How's the AH network doing? I can only assume that "no news is good news" as a quiet forum is a clear sign of contentedness. Frankly, the clientzone is the only thing going for AH IMHO, and their price, it's just the MTN network I don't like. I would rather be on a network like IS where I can control my level of shaping (keep bulk downloads to overnight) instead of AH's random if-too-many-people-are-downloading-you get shaped policy and this is one of the things I don't like, the other being MTN's unstable network.

Don't get me wrong, IMHO, it's great when it works, like now, but that's only because everyone is on holiday (it's hard to watch netflix when you're on the beach), wait until the new year, and if by some miracle, things hold together when business starts, it will just be a matter of time before they have some issue like IPC down (happens a lot), authentication (happens a lot) or high latency (happens a lot) etc.

They're cheap so maybe have a backup account for the rough times? EDIT: Had a think about that one and AH uncapped aint cheap so...

I'm at work during the day so daytime is not an issue for me, although if I keep above 2 stars then I don't get any complaints from the household.

To make your decision easier, I'll take AH uncapped anyday over a 1 star IS account, but then don't be on one star. I can do about 350GB (overnight downloading) on my 4mb line and remain on 4 or 5 stars. I'm not a gamer so I don't do steam updates so YMMV.

Most people are on holiday.

Already said that.

Hey all,

Sorry if i missed any discussions about this...but have the removed the 'stabilise my line' option in clientzone?

I can't seem to find it

#Edit

Nevermind, i found it... i was being an idiot

We haven't removed the feature but it only works for some clients as Telkom have upgraded some exchanges and changed the back end function we interfaced with to make this possible. Port resets work mostly, but line sync stabilisation is mostly not accessible to us at the moment :(

It comes down to what works for you. Our Uncapped also offers features like Turbocharge which means that for these who don't want to spend time scrutinising their downloads, they can be unshaped when they want to be, and also if you do by some chance download more that you planned, you are not penalised if there is spare capacity on the network. So most of our clients have a significant time being unshaped, and we've also done a lot of upgrades to our network recently so even heavier users are less shaped at peak times that they have been. Our clients are able to access a lot of data, and also have guaranteed unshaped realtime services (I think most other Uncapped services don't discriminate once they start rating you down for high usage).

But like I said, it's a matter of preference for the individual :)

Dunno what happened but low stable ping and fast page loads and streaming almost flawless .......... me likey

The 18.8% Download/ 6.25% P2P is back, but it was a good 2 weeks of true uncapped internet.

I don't really mind the shaping at the moment. Websites are loading fast, pings are good & streaming is okay to a little sluggish. I will have to get back to downloading after hours again!

I hear you, YMMV kinda thing :)

Anyway, welcome back and happy new year :)

Are you AfriMan's clone :p

My liver didn't get much rest but otherwise, yes, it was a welcomed break :D

Haha, not his Clone, but I did pass along your message to him, he should be in later today.

Yes... I re-discovered Lion Lager, what a great beer!

Your ping to the 3rd hop (this is usually the 2nd hop for most) to the exchange/BRAS is too high. We like to see it under 30ms and generally in the region of around 10ms. Seems pretty erratic after that.

The real big problem are from hop 7.

Hi, any reason why the speed is down in Melkbos, Capetown? Ping 155ms and D/l 0.32Mbps on a 4 M line?

Traffic was pretty stable at the time of your post so I'll need a little more info. Did you run a full trace to see where the latency originated?

Afriman we have a problem. Iv'e had this issue since the beginning of December and I'm pretty sure it's a fault with Telkom and my local box. Basically around the beginning of December we had the phone lines in the area completely go off. No dial tone at all. We phoned Telkom and they said there was indeed a fault with the area. A few hours later it was back up. Now since then I've been having DNS issues. Basically once a day the DNS will completely stop working at the router level. No device can get on (PC, phone and so on). Restarting the router fixes it until the next morning. It seems to have this issue only after a long period of non-use.

Changing the DNS on the router to Google's DNS eventually runs into the same issue. I even tried to recreate ports on the Afri site. Same issue. Who do I contact to fix this? I assume you guys since you're maintaining my Telkom line.

This is a pretty unusual fault I've got to say. Usually a DNS issue like this will not resolve by restarting the router, unless the router itself is doing something I'm not quite sure I understand. If using different DNS servers gives the same issue, I'm more inclined to look at the router, unless everyone in the neighbourhood is experiencing the exact same symptoms. My experience with DNS is that it either works or doesn't work, it's very rarely intermittent unless the host cluster is intermittently failing or has a bad cluster that you intermittently hit between requests.

You know what. I have a second router I can test with. I'll get back to you in a week. Thanks.
