Afrihost Uncapped ADSL Feedback (Pt3)

I definitely get the feeling Afrihost has changed over to shaping based on usage (rather than when the network demand is high). I've also been shaped non stop for 2 days, yet it seems other people haven't been getting shaped at all.

I wonder what the threshold has been set to? My projected usage is sitting at 240gigs this month... so maybe its 200 or 150?

We're definitely still using the same model for shaping that we've used for the past few years, shaping based on network demand.

Then why have I been shaped for the past two days non-stop? Even after I activated the turbocharge service, nothing changed. This morning I try a new download, same story - 2 to 4kb/s.

If you guys check cinx and jinx logs you'll see a massive spike in demand due to ios and ms updates released at the same time. Started on Tuesday. ;)

Morning Guys!

Would everyone that has posted about the heavy shaping please post which Region you are in. It seems like most of you are in the South, but I just need some confirmation. Thanks!

Pretoria.

Turbocharge should definitely have resulted in your download speeds picking up, if you saw no noticeable benefit, can you please send me your ADSL username, I would like to make sure we credit you back for those Turbocharge minutes.

I have the same issue. And I log into a different ISP account to do some tests, and I get full line speed on the same files. So it can't be my exchange, my line or my settings.

The worst part is that it doesn't seem to be effecting everybody, so we will probably get little to no traction with this issue :/

Noted. But that should not cause such issues of this scale on AH's network. Now that I think about it, my connection has been slow for most of this week actually. Very keen to try CW out tonight. DJ... PM Sent

Sorry Tander. Didn't mean to bring up CW in here. Was posting in my personal capacity. Can you PM the CW rep account instead for CW queries? Apologies Afriblokes...

If that is what is bringing the network down, then Apple updates need to be shaped to something like 10kb/s.

The last time a Apple update was blamed for the shaping it took Afrihost 2 months to get back to normal.

Thanks for the offer, but I didn't even know Turbocharge was a service AH offered until I was advised to try it out. Don't care much for the minutes wasted on the service. It doesn't work anyway, so it's pointless using it. ;)

Point exactly. Why does Apple updates bring down the network like this (If that's the actual cause) shouldn't Afrihost have a plan for this? Lastly, I occur with shaping the updates in future.

No worries Dude!

That's why I was specifically asking which region you are in, I think we may be shaping a bit more aggressively than we have to in the South, and I just wanted an indication of how widespread the affect was. :)

The issue with the updates it that the updates are cached only on one CDN in South Africa, and if that is being hammered, the updates are pulled from overseas.

On Tuesday there were simultaneous updates for iOS, OSX AND the XboxOne. I think this may be why the shaping was a bit more aggressive to make sure that we don't have any issues like last time.

So your solution to prevent slow internet connection, is to shape everyone until they have a slow internet connection.

I don't get how shaping people to the point where they get 160ms ping on Local teamspeak servers, nevermind international services, are helping us.
My ping has been so erratic for the last couple of days that it is a challenge to do anything online other than browsing.

The shaping will only ever affect your P2P and HTTP downloads, the fact that your local ping and Teamspeak is slow, means that something else is affecting the performance of your ADSL connection.

How is your ADSL performance at the moment? Could you post a speedtest quickly, that should give a basic indication where things are going wrong.

YouTube slugging, gaming poked, downloads at zero ..... just all round same BS

No problems with anything, all running smooth at full line speed.

Like I keep saying, I know downloads will be shaped, all networks do that but why is streaming and gaming being shaped too ffs. And plese, judging by many many comments, it is being shaped, no matter how much you guys say it's supposedly not.

At work at the moment so won't be able to test till tonight.

My ping is fine until the shaping starts. Ping goes up from about 40 to 70-90 when the shaping kicks in. Last night it was averaging at about 149.

Hmmmm, then something funky is definitely happening, if you notice it again, can you please let myself or AfriGuy know ASAP so that we can check to see exactly what is happening on your account.

I gave Afri another go after they fixed all their network issues. Randomly crappy slow speed on any protocol at any time of the day.

I test another ISP's account and everything is perfect and fast. Switch back to Afri and it's crawling again. Point is, my line is perfect, so it has to be the ISP. I shouldn't be shaped either, my estimated use for this month on my 4mb uncapped is 138gb, that should be very acceptable...

Blaming the poor speeds on updates is just useless.

I am glad that my account with Afri is in a canceled state as of the end of this month :)
