Afrihost Uncapped ADSL Feedback (Pt3)

Hey, thanks for the reply.

The lag has been good since then, was probably just one of those intermittent things...

Regarding the shaping, I see that things unlock in the late hours of the morning, which is perfectly fine. Got ten gigs last night, so no issues there.

It would be good if HTTP downloads were not slowed down as much as they appear to be during the day, but all in all, I'm happy enough with the account as is.

Looking to get you guys to manage the line and switch to the business uncapped next month. If you can advise how I do that...

There was a big debate around HTTP, but the problem is that nowadays people have ways to disguise P2P as HTTP and that would open up an easy way to get around shaping without much effort. Poses a big threat to the network.

Not sure whats happening but im unable to get on the clientzone login page and youtube is struggling along

350ping to SA speedtest server :/

ClientZone was briefly offline for some software updates. You can still run the Network Test App if you've already downloaded it - should help me see what's going on. You can post here or drop me a PM.

AfriMan still waiting on a reply from my PM earlier this week regarding streaming sites and realtime service.

I understand. However, it's a little bit discouraging trying to download a perfectly legitimate file at 1/10th of your line speed.

As I mention above, I am thinking of getting you guys to manage the line, and change to a business account.

I would appreciate some reassurance that if I need to download via HTTP every now and again, it will be better than the current 1/10th or so I get now when the account is shaped on my regular package.

Thanks.

I'd like to believe that all traffic is legitimate - but I get you. Big difference between a driver or software patch and the latest XXX torrent :(

HTTP should only go to maximum of around 12.5% on the most severe policy. Otherwise we're generally more generous with HTTP than we are with P2P. Once we have achieved our full national upgrade, we should be able to adjust shaping to deliver the best overall experience.

Ah man - where do we go in good ol' Mzanzi to just get proper Internet these days ! :-(

I want to move to AH, but if this is the speeds you guys are getting - I'd rather stick with OW's 89kbps

It all depends on your line more than anything else. If your line is dismal on all networks, then it's probably somewhere on the line or exchange - maybe degraded copper wiring, or faulty infrastructure.

Have you tested a Free GB account yet?

My line is actually quite good - I have seen it run flat taps on OW back in the day ( ahhhhhh...the memories )....ermm...where was i ...

Well yeah - no my line is pretty good hey - i sync at 10Mb, but have a 4MB account with OW. I know on unshaped weekends ( not had those in a while either ) i can run max speeds no problem, however - recently i have hardly broken 100Kbps.

Then on the odd occasion things run OK. Not here to slag off any ISP - but I'm just fed up with OW and their sub-standard speeds recently. It's up and down , and people are cancelling left right and centre. I cannot pay for a 4MB account if all I'm getting is 1MB speeds most of the time.

PS : the 1GB account was used up in 40Mins streaming just two videos - the speeds were very good on speedtest ( 8.5Mb/s ) - but I kind of expected Netflix to stream HD almost immediately - but it never did stream in HD - only got to "buffering HD" during the 10 mins i watched.

Thanks !

LOL, I think you said this already - it's all coming back to me now ;)

The only way to know is to give it a try. I don't think you'll be stuck on crappy speeds. Remember we've also got a massive upgrade on the way for the North and South regions.

Thanks Afriman...well I already instructed them to cancel anyway, so I think I'll give you guys a go, if it's not for me, I'll just try the next ISP.

Cheers

I guess that's as fair as anyone could ever expect. Hope we can impress you :)
