had a couple of days grace and now I am back to the same shaping policy. Now I hear you telling people that we should be expecting that sort of shaping during peak hours. How can you ever expect a twentieth of real line speed (it is actually more like a fortieth because the fastest p2p speeds I actually get are around 30 kbps)? That is not what I understood shaping to be when I signed up. I understood that your speed might be halved or even quartered if you downloaded excessively. My average monthly usage is about 150 GB. So when can we expect normalcy to resume ( and by that I mean pre-March speeds)? Thanks

This started at the end of December 2013, beginning of January 2014 bud, but I absolutely agree with you with all of your points. Every person I have spoken to outside of this forum that uses Afrihost has had the exact same experience

I think I've covered all of your concerns in an earlier post.

A Home Uncapped account is subject to shaping, along with shaping based on demand allows us to keep realtime services unshaped, this is all dictated by loads.

I'm sure we could unshape everyone at 7pm every night and see the contention go through the roof and the overall experience worsen. Everything is in place here to allow our clients the best possible experience.
If this Uncapped account works for you, then that's awesome. We aren't forcing anyone to move to a different account or change their online habits. If you solely rely on an unshaped connection due to business needs or anything else we can't recommend a Home Uncapped account. Some days it'll be unshaped, others not.

It's all up to what you want to do online and what you demand from the account.

I am talking about the level of shaping. How is 12.5%/6.25% ever justifiable? And, as I pointed out, I am not a heavy user. My account is basically only usable for a couple of hours a day tops.

Shaping is based on the overall demand on our network as opposed to your individual usage. We do this to allow us to keep realtime services like browsing, streaming etc available as an unshaped service.

Your accounts shaping is dynamically adjusted according to our usage. With the added capacity the shaping should be easing earlier.
 
Thank you for your reply, but the overall demand of the network did not seem to make any difference as the shaping was the same (12.5%/6.25%) for 21 hours each day. It did not vary - it was always at that level. And I also question why, at my level of usage, I am classified in the top bandwidth for shaping.

Same here 12.5/6.25 at 18.00 so let's see how the evening develops, but it seems hard to understand that we are still being shaped that hardly when an IPC partial upgrade was done...

We are seeing the South IPC started to ease off in terms of shaping, so lets see how things progress tonight.

How much of the expected IPC upgrade was delivered for the South region? And do you know when the rest will be installed?
 
East shaping has cleared so the capacity has had an improvement as shaping has been persisting to around 2am...

I'm really not sure on the exact numbers, sorry.
It does seem to be enough to be making a difference though - we're seeing some really positive feedback.
