Afrihost Uncapped ADSL Feedback (Pt3)

I'm really sorry Afriman but end of the month I am gone.

Multiple users are complaining about the same problem - packet loss - across all the account types; business, capped and uncapped on multiple titles. LoL, HoN, CS:GO. Battlefield 4 and SMITE in addition to VoiP protocol degradation on Mumble and TeamSpeak...and no one at Afrihost can replicate this? I don't know what to make of that. Dumbfounded actually.

I'm sorry that you have already made that decision. I have faith in our team and I know that if they have the information they need they can achieve a better experience for our clients.

As I mentioned earlier, we have to recreate exactly what you are experiencing. Perhaps we're not using all the mods that you're testing with or using different servers to game on, we have to try to understand what you are doing and then by process of elimination test until we can isolate the cause. If the only possible explanation after that is that it's our network, at least we'll have all the information that the network engineers will request in order to go ahead with changes on their side.

Here is the setup for replication;

NO other device connected to the network - at all.
NO program even started in the background that could possibly download or make calls other than the game being played.
Chat program closed.

There you go. Fire up BF4 and connect to ANY local SA server. The performance is the same. I don't run mods or anything else.

It's not my exchange or line - as my ping tests and the switch to another ISP which works fine confirms this.

So there ya go. All optimal settings for a test environment in which the only variable is the ISP account.

Have at it.

Will do.

Do note - this is in the evening when this is happening. During the day it's fine.

We'll try to test at the same time, it depends on when our team will be available. But we'll test at network peak to ensure we try to replicate your conditions.

Here is a speedtest today of my free Axxess account http://www.speedtest.net/my-result/4205175935 and a speed test today of my usual Afrihost account: http://www.speedtest.net/my-result/4205113612. Same problem as the others I have no even got the shaping policy happening when I look at clientzone,so if we getting shaped at night and day then when does the service work??? I have nothing running in the background,no downloads no devices, just my PC and whatever game I choose to play online whether it is Heroes of the storm, battlefield,LoL,WoW all pings are erratic and severe.

We run on the same network as Axxess so we would definitely have the same overseas capacity as Axxess. Seems like your ping is even better with us so we'll need to see why you're getting such a big difference in throughput. How did you test? Using passthrough or changing the router details? Can you show any further tests like our Network Test App?

Shaping Policy: 18.8% Download/ 6.25% P2P

When it says that, I have 350+ ping ....... when it doesn't show that or I use TC (which I will not be wasting on a test, no), it goes down to 295-315. Please tell me how that is not gaming traffic being shaped.

Our whole system is based on latency being consistent whether you are using a shaped or unshaped service on Uncapped. The only thing that could be affected is if you are running a torrent at the same time as you game, which sometimes improves in terms of latency when you turbocharge :(

Don't even have a torrent app installed, hate them. And when I game, everything get's shut down most of the time because I want to play unimpeded.

Yup I know that you guys are on the same network as them that is why I tried them to see if the throughput would be different and there is a massive difference as you can see! It is not possible to game comfortably with that type of throughput I will go through the same rage inducing process as I did last night then. I did a speed test of both as you can see and I changed router details like most people do I assume. I downloaded your network test app and have tested multiple times and the traceroute test part is taking forever to complete because the amount of time outs I am getting going to international.

It is sad state of affairs that Afrihost start shaping at 8pm, and are just haven't stopped shaping throughout the night. I tried to download some files after 12pm last night, but according to my download manager, the line was shaped throughout the night. I even checked Afrihost's client zone, and I was shaped at 18.8% Download/ 6.25% P2P at 6am this morning.

I would be fine with the shaping if my gaming pings were okay. I tested Counter-strike and World of Warcraft, and the pings are all over the place. Its not stable at all. And magically, all this disappears when I logged onto my Webafrica account (my backup).

I've even noticed that my speeds when my account isn't shaped as very poor since Sunday. I am on a 4-meg line, and I could do 420KB/s easily, but now I struggle to do 2 to 3 megs, while I get 424KB/s on my backup Webafrica account on the exact some content.

Is there something majorly wrong with Afrihost? Is one of your overseas pipes down? Is there some new rules we need to know about the network? When can I expect to be unshaped?

You definitely shouldn't get this kind of timeout on your tests, and it's really seeming to appear all over the place. Are you testing under the same conditions or using passthrough or something like that?

Is there any way you can test with a capped account under the same conditions?

already done multiple times ....... when I login with AH and it's 350+, I'll usually use one of my capped accounts right away and it's 260+ instantly with them.

Remember that we generally see two peak periods. Obviously at 8am most businesses go online and we see a marked increase in traffic which generally stabilises for the day. We also see a huge increase from about 6pm, which is when people arrive home and start using their downloads, streaming etc. But over weekends it should be a lot more chilled, we've almost never seen demand hit peak on a Saturday or Sunday :(

I have tested under the same conditions every time,no new devices connected nothing downloading,no P2P interference. I just speedtested a WebAfrica account and it gives full speed and perfect pings to London and to local JHB where as Afrihost has still not changed a bit from this morning, slow as hell with no improvements. It seems like many people are experiencing problems with Afrihost recently. Is it maybe because they are running at full capacity, there are network problems somewhere affecting the whole network etc? It seems like many people have noted that this has been since the deal with MTN. I used to believe Afrihost was very transparent and always gave truthful answers if there were any issues or downtime, but now it seems people are getting the same copy paste replies that other ISPs would give, and this is going to make many people change from Afrihost. I know most people would just like to know that their problem has been acknowledged and that they know it is an issue, and that they are doing something about it, NOT saying that it shouldn't be an issue and that it is unusual. Knowing that the problem is being fixed or attended to would ensure that people are patient, but not getting any information will just result in people changing to another ISP. I hope this changes, as I believe Afrihost was the best.

I too am experiencing issues. My NZBs have now crawled to halt. Lucky to get 3Kb\s. At first I thought it was shaping, so I tried the turbo charge service on the CZ, which did nothing to alleviate the situation. Its now after peak hours and still the same. At this rate I may have to reconsider my ISP choices, sadly. :(

There are no capacity issues from our end :)
