Afrihost Uncapped ADSL Feedback (Pt3)

i am in the eastern cape, in the daytime the internet are not bad at all its when the sun are switched off when most of the problems start

Daytime traffic is the main peak as far as the network goes on our side. We generally see a small spike between 6 and 8 I guess as people come home and do stuff, but by 10 the network starts getting pretty quiet. By midnight most users are unshaped.

I've got the same problem, just not quite as bad. I'm on 4mbps business. Everything not on the MTN network has exquisite ping. Afrihost is a bit behind on latency. Afrihost has been trying to provide support on this for me, but I really don't think that they're going to be able to reduce my ping too much, just because of the physical limitations of their network.

We're definitely nor experiencing a general latency problem that I can see, but the results you sent through are very weird. We'll need to possibly liaise with Telkom to see if this is specific to you area :(

Afripeeps can you please see what is going on with my line. I cannot authenticate any accounts since yesterday.

We seem to be seeing a few clients with this issue, but we can't see any sort of pattern around this. So far it seems like it could be a Telkom issue :(

Drop me a PM so I can check it out for you :(

Shaping cannot affect 2nd hop latency, and the theory is that it in fact keeps latency stable during high demand.

2nd hop latency means you are experiencing high pings before you leave Telkom's network, usually at the exchange.

The guest accounts can sometimes misreport throughput and latency, because they route differently to other ISP accounts (I believe they bypass IPC altogether and leave the BRAS on a different route to normal ISP accounts, including Telkom ISP accounts). That's my theory, based on the contrast we see sometimes in results :(

?????????????????????????????

Exchange are not the problem fact...

The latency on your hop to the Exchange is certainly contributing, the second hop should be below 20ms in most cases.

Could you send me your ADSL username via PM so that I can look into this.

wel 44ms are the lowet you will get het in Despatch because there are no fibre here.

There is definitely more than enough capacity available in the Eastern region.

I have reset your account itself, can you please restart the modem then test again.

The latency is still pretty high to the exchange :(

the latency have never changed to the exchange it always been like that before mtn got aboard never had an problem, the whole of December never had an problem, tested with an different isp i was able to play LOL. got me an capped account from you ppl and the testing are better so there are definitive an problem with your south uncapped product.

As a diagnostic, could you enable a Turbocharge session on your Uncapped account, then try a LoL session and see how the performance goes.

just tested LOL with the capped account ping are 300+ swoped to another ISP uncapped account and the Ping dropped to 210 and its playable so, something are up with your network or MTN's network..

FFS AFrihost.

For weeks I did not post a thing because everything was perfect. Now that shaping is active again and Mumble goes completely to hell...AGAIN!

WTF. This should not be rocket science. Your VOIP ports and protocols should be UNSHAPED! This in turn causes my games to lag! And no I don't care what you say that shaping cannot cause lag because when ONE service (Mumble) is being shaped it damn well effects my BF4.

And no - tracert's are perfect, no congestion on my exchange blah blah or any other excuse you come up with to deflect blame.

Yes I am pi$$ed off because this has been reported by myself months ago and it still bloody persists.

Fix for your damn network and give us what we pay for.

BF4 doesn't get affected for me and never has...I usually sit at around 19ms-40ms depending on the server. As for Mumble, never used it. Teamspeak though has never had an issue nor has Steam voip.

This why I said it's due to Mumble. When Mumble is closed I get fantastic pings of 9-35 to SA servers and the game runs perfect.

When shaping is active on the harshest level and I use Mumble - sorry, when I TRY to use Mumble (as it sounds like a 1990 dial up modem due to all the lost and late packets) - then it effects BF4 as it influences all traffic. Rubber banding abound and makes the game unplayable while talking to friends and teammates.

I'm not aware of any increased latency on the network last night. Did you see this increase reflected in any general tests?

We definitely don't shape Mumble. So if you are gaming and running Mumble, there should be no shaping acting on that traffic, even on a shaped profile. We've tested this on our side, but we'll definitely continue to test if more clients experiencing the same.

I'm assuming that, as previously, when you Turbocharge it goes away?

We have been shaping all along, just to a far lesser extent with decreased demand over the holidays.

Both TS and Mumble are classified as VoIP services so neither should be shaped at all.

Well I am sorry to inform you but you're wrong. Oh I know you've been shaping, as in the past when you shape and Mumble goes to hell I switch to WebAfrica to get perfect VOIP and game at the same time.
