Is port 443 being shaped? I use to be able to get full speed line speed (4 meg line) during any time of the day. But since their was an IPC issue on Monday, I've only been able to get around half of my normal 400kbps.

I really hope its not being shaped. I need the port for work. And no, I can't consider a business uncapped, since I my the line to make business calls as well as browse the net.

We don't shape by port, we use the traffic packet signature. So we don't actually touch any ports specifically, but if the traffic is analysed as P2P, then we would shape the traffic.

You are probably right. I tested now to Germany i get 10meg down i tested to San Francisco and i get 5meg down so it varies depending on server.

Your packets also have to travel a whole bunch further to reach San Francisco as opposed to Germany ;)

Do it! I moved over from openweb at the beginning of this year and I have not looked back since, just discovered the turboboost feature yesterday as well by accident :D. best ISP
 
Hey guys,

Another guy from Cape Town thinking about jumping ship from OW here. On OW my browsing during the daytime is slow and my latency to EU for League of Legends is unplayable (am actually using a capped Afrihost account until 6pm most weekdays). So I was wondering:

1) What kind of speeds do you get from a speedtest during the day? (My OW is usually 1 meg on a 4 meg account during the day)
2) Do all HTTP services work correctly? (My Gmail barely grafts properly with OW during the day)
3) If you're a gamer, what latency do you get to EU during the day?
4) How does their shaping/throttling work? Is it a rolling window or dynamic shaping (like OW used to do well)?

Well on Afrihost for the home uncapped products, realtime traffic is always unshaped so youtube, browsing, gaming etc... http and p2p are shaped depending on network demand. Capped accounts are 24/7 unshaped so p2p and http will go at full speed the whole day the same goes for the business packages. I know OW tells you their browsing is also unshaped but during the day you feel like you are in the 90s not with Afrihost realtime traffic is always unshaped.

Since you're in the Uncapped thread, I'm assuming your looking at Uncapped. Remember that we shape HTTP downloads and P2P when demand necessitates it on the network. We do display the shaping profile you're on in CLientZone so you have an idea of what speeds to expect on shaped services. Realtime services are 100% unshaped at all times.

Gaming is never shaped and we generally see around 160-180ms latency to the EU/UK. This would be ping to a server. For in-game latency, it would depend on the amount of traffic and capacity/load on that specific server.

We don't use rolling windows and thresholds. We shape by overall demand on the network :)

Since we've added a ton of new support people, or turnaround time for queries is much better, average hold time is mostly pretty low (around 10-15 seconds mostly) and as our people get more experienced and confident, the level of service is getting back to what our clients expect - which is all really, really awesome.

^^ All a prospective customer wants to know - just be honest from the outset, stay honest and provide a good service - you will then have a customer for life.
 
I guess the free 1gig account will be unshaped? like the other capped and business accounts?

Is it possible to get a trail account that is shaped like the uncapped accounts? This is a bit strange, but I would like to test what I would actually get in the end, since I am interested in getting a uncapped 4mb home account. I will be very sad if I get good speeds with the trail account, but when I get the thing I am paying for, I get something else.... meaning the shaping could possibly be so bad that I will have to get new internet somewhere else...

US and EU will test very differently cos WACS and EASSy terminate in the UK, and from there we use external networks and undersea cables to reach the US, etc.
