Attached results from RIOT's network diagnostic script below.

Odd, it seems to get lost somewhere around the Level3 CDN network, so I'm not sure what could be happening. The server could be blocking ping, but we'll need to look into this.

Will you PM me?

Again, MTN have not yet bought into Afrihost, that deal is still pending competition board approval, so they have literally not set foot in our offices yet. And the plan is that aside from reports, they won't have anything to do with how or what we do, unless we ask for their input or support. As the biggest telecoms operator on the continent (which I believe they are) they can offer a lot of advise and technical support to helping us devise some awesome products and value-adds for our clients.

Problem is, from deal finalisation onwards, basically every rand you spend is 50c from MTN... so you'll need permission for anything going forward.

That's how I see it, anyway.

If you look at the Zappos/Amazon deal - many people said it would go a different way and it hasn't. Zappos is growing as a brand and still innovating in the online and service space. It's a great example of what we're trying to achieve.

Gaming is definitely not shaped, unless the traffic signature contains P2P elements. We can determine that by using a turbocharge while gaming.

Remember that shaping also only affects throughput and not latency, so it sounds like there could be another issue here :(

I'd love to know what this 'other issue' is, because as soon as I switched to WA I had no problems at all. I was monitoring my bandwidth usage through my router the entire time, and there was nothing other than LoL traffic at that time. The exact same thing happened pretty much all day yesterday, and I decided to try one last time after 10PM with no success. In any case, I consider the issue resolved from my side. I've moved on and will discourage friends/family/clients/strangers/whatever from signing up with AH for the foreseeable future.

As I said, we can test if that game traffic is being shaped easily by using the Turbocharge feature and giving it 10-15 minutes to kick in and affecting traffic. If traffic is being shaped, we'll need to determine if this is due to P2P elements within the traffic, or if the game traffic is misclassified.

LOL is obviously a well known game, but depends on the servers you're playing on. Each may use different traffic protocols. Again, only throughput would be affected if the game traffic was shaped. If you getting latency and disconnects, that would be unusual.

I will test the turbocharge tonight but LazerFazer is correct, the issue is non-existent when using the WebAfrica account. I will provide test results from both accounts when I get home and try the turbocharge to see if it is a shaping issue.

More unhappiness

I am not a fan of mob-mentality, nor of the let's-all-abandon-ship-at-the-first-sign-of-things-going-wrong mindset. That said, this is a truly sad event for me.

Afrihost is reminding me of the Opera browser - Version 12.x was EXCELLENT (as it has been for years) and then C-level decisions led them to jumping in bed with Google and the resulting "Chropera" leaves A LOT to be desired in terms of user experience. This, in turn, led to a lot of people abandoning the new build in favor of staying with the old one.

Afrihost Home Uncapped also used to be a great product but unfortunatly some C-level decisions had led them to perma-shape their loyal, paying customer base, all in the name of "testing" to "deliver a constant user experience" and focusing on steaming only. (I say perma-shape because unshaped between 22:00 - 07:30 is truly laughable). Unfortunately, in sharp contrast to Opera, their users have no option of "sticking with the old version"......

In the beginning days, Afrohost Home Uncapped was such an excellent product that I recommended it to my friends, family and colleagues and actively engaged with them to help them switch - something that I am deeply regretting now as relevance of my advise in the eyes of those who turn to me for answers has just taken a SERIOUS knock, on the back of me advising them to get a product which now ultimately sucks. The only good thing is that it is month-to-month so at least we can all leave when we want to.

It definitely concerns us that our image would be tarnished, or that client's would view us differently.

@AfriMan, I can assure you that it is not a matter of your image would be tarnished - it is a matter of this has already happened, probably irrevocably so. As we all know, it takes YEARS to build trust with someone and only suspicion, not even proof, to destroy that.

If you feel that I am being unreasonable, then consider how Afrihost would feel if all it's Home Uncapped users had to, without warning or advertising the fact, employ "semi-shaping" on the payments that we make to you and then offering numerous, politically correct, well-crafted responses about how this is a "testing" phase on our budgets and that we are preserving the "real-time experiences" of our other budget items such as food and petrol? But don't worry, we'll unshape our payments again in September and we have just been in touch with our technical budget directors and they promise you that we will make it our TOP priority to ensure that we start unshaping our payments again AS QUICKLY AS POSSIBLE after August.....

