Afrihost Uncapped ADSL Feedback

Comparing to my speeds earlier today. This is what I get now. After 18:00.

Local:

Test conducted on Mon Jul 30 2012 18:02:11 GMT+0200 (South Africa Standard Time)

Download Speed: 8331 kbps (1041.4 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 849 kbps (106.1 KB/sec transfer rate)
Latency: 35 ms

International:

Test conducted on Mon Jul 30 2012 18:03:27 GMT+0200 (South Africa Standard Time)

Download Speed: 5746 kbps (718.3 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 823 kbps (102.9 KB/sec transfer rate)
Latency: 164 ms

It does look like speeds are throttled between business hours.

I was with Openweb and cancelled my account because I was having the exact same speed problem. What I cant understand is that when I did speed tests on the Openweb line, speedtest.net said that my provider was Internet Solutions. Then, after I switched to AfriHost, I went to speedtest.net and it said my provider was still Internet Solutions and that my IP address was still the exact same one I had when I was with Openweb.

Do AfriHost resell bandwidth from Internet Solutions and could it be Internet Solutions that are throttling me?

The reason why I want to know if this is going to be a problem is because I want to decide between then 10mb and 4mb Uncapped. It doesn't help me to get the 10mb uncapped if I'm only going to get 5mb speeds. But then again, what if I get 1mb speeds on the 4mb line???
 
I'm thinking of switching to Afrihost all inclusive 4mb package. Is there anyone using Afrihost that can post their average speeds and usage per day. I specifically want to hear from the guys who do on average more than 10GB per day. Is this even possible with these accounts?

How is gaming on these accounts? I play most of my games on EU servers, is it good or even playable?
 
After reading the last few pages in this thread and the Openweb thread, it seems that being on the IS backbone is the reason why I'm getting such slow speeds. The reason I use two different providers is because I want backup if one goes down... but with such slow speeds, it's worth the risk to just go with MWEB on the second line and be done with it.

EDIT: My usage isn't even all that high... it's currently around 5-6GB per day
 
Just signed up to the uncapped 10MB offering and first impression is seriously underwhelming.Usenet currently running at 300KB/s and Netflix is a bit of a blur even when nothing else is running

Hey Afriman, your advice is needed.

I am interested in getting the R697 4mb package (all inclusive) as soon as can be done. I have a few questions, but firstly here is my situation:

Line: Telkom 1mb
Data: Mweb 1mb

I can cancel my Mweb today or tomorrow so that I leave them at the end of next month, which would mean the switch to you guys would have to happen in late August. Here are my Q's:

1. How reliable is the IS backbone? I had a bad experience with Openweb standard uncapped and am a little hesitant lest it turns out to be just as bad (poor pings, random websites not loading etc.).

2. I do a lot of gaming to EU and US servers (my priority is EU). Can you do a pingtest to bbc.co.uk on this package for me? I currently get 160ms with Mweb.

3. If you introduce a 2mb package I may go for this instead. How easy is it to downgrade from 4mb all inclusive to 2mb all inclusive?

4. Finally, When and how would I transfer my line to you so as to be in my best interest?

Sorry for the long post but I'm not really sure where to go now that Mweb have revealed their 2mb offering (it's just too expensive to justify when I could pay R30 more for 4mb!).

Hi there

Lots of questions, but I'm always happy to answer :)

1. The IS backbone is one of the largest networks in the country. It is pretty solid!
2. Ping times to EU are dependant on your line latencies and the speed of your connection, but generally users have reported below 300msecs.
3. We are really hoping to release some new product info VERY soon, and upgrading or downgrading is pretty easy in the clientzone.
4. You can transfer your line at any time, and as long as your transfer is signed up (not necessarily completed) you'll be able to opt for a bundle. Just sign up online, we'll do all the paperwork with Telkom.

We do also run on the IS backbone, but IS configure the bandwidth "pipe" differently according to the ISP requests and service tier.

Please send me a PM so we can run some more tests and figure out what the issue might be.

I can offer you special birthday discount on your first month (August). This is the next best thing. If you're not happy, you can always cancel before the 25th of the month to avoid being billed in full the following month.

So far very happy with the performance on a 4MB uncapped. Not to mention the support from AfriMan has been epic. :)
 
Almost pulling 60Gb's now... :o

No ways I'm gonna justify in downloading 60Gb's a month - won't have HDD space to put all the downloads... :o
 
Afriman, so when you launching your 2mb packages (all inclusive).
Putting off until i see whats being offered by everyone. Your 4mb all inclusive package looks real good value for money & i dont really do more than 200-300GB / month sometimes even less.
