I went from uncapped to uncapped business to capped to....cancellation at the end of this month. I have had 6 months of torture and my previous love for afrihost was the only thing that kept me connected. The love affair is officially over

What was the issue with Business uncapped and capped?

My personal issue with Business Uncapped is having to pay a premium, and subscribe to a "business" product for personal use, to have reasonable use of my 10mb line at 8pm.

I guess it's a case of different strokes for different folks, or what you mean by reasonable use. At the end of the day, if realtime services are performing as they should, then we believe that's how our Uncapped works best for most of our clients. We have the turbocharge feature for others who need a little more. Uncapped is still one of our most popular DSL products.
 
Anyone else have this problem atm?
I can't play games because my ping is all over the place because of Package loss.

I've been really frustrated with my home uncapped recently. It always seems to be shaped (when I'm at home anyways).

The sad thing is that it used to be great but the last 3 months or so it's been useless.

I mainly use real time services and watching a YouTube video on anything higher than 240p in the evenings is useless.

I've tried the support route and it's always the same story. Looks like afrihost got too big too fast and now they don't have adequate capacity to provide a decent service.

Guess capped it is then.

Still shaped at 10:30pm, my usage must be excessive...
Considering this is one of the most in months to come that I will download, since I am replacing 2 Hard drives in my laptops.

I could not even download Avast virus software on a Saturday afternoon - 2kB/s.

There must be a capacity issue - Afrihost used to shape when necessary - now it is all the time - and it takes a long time after 10pm to unshape.

Realtime services should continue to be good on Uncapped. We're only shaping non-realtime services. With the shaping we've implemented temporarily between 7:30am and 10:00pm, we're generally seeing much better throughput and realtime performance, especially on Youtube.

Have you run any testing or diagnostics on your connection when the performance is poor?

Remember that unshaping after 10:00 is dynamic. Most users are less shaped within an hour and unshaped by midnight, but that can vary according to demand at the time.

Also remember that the South starts a little later in the morning and ends a little later in the evening becuase of the different usage patterns in that region.
 
I am being shaped well after 12 and i have had to trial another account isp account in the meantime and decide what to do...
I've never experienced shaping this bad, it seems to be getting worse every month... I will stay up as late as possible tonight and upload a screenshot of my shaping after 12 and its always 18.8 http and 6.25 for torrents!

It's not a capacity issue. In case you weren't following the thread, we are shaping all Uncapped users between 7:30am and 10:00pm in the North and East (slightly later in the South) to ensure that we can deliver low-contention and consistent performance, especially on realtime services, for Uncapped users. So at the moment, during that peak window, we should see excellent throughput on realtime services.

After the peak window, we use dynamic shaping - based on demand in each individual region to determine shaping or unshaping.

You don't need to stay up late, just drop me a PM and I'll check your shaping history to see when you're being unshaped and shaped.
 
I have a few questions about your shaping policy:

1. I've been having trouble with Spotify recently, which is P2P. Is all P2P traffic shaped, including legitimate services like Spotify?
2. Can you point me to a thread with details on your policy explaining what percentages are applied when - it seems recently it's become more severe. I don't understand what "Download 25% / P2P 6.5% means exactly.
3. I used to be able to see my monthly totals, but now I can only see daily stats, even in the logs emailed to me. How can I find them? "Old clientzone" showed them, but now redirects to new clientzone.

Great questions, thanks for asking these :)

1. We rely on the shaping technology provider mostly to do frequent updates on services that are classed as "exceptions" to the general realtime and non-realtime shaping policies. This includes games, streaming services, etc. The general rule is that if the traffic has a P2P packet signature you can expect it to be shaped. The easy way to test would be to Turbocharge and see if throughput on the service radically increases.

2. We don't have a thread where we have done this, because at the moment we're shaping all Uncapped accounts to the same level during peak period between 7:30am and 10:00pm, and thereafter we shape according to a dynamic system that shaped according to demand on the network.

3. We hope to eventually include that in later updates to ClientZone. For the moment you would need to download your logs and then use a spreadsheet to total the usage whichever way suits your purpose.

Could you explain how I "Turbocharge"?
If it doesn't fix the problem, is there a way I can put in a request for an exception?