I urge you to spare me the indignity of having to read a response where you explain to me how you have always been a "customer-centric company" who "care about the experience of their users" and make decisions "for the benefit of your customers". I also don't care much to be wished "all the best going forward" as a result of Ahrihost's decisions and actions forcing a large part of their user base to vote with their wallets. Rather, forward this response, along with all the other expressions of dissatisfaction, to Gian, the tech director, the guy who invented Turbo-boost, the tea lady and everyone else you need to in order to speed up the end of this fiasco.

It is my firm belief that you have small window left to save face and return the happiness of your loyal, paying users before you permanently get labeled "The New M-Web" - a stigma that I am sure any self-respecting South African ISP would rather avoid!

but I do believe that as long as we don't change our culture and our motivation (our clients experience) we will find a way.
(emphasis mine). The problem is that this is not the case, as can be easily ascertained.

OK that's the end of my rant. I have, in a selfish attempt to make myself feel better about this whole issue through the use of weak humor, attached a picture that you can use to advertise your new Home Uncapped (Streaming) product on your website.:mad:

IPC is not maxing out now that we're shaping as we are, this is helping us prevent periods of high contention that were affecting streaming and gaming during peak periods. We have sufficient headroom to provide consistent realtime experience, so traffic can burst to the speeds they need for streaming, and I think that if we can also start unshaping our clients faster after 10pm, if that's possible, we can give a significant window for unshaped downloading and torrents for a good overall Uncapped experience. I've been assured by our Technical Director that looking at giving back as much bandwidth as we can in the off-peak is our top priority at the moment.

Sigh... I was responding to @Bl1zz4rd's response of being shaped at 3am. If shaping only eases after 3am then your IPC is maxing out!

How do you suppose that will happen? What's the solution?

On a related note, over the past week I've been noticing I'm not becoming unshaped at around midnight as per usual. I've been up at 3am on numerous mornings and still have 25%/6.5% shaping applied. Judging from the amount of data I'm able to pull per night, it seems as though I'm only becoming unshaped for maximum 1 hour, just before the shaping window begins in the early morning again. Has something changed?

I appreciate your frustration and I take many of the points you make here. Ultimately we're here to engage each other, so making a statement and then saying I'm not interested in the response kind of defeats the purpose. As a company we've faced many challenges and I would say that we've always come out on the side of our clients and managed to sustain our growth and, more importantly, to retain our culture of innovation and service. I do believe that we'll do this now, and in the future, because we have a strong vision and strong values guiding our decisions.

I can understand if you don't want to read this response (as per your comment about indignity) so hopefully this will help those who are here to engage with us and work together.

As I mentioned, this is not a capacity issue. We're working on unshaping as many clients as quickly as possible after 10pm. I believe we have sufficient capacity to do this, but will obviously depend on demand using the dynamic system.

Then why is there max shaping at 3am?

Not taking into account that all the downloading that used to happen between 6am and 10pm is now ALL happening after 10pm. 24 hours into 6 hours, does not fit.

The latest I've seen anyone be unshaped is 2am, which I still think we can improve on. I don't know the complexities of the system, but studying the graphs, I believe that this can be achieved.

By doing what? Bandwidth doesn't grow on trees.

There was always shaping present, though possibly in varying degrees, especially for lighter users, so I don't believe we have radically altered the usage patterns of clients. We have done just enough though to maximise our resources.

Moving more bandwidth overnight has been a cause I've been pushing for a long time. As I've said, it's hard for us to continually push for more capacity when we have this 9 hour window where usage falls off dramatically. We pay for IPC 24 hours a day, and the more we can maximise this downtime, the more value our clients can realise and the more strong our case can be for pushing for more capacity in the long term.

You dont get it do you? You dont force customers into what you want them to do. It goes the other way around

Like I said it's not about running out of capacity. We want to maximise the use of the network at all times, this is in both our clients interests and our own. If we can work on giving more bandwidth back to clients as quickly as possible so they can be less shaped or unshaped as quickly after 10pm as possible, then they can get more benefit from the IPC downtime as possible.

We'd love to be able to meet every demand and request made in this forum and via other channels. But ultimately we have a limited amount of resources. Those resources (or their costs) determine the pricing we can offer to clients and ultimately the value for money they receive. So our only intention is to design the very best product we can, with the resources we have, and structure it to offer the best value for money (while making sure it's sustainable).
