I see some latency spikes around 8pm last night, and also around 8 this morning, but otherwise things should be smooth sailing today. Is this the general feel?

Anyway, in light of tuesday's issue, we've got the network guys here working on things, to make sure all is stable and working nicely.

I'm less throttled today than on average, but still it took me 2 minutes and 24 seconds to download a 17.85MB video from youtube at an average rate of 69.14kB/s. A bit earlier I managed a 200MB ISO file at 106kB/s. So yes, better than average, but still not quite where it should be.

I'm getting a bit "p1ssed 0ff" now...

BF3 just released some massive updates. One was 1.8GB and the second expansion is 1.6GB. First one was a breeze, but now the second one is crawling along at 28 - 30KB/s. Says 11 hours to go. And that is through Internet Download Manager with 16 sessions.

I'm ready to bail.... F... this ****...

That didn't last very long. My speeds have now dropped to 128kbps, 1/16th of 2Mbps.

Definitely not smooth sailing my side! Speeds are up to kuk again today. I should never get that speed on a 4Mbps line even with throttling!

Afriman, why not just go back to the same way you ran your accounts on IS? MTN is meant to have more capacity so what's the problem? Clearly this real time throttling (QoS) BS isn't working!

What pisses me off the most is that the website says network is fully operational when clearly its not.

Update: 4 minutes after 17:00 line is back to normal! This is pathetic

wooooooo i can now download at 40% of my line speed! lets hope it lasts at least for the next hour

The extra bandwidth that Afrihost is now apparently moving, have they taken into account all the users receiving line upgrades i wonder.

Here is the usage on my 1mb account , as you can see its very up and down, these last few days ive had to switch over to another account because its basically been unusable.

Edit : Oh and Afriman your new clientzone has the wrong numbers for gigs used ... Its says 2gb and 2gb.

You (MTN/Afrihost) don't have enough bandwidth!!!!! (Even capped account and Axxess users are complaining)

Except the people with exchange issues and don't know it and blame you, the rest of us who get perfect line performance with other ISP's, are getting between 1/16th to 1/4 download speed 18 hours of the day.

Now, instead of you coming out and saying: sorry, we made a miscalculation but we don't have enough Jhb IPC capacity and give an X date of when you planning an upgrade, (everyone chuckles and thinks "noobs" but will be forgiven, at least you being honest) you resort to political answers and apologies and give EVERYONE a pointless runaround. This is why I have cancelled and you won't be missed, it will take something extremely special to lure me back.

I'm still keeping my 2GB R39 wifi capped account and still have my 4Mb line with you, I like the "Fix My Line" and "Test My Line" tools even tho the test doesn't work anymore, stopped working I think while you were still with IS about 2 months back, it just does nothing, it says 3 mins but you can leave it and watch a movie and it still hasn't finished.

My prediction of the situation is that they know they have to get Dbn and CT IPC capacity which will take the load off Jhb eventually so they not bothering in upgrading any capacity as it stands now, well maybe a little but not nearly enough, and this is only happening in February!

Use It / Don't Use It

Thank you it is clear, Afrihost needs to sacrifice their Cape Town and Durban clients for the sake of their Gauteng customers. I think it is a fair call and thus call on all frustrated Gauteng Afrihost customers to +1 this post. Thank you.

I think this is the biggest issue atm. A lack of transparency. A week back I asked whether the current shaping/throttling policy is permanent or temporary. Multiple people +1'ed the question, yet no answer was given. Only thing that ever happens is they make promises that they're trying their best and throwing spare capacity at downloads whenever possible.

Guys there is no sacrificing of clients needs, and we are looking at getting more capacity. But here's the truth. When we moved to MTN we had more IPC capacity than we had on IS. We moved the same client base over, and bandwidth usage was a helluva lot more than we had anticipated. Why? Maybe Telkom upgrades, maybe because we left accounts unshaped for too long, maybe because the message went out for downloaders to have a free for all. It's impossible to say. As to political answers, I'm not really sure what that means. I've always tried to be straight, tell you what we're thinking and where we're coming from as a company. Reality is a we have a challenge in front of us, and we are doing the best we can. User download behaviour has changed - could we have seen this coming? I'm not sure but maybe we could have. At any rate, we're doing everything we can to deliver the best possible service and give everyone a fair shake.

We placed orders for more IPC capacity months ago, for local capacity in CT and DBN, to compliment what we already have in Gauteng. This will give us more flexibility in managing bandwidth and give us the opportunity to allow more access to bandwidth for downloading. Reality is that this may only arrive in Feb (or later), due to Telkom infrastructure limitations. We simply cannot move any faster on this. What we are doing is also planning major infrastructure changes on MTN's network to handle the additional capacity, so that are no backhaul issues when Telkom gets their side sorted. Literally millions have and will be spent on getting things to where they should be.

AfriMan, please just answer me this - I'll try to state it simply:

I've now twice asked whether we can reasonably expect our lines to perform as they used to during daytime on IS, assuming that one had not exceeded the rolling threshold. In other words, will I ever again be able to quickly grab a torrent during daytime at close to line speed, or must I resign myself to the fact that that particular ship has sailed on Afrihost's network? Never mind just torrents, will I ever again be able to watch a 720p vid on Youtube without buffering?

I am not a heavy downloader - perhaps I'd technically be better served with a capped account - but I like knowing I don't have to sit watching bits 'n bytes 24/7. However, if that means that I'll get vastly sub-par usage during daylight hours then perhaps your product is no longer a good match for my [-]wants[/-] needs.

So, intended daylight performance? Or unintended consequence of matters being addressed in the background?

Are you still taking sign-ups for uncapped at the moment? If capped users are having issues then it indicates that something is seriously haywire and it would be logical to halt uncapped sign-ups for the time being, seeing as you're waiting for additional IPC capacity to stabilize the network.

It will always be capacity dependant. At the moment, I'd say it's pretty unlikely, though today torrents speeds were generally good from what I could see. We're also looking at restricting the heaviest downloaders even more, meaning lighter users should be less restricted.

Once new capacity comes online, things should be be a lot different. We're still going to have the same policies in place, but with ample capacity, the effect should be negligible.
