Afrihost Uncapped ADSL Feedback (Pt3)

That's cool and all, but last time at least the capped and business guys weren't affected. now they are. It seems worse actually than last time.

From my memory Business and Capped were affected at times, but we managed to implement more shaping on Uncapped (or at least more efficient shaping on already shaped services) to ensure that we could provide sufficient performance on Business/Capped. By the time Business and Capped were showing poor results, we had managed to secure the upgrades. I do think that this round of upgrades are going to go very quickly, that was the assurance I was given.

Hi, with the last upgrade we were told that AH is looking for the sweet spot in order to manage shaping on the uncapped account. That was the reason given for shaping down to 12.5/6.25 during the day.

By now I think everyone is aware that there is no sweet spot and that the shaping is now permanently set to max during the day and only is reduced at night.

Will you be able to change that with the new update?

I can't answer that right now, it will really depend on how the network performs. I would say that we will always try to give back as much capacity to clients as possible. But for now, I don't think we're going to make any changes until we see how the network performs.

Just a by the way.

Is the permanently enforced shaping from 7 till 10 still considered testing after 2.5 months?

I still cannot find any mention of this on your product page? When will that be published for prospective clients to know what they are getting?

I'm quite sure the testing and data gathering is still on-going. Data patterns are changing all the time and we try to nail down what's exactly happening.
We'll keep you guys in the loop the moment anything changes.

it's also very expensive to have them ratified by attorneys, etc, so you can't really update terms and AUP too frequently

lets not blame lawyers here. Its not that expensive to have your company lawyers (who are on a retainer anyways) look over a changed paragraph.

thats one of the more creative excuses in a long time

There's an easy solution: make your terms so nebulous that you can materially change the product you're providing without falling foul of your own legalese. It genuinely stings to see the former champions of ISPs turn into experts in notpologies and nosplenations.

Maybe true, but I think we'd rather put the funds towards something more productive than constantly updating the AUP :)

I think Afriman answered that one indirectly as an answer to my question one above your post. As far as what I read into it, he is saying that the status quo is not anymore a testing phase but a permanent solution.

And as he mentioned even after the update it's not clear whether this will change.

Phrases like depending on network performance show me that this is not planned either after the update.

Just my thoughts hope I'm wrong

There seem to be major issues with all my ISP accounts (except MWEB). Throughput is in the toilet, especially international.

I am starting to suspect that even though some ISP are to blame, Telkom is the one common denominator. I think their new policy of enforcing their FUP has had a blanket effect on ALL accounts and ISP's, not just their clients. Maybe someone made a stuff-up and thought it might be cool the enforce the FUP on the user LINES, as opposed to their ISP accounts?

...this might explain the sorry state of internet at the moment? I can't see how every ISP in the country is all of a sudden experiencing massive up-take and contention at the same time.

...and that then amounts to throttling, doesn't it?
when you restrict a service consistently at the same rate for the same period of time, that is THROTTLING.

Current issue with Afrihost. Some sites will not load. Connection refused error. Also some games will not log in, same issue, connection refused.

Changed to WebAfrica, works fine.

Download speed on Steam with Turbocharge on is still only at 25% my line speed...

EDIT: Took about 30mins before my download went at full speed. Way to waste a turbocharge...

After numerous tickets and poor service from Afrihost I finally had enough and closed my account.
Signed up with another ISP for the exact same uncapped account (only a few R difference) and all has been working fine for over 2 months.

This is after the ADSL line / modem and everyone else was blamed by the very friendly but utterly useless Afrihost techs.

I still have email hosted but seeing that half the time I get timeouts connecting to my server i will move that too.

Sad ... very very sad considering how many clients i convinced to go to Afrihost which is now biting me in the proverbial.

Afrihost DNS currently seems on the fritz for many foreign sites hosted by AWS, returning 127.0.0.1.
Changing DNS server to Google's at 8.8.8.8 fixed this for me.
Anyone else having the same problem?
No after hours support

I just wanted to drop by and say thank you to afrihost for resolving my shaping latency issues. The matter was dealt with within a day with none of the support problems I had last year.

I can hardly believe this is the same company. I had to wait a while before writing this, because I was quite skeptical that it was actually resolved without any issue.

Much respect for afriman and the member from the critical care team, who helped me for not only make sure that the issue was resolved but went as smooth as possible!:)

Cannot play Destiny on PS4 at all since Wednesday. I thought it might be PSN/Destiny servers but using a WebAfrica account the game seemed fine. This seems like the exact same shaping issue I had with League of Legends a couple of weeks ago. Are you guys mucking about with the shaping settings again and in turn have just about stuffed up every game service AGAIN?

Seriously considering switching ISPs since you guys can't even seem to properly manage your network.

Nice, I had to wait 3 months for them to fix 720p streaming on Youtube.
