Afrihost Uncapped ADSL Feedback (Pt3)

MickeyD has challenged me to ask about torrent speeds on uncapped Afihost. What performance do you typically get during the day, and weekends?

Torrents will be shaped during peak hours, but after hours we unshape dynamically and according to the overall network load.

In other words, P2P will be shaped all day and possibly night if the network load is high. Don't expect to see full p2p speeds after peak hours everyday.

Not necessarily :)
Nearly 9 hours last night/ this morning where nearly all users would have been unshaped.

So i kindly got a trail account from a new isp. Now this is REAL internet...

I think I might be using them come the first... :)

What are "after hours" and are the speeds so low it could take days to complete, or just lower than line speed?

What speeds would you get on 2Meg during the day. On weekends?

expect nothing while the sun shines
expect low speeds during the evening early morning
expect good speeds between 12-3am

for me it is so random

We start un-shaping at 22:00 and see shaping start again at 07:30, however this is still being tested on the network so not official or set in stone just yet.
P2P and downloads are shaped, it's shaped down to a percentage of your total line speed.

Realtime services are left untouched.

It depends if you are heavy user or not. If you do around 150-250gb a month you get shaped to about 80% of the time during the whole month. No weekend exceptions.

It's 00:35 right now and I'm shaped at: 25% Download/ 6.5% P2P
When I stayed up the whole night once, I saw shaping lift up to 75% download/ 75% P2P at 2am. Than drop to 25%/6.5% at around 7am. Haven't checked recently but shaping has been getting worse.

Torrents gets shaped at about 6.5% of your line speed so if you line is 2mb you get about 15kb download on torrent. If you become heavy user and take into account shaping and unshaped time, you can do about 1-2gb per day.

Just get business uncapped if you want full download speed. Also Incredible Corruptions has sale on their 4mbp account at R200 till 5 Oct.

Thanks, that sounds complex.

We try to be as open as possible about our shaping, which is why we display the applicable percentages in ClientZone whenever you are shaped or unshaped.

Remember that demand is the main factor. We shape when demand is high and then decrease or unshape when demand decreases. So the time that you are less shaped or unshaped always depends on the realtime demand on the network (in your region). Generally we see most clients become less shaped from around 10pm, and unshaped by midnight. Heavier users will usually only be unshaped by as late as 2am - but it's completely dependant on demand and will vary from day to day.

Here's an idea - prominently display this information in your advertising!

We are currently experiencing increased demand in the North[/n] region (Johannesburg, Pretoria and surrounding areas). As a result, some users may experience diminished throughput (speeds) on their DSL.

Our network team are investigating the issue and will be implementing changes to optimise efficiency to manage demand. We apologise for any inconvenience to affected clients and assure them that we are doing everything possible to improve their internet experience.
