Afrihost Uncapped ADSL Feedback

Sorry to say, but AfriHost won't be a premium ADSL network with no IPC in Cape Town. Like I've said previously, you will have a bunch of unhappy clients because you guys omitted to tell Joe public that their pings and routes are going to be screwed if you live in Western Cape.

Good luck with assuming people are happy with "stable" pings ( Maybe for games like Peggle )

Not bashing AfriHost, but you guys need to sort out the IPC issue. There is no point in saying we have this massive amount of bandwidth, but we can't even give you guys what you had before moving over to a new network. This just doesn't make sense, and reeks of poor planning.

As I said, in 14 days we've achieved a lot, and we'll keep getting CLOSER to our goal. The big ISP's weren't great overnight, they refined their network over years and added capacity over that time. For a brand new network to be deployed and performing at this level over a fortnight, I think it's a pretty awesome achievement. I also think there are quite a few Cape Town users who are happy, and it may not be fair to make a general statement that Cape Town as a region has been unfairly prejudiced. At the end of the day it's about swings and roundabouts - as my old Law lecturer used to say. We could have tried to deploy everything at once and risk a national network instability issue. We determined the better risk was a phased rollout starting in Gauteng (where we could quickly and effectively act on reported issues), and then phasing in more capacity. If you review the complaints from the initial go live date to now, it's clear that we are getting closer and closer to this even without the planned IPC rollout. We have a specific focus on the Cape Town issues, and I believe we are getting closer to mitigating and relieving those issues as we go along.

Like I said, that's all great. But the general public doesn't care about how great the new network is, or how much work went into it.
They are paying for a service and if said service used to give 25ms pings to CPT from CPT and 180ms ping from CPT to EU, why must it all of sudden go down the drain?

Joe public isn't technically inclined like most people here on MyBB. You guys have build a great network it seems ( speeds are impressive ) , but the bitter pill would have been easier swallowed if you guys told the Cape Town people up front that there were going to be issues regarding routes and pings.

No matter what routing you guys are implementing in the next 14 days, it will not be as fast as having the IPC directly in Cape Town

and it may not be fair to make a general statement that Cape Town as a region has been unfairly prejudiced.

It is in fact very easy to to make that general statement if you admitted there is no IPC or planned IPC for Cape Town this year. No amount of work arounds or routes will fix the fact that there is no IPC.

AfriMan don't feel bad, WebAfrica which bills themselves as a leading ISP in the country still only has IPC in CPT after 15 years...

Afrihost can peer to CINX without cape town IPC... ?

While I share your frustration the general public doesn't care about pings. In fact some might argue that it is only the gaming community that place a high priority on pings on account of the impact it has on gaming.

Agreed, I don't even know why I'm trying. One thing impacted for sure by bad pings is Skype. Anyway, seems like I'm pissing against the wind here and as usual in S.A. it's just shut up and eat it ...

^ While i do agree with your frustrations about pings before vs current.. as i am a avid gamer with Dota 2 and BF3
but really, you expecting a little to much here at this point in time, Afrihost has been on the MTN network for 2 weeks as mentioned.

I think just step back and actually just give a thought on how much time and effort and overtime has been put into this migration, we are all human and have families and friends, i work in the IT world, hell im even busy doing a migration of my own for AECI and their group of companies. im frustrated beyond imagination..

But i guess i have a common ground in this field and understand that a great network and IT environment was not built in a day, and definitely not in 14 days either.

We are now going into November, then its 2 months and we into a new year.. sign up with another ISP for the time being back on the IS backbone and it will be happy days for you...

Then leave :)

It's taken me nearly 10 min to load half of a 6 min YouTube video! Mtn network not running so grand for me at the moment. On IS I was averaging 435KB/s on a 4Mbps line, in the last week on Mtn I've been averaging 360KB/s.

Same here, have to buff the life out of any You Tube video before it is watchable. So frustrating.

Been getting very high ping and very low download speeds the last day or so.
I am supposed to be on an uncapped 2Mbps line.

Local test
Download Speed: 451 kbps (56.4 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 292 kbps (36.5 KB/sec transfer rate)
Latency: 501 ms

International test
Download Speed: 918 kbps (114.8 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 308 kbps (38.5 KB/sec transfer rate)
Latency: 594 ms

Afriman ease explain to us why YouTube is so crap on the new network? When are all these little problem going to be sorted out??? I can't keep paying full price for ****ty Internet

Have you tried Axxess? Youtube streams without buffering. And yes I know Afrihost purchased a majority share in Axxess but as far as I have seen they both run different systems when it comes to "shaping" users etc. We have an account with both companies at work and the Axxess one always out preforms the Afrihost one.

Well that is my experience with the 2 accounts (Companies). But don't take my work for it. Try it out yourself!

Youtube very slow as well as CNN videos.

Im in Durban and speedtest.net automatically choses the MTN JHB server. To this I get 29ms ping and 3.49Mbps up speed. When I manually select the Durban MTN server ping jumps to 42ms and up speed improves slightly to 3.51Mbps.

Why would the ping be worse to a closer location?

Just watched 2 videos from http://edition.cnn.com/video/ without buffering on Axxess. And that is after I have downloaded over 400GB this month. Using a 5Mbps Uncapped account from Axxess since that's all my ADSL will support. Thanks Telkom

No problem with those videos on my 2Mbps uncapped Afrihost account. Did have some issues with some sites not loading all their images, seemed like a proxy issue.
