Afrihost Uncapped ADSL Feedback (Pt3)

Hi Afriman

I'm also very confused , thought if your shaping says :

Shaping Policy: 10% Download/ 5% P2P

Then you only download at 10 % of your full download speed.
However your support agent told me , I only download at 90 % of my full download speed.

But when I actually download I get 200kb to 300 kb on 20 mb VDSL with uncapped 20mb.

Already cancelled , think I will stay with Afrihost but stick to capped.

Enough rubbish uncapped and shaping policies that excessively punish low users (whether it's be insufficient network capacity in Pta east and terming it demand driven or otherwise doesn't matter to an end-customer). 50+50 and a 10meg line bundled with a 1meg uncapped. Router set to use the capped account and a virtual linux instance using the bridge mode of the modem.

Nah, that agent is not correct - it shows the percentage of line speed you can expect, not how much you've "lost"

Sorry about the bad information :(

Can you post the full trace - sounds like this may be related to congestion in your area if it's time based. No additional latency on the network in general last night :(

Hi AfriMan,

Forgive me if this has already been answered but could you please clear up the following for me;
I'm running a 10mb line at home with your 10Mb uncapped product. During the ongoing shaping fun we are having, if the shaping policy states 6,25% surely any nntp traffic should run at 62,5kbps and not the average of 27kbps I get now?

Thanks

It really depends, we try to give you an expectation of what speeds could be under ideal conditions, but unless you have a perfect download stream with no other services running, there could be variances as QoS is applied :(

I'm seeing intermittent spikes here - even at your router you should never go as high as 2ms (should be sub 1ms) and then up to 28ms on the second hop - not terrible but concerning vs 11ms earlier.

Could be congestion or a line fault. I'm not seeing general latecny in the Cape - seems mostly pretty steady and pretty good.

I can confirm that the line is very stable and even when there is no other line activity the 27Kb is the absolute maximum nntp will download at.
Maybe my client zone should show 2.7% instead ?

Problem is, around 18:00 last night my ping went sky high 600ms+ stayed like that throughout the night, around 5 in the morning it went back to normal.

Tried Turbocharge but that did not help one bit.

Will report back if it happens again tonight. This modem needs to be replaced but never had issues before on the ping side of things while gaming.

It seems to be especially on the lower profiles :(

If your ping spikes, but it's not a general network issue, it could be elsewhere. In general, if we're seeing problems on the network affecting ping, we'll see that across Uncapped, Capped and Business - which I haven't seen yesterday or today.

So definitely post a full traceroute or the Network App results when this happens so I can see more :(

Well whatever this test account is that the CC team gave me, I want one. Works perfectly.

Got home and tested my home uncapped on youtube, shaping active and youtube sux. Speed spikes all over the place.

Put the test account in and whalla. Perfect.

Hope they can find the problem as it's not my line or exchange as this demonstrates.

I want one of those as well! :)

I have resorted to trying business for next month...

I suggested ages ago to change the language in the client zone and just add the word "speed", and will stop all the confusion :wtf:

Work smart, not hard ;):D

Packet loss on a business ADSL account.

Hi all

In the process of moving from MWEB to Afrihost purely on a pricing issue and had good results on a "pay as you go" (unshaped) account with Afrihost that I subscribed to. Therefore decided (with much trepidation) to move to Afrihost.

Now on an uncapped, unshaped 4M business account with Afrihost so no shaping/throttling issues to contend with. All was good to start with and then the VOIP PABX started reporting the server as unreachable. Spent a few days trying to solve the problem as I thought it may be a configuration issue only to find out that the real problem was an abnormally high packet loss on the Afrihost connection. It ranges from about 4% to >20%. Changed the router to 3 different routers and tried each on 2 different ADSL lines - packet loss was consistent. From what I could see the fault appeared to be within the MTN network. See attached screenshot.

Logged a fault with Afrihost and got the usual "Kindly please Be advised i picked up errors on the line and cleared them" Need I say that nothing changed. Need I add that there was total denial of any problem on the Afrihost side. Now a bit angry so did some further tests and changed nothing other than the username and password back to the MWEB account. Surprise!! Packet loss at ZERO, NOTHING, NOT ONE. Changed it back to Afrihost and NO SURPRISE back to 5% packet loss.

To some this is a clear indication of a line fault. These people need help. Fast!! Please save me from this nonsense. It is time for service providers to stand up and acknowledge problems right up front. Denial only serves to create enormous customer frustration and anger. As I was in the process of moving to Afrihost at that time I watched the forum discussion on the problems in the "Southern Region" with weeks of denial until there was only some admission when the evidence became totally overwhelming. This really does create some seriously angry customers. Surely it is really simple to do the tests and confirm the complaints. Not rocket science for an average level of competence. The first step to solving a problem is to acknowledge and recognise the problem. Denial is the road to hell.

Afriman / Afriguy please assist.

Looks like your line has some serious issues. Are you running that mtr over wifi? If your line is with AH they'll most likely have to log a fault with Telkom which could take a while.

Also running VOIP over ADSL, no matter how good the DSL, is not the best of approaches. Speak to VOX about a 1:1 PtP link for the VOIP only perhaps.

Man after the detailed explanation NarrowBand gives some people still points to line fault LOL. Same issue here with streaming buddy, with Nowvideo. Everything works like a wonder on Mweb, Afrihost it's buffer, play, buffer, play.
