If you don't mind, please let us know if your problem gets resolved, I'm very interested to find out what's causing the issues.

Will do.

As matters stand now I sent through my results from yesterday afternoon and again this morning (where no shaping was active) to highlight the difference in streaming performance.

They are now investigating possible causes.

Thanks, much appreciated.

Thanks so much for doing this. I think the guys at Critical Care are looking at this and will escalate if we can't figure it out without MTN's help.

No worries. If it can help them figure out what is causing the difference then all the better as I might not be the only person suffering from this.

For the time being I am using the capped account while they do their digging.

We definitely appreciate it. As you say, if it helps us find a serious issue on our side, then it benefits everyone. Thanks for doing that :)

The 5th I asked a simple question on your support system. Clearly the "24 Hour Client support" is just a marketing scheme. Will also be moving next month. Thanks for nothing.

Sorry that I missed your question, I promise it was not intentional. I checked your post history but I can't find your original question.

We definitely do have 24 hour support from our Support team, not necessarily on forums and social media (our official hours are from 8am to 8pm during weekdays).

Could you please repeat the question or PM so I can help?

Regomoditswe Did eventually respond today. He did try to explain your procedures/ policies. No direct answer as to usages that qualifies one as a "level 5" user. I do appreciate the response.

Regards

We shape all users at the same level during peak time, but thereafter shaping is dynamic. There is no threshold totally that guarantees being unshaped or shaped (at a particular level). It's completely dependant on realtime demand. We're seeing the vast majority of Uncapped users being lightly shaped or unshaped before 12, and only the most aggressive users unshaped by around 2am.

For me the sad thing about this as a 10mb uncapped user is the fact that my package is not the same, It was an awesome package to be on up until March this year, as the time I could easily get between 200 - 300 kbps during peak hrs and outside of that ie off peak I would reach 1mps. These days I reach speeds between 10 - 20 kbps peak hrs and only close to midnight I would reach 1mps.

...its as if Afrihost is taking the same stance as Mweb, I was an Mweb client as was many others who are now Afrihost clients and what happened Mweb lost clients because of the shapping... I feel as your client that you are concentrating more on getting out mobile devices and mobile data (which is all great) and as a result due to the "poor speeds" and when I say that I mean "shaping", you are losing clients /going to lose more clients. More and more users are moving to Web Africa and other ISP's of what I heard. You are going to lose your client base... What happened to the Afrihost company I joined which offered great packages and value for money. Lets face it, to be shapped up until before 12(midnight) from 8am the same day on a 10mb account is not attractive, plus to be shaped the same as all users meaning the 2mb account and the 10mb account is being shaped the same yet the difference in cost of the accounts is big. I propose that you relook at packages and shaping, if it means that you need to upgrade your exchanges then do so. Part of Afrihost being so successful was because of the drive you HAD is offering your client base GREAT packages, well its not that GREAT anymore! You claim its pure internet joy! it should now say was pure internet joy!

There shouldn't be problems with throughput on unshaped services on Uncapped. So if you're getting diminished throughput, we need to diagnose further. It could be related to something else or another issue. From my tests, I was able to get consistent throughput on Uncapped for streaming, for example.

We are definitely not forgetting about our DSL clients (or our Web Hosting clients) in favour of Mobile. Obviously, with Mobile being a big new area for us, we've spent a lot of time creating a footprint in the market. But ultimately our mission is to create great service experiences for our clients, no matter what product they buy from us. We don't ever want any client on any product to have a poor experience.

Seems like the shaping has relaxed a bit recently. Getting much better P2P speeds than normal nowadays. YouTube etc also much better than normal.
Call center still up to **** though :(

saturday morning shaping - 18.8% http and 6.25 p2p.

I'm lucky if i get unshaped after 2am till like 6am.
So it looks like the account is good for browsing and that's about it at the moment.

This is in Durban...

Any specific reason as to why the shaping has been so harsh lately?

They have been testing for about a month now I think with full shaping from 6am till 10pm and then dynamically unshape based on load.

You sure? I thought it was always dynamically shaped/unshaped depending on the load?
Are they now having full shaping from 6am til 10pm?

No, they shape maximum until 10pm. Then they start unshaping people, with most people getting unshaped around 10pm to 2am. So some people only have 4 hours of unshapedness.

I don't understand why you must be shaped to 18.8% on HTTP on a Saturday? :erm:

If they enforcing 18.8% on HTTP and 6.25 % throughput on P2P on week days and nights and its not unshaped on weekends at the least, then I guess they might as well call it a browsing account.
