Afrihost Uncapped ADSL Feedback (Pt3)

We may be confusing general network management with more direct traffic management on certain protocols (similar to shaping). We don't prioritise any traffic on Business and Capped the same way we do for Uncapped for a smoother experience.
I don't think we're confusing anything here. I just think the statement is incorrect, or if not it may help you to fix things. If all packets are treated equally in a contended bandwidth environment you'll have massive packet loss issues. There's still QoS applied on these packets. If you can't prioritise and deprioritise correctly you're going to be running an incredibly inefficient network, which I don't think you guys are aiming for. These packets are still identified and funneled into queues using various forms of QoS, even if they're unshaped. You've also got to manage the contention properly.

I think these are two different issues. Like I said, general network management versus individual QoS. On Uncapped, we apply QoS on an individual basis to give each user a smoother experience based on their individual traffic, especially between shaped and unshaped services.

This is not the case with Capped and Business accounts.

How we manage contention and overall network traffic is not what we're talking about in this instance.

I'm not a big downloader, streaming and browsing is what I mainly use my account for.

So in essence my query is this, if I wanted to return to an uncapped account, what would have to be done in order for me to get the same performance on the uncapped account as on the capped account?

In terms of streaming and browsing you should have a similar experience, although you may find some elements that are bandwidth heavy (like large image websites that don't use thumbnails for graphics) may be a little slower than normal. Essentially, realtime services and experience should be very similar (if you are matching the Uncapped account to your line potential).

AH, why don't you offer an Uncapped Unshaped product that has true unmeasured , no nonsens , No Data limit, No Shaping.

Put a price on it, and keep that product stable and service levels up!.

I think that is what the guys here want, in general people don't like jumping from one ISP to another. They only jump or get grumpy if they feel their getting less that what they used to get. {Ie being shaped more, or being throttled etc}

Perhaps I'm being a bit pedantic, but I was genuinely interested in the no QoS statement.

We already have that in Business, which is unshaped and unmetered. There are absolutely no restrictions placed on Business aside from the rate limit to the product you purchased and the single concurrent connection. Otherwise, it is constructed like a Capped account.

and if you run Skype/Peer to Peer apps during the daytime ? Will you'll get full linespeed then ? 24/7 (maybe 8mbit or 10mbit)

and AH won't moan if you download to the maximum 24/7 also ? 2TB a month is fine ?

Why would streaming/Netflix struggle to stream then ? like WhatWhat said : Streaming sucks on it though.

Business is not shaped. It doesn't matter what services you use, we don't impose any restrictions on the bandwidth.

We have seen some reports of streaming issues. I've personally tested YouTube extensively as well as Netflix, and I believe that our international throughput is excellent. We have noticed that some US based services could be better and we're working very actively to improve every aspect of this to ensure our clients have the best experience possible.

Cool, Thanks for the info Afriman. I'll give the Business Uncapped 10mbit a go.

Yes they should be very similar but there is a stark difference in the performance of Netflix and YouTube between capped and uncapped.

To give an example, I had constant buffering issues on Netflix on uncapped whereas there are no more issues on capped and the video is definitely streaming at a higher quality.

So to repeat my question, how can I get the same performance on an uncapped account? If it is a QoS issue as previously stated, surely the gap in performance can be bridged.

So I decided enough is enough and cancelled my Uncapped....send a mail to their 60days money back gaurentee...

Got told no problem, we sad to see you go and will canceled your account with immediate effect and can still stop your aug debit order.....

WTF? so what about your policy of double money back gaurenteed?...what the F is the use of a policy of a company if you as AH can change it as you please?? as long as it helps AH, you dont give 2 ****s what it does to your clients....

Afriman, Afriguy, please answer me via PM by close of business today.

We can definitely continue to test the circumstances that you are running your services to see if we can improve service. Remember that QoS would only come into play if you are running multiple services, so that would be the first place to start.

We've never defaulted on our 60 day doublemoney back guarantee. But we pay back what you paid us, so discounts and credited services are not included in the refund. Also, it must be an eligible service, so Bundles (which are discounted/subsidised), Lines and Devices (amongst others) are not eligible for the claim, mostly because we've already discounted them to offer low prices.

You're welcome to PM and I will investigate the claim, and on what reasons it was rejected (whether this was done correctly or not)

What you say and what your site says

We Believe We're The Best Choice For You!
So we've decided to take all the risk onto our backs.
If at any time in the first 60 days you feel that we did not live up to our promises and you choose to leave us, we'll pay you back DOUBLE what you've paid us on that package, up to the point that you cancel - no strings and no questions!

Makes no sense.

Hi Just regarding the streaming and netflix. I have a 4mb Uncapped business account with Afrihost. Telkom still holds my line they only do the data. I have a old router mega 105 and have been streaming Netflix on one PC (HD Quality) and on my Apple TV (HD as well) wile playing online games. I have been doing this for a few months now. No issues so far.

If you read the small print section at the bottom of the page it will outline where the double money claim does not apply, including the ones I mentioned in my post.

That's awesome. I do believe from the feedback I've seen that many clients are having a good experience on our network.
