Be careful in case you do get a test account. What I gather from the feedback from others who have had a test account, and from my own experience on a 'special' account this weekend, test accounts _do not_ have the throttling enabled that regular accounts do.

Exactly my point... My account runs at 1/16th speed after 0 bytes. I get 16kB/s. You get 62kB/s, and only after you've already fetched 54GB in one single weekend.

Edit: To reiterate, I remember your posts a couple of pages back where you were saying you got full line speed where everyone else was struggling with severely throttled lines. You got full line speed up to the point where you hit 50 or so GB. Everyone else gets severely throttled from the very first byte.

That's insane!! I'm on 10mb though.

I have a 10mb uncapped account with Axxess as well, also throttled to around 60KB/s but I've only done 1gb on that account so far this month.

Haven't used either of these accounts since yesterday. My default account is a 10mb uncapped Cybersmart account and it's chalk and cheese.

We don't have any such thing as a test account. When you sign up on a referral link or straight on our website, you get the same account as everyone else. We analyse the usage pattern, that's is generally why clients get treated differently. How and when your usage is tracked, and using what download signatures / protocols.
 
Downloading PDF split and Merge (18.7MB) from Sourceforge at 7.6 KB/sec on a 1MB line.

@AfriMan, I understand the dynamic shaping policy thats been put in place on MTN as explained way back in the thread, but is it normal to be throttled down during business hours to 30kB/s on a 4Mb account?

Was getting full speed until about 8, just seems a bit extreme to go all the way from ~420kB/s to ~30kB/s O_O

It depends on the how the priority management system is treating you, based on your historic usage pattern. If it's a torrent, it could we be getting very lowest priority on the network.

That would be 1/16th of your account speed, which is consistent with my experience. My internet connection has recently been down for 4 days due to Telkom and then I just spent this weekend on a 'special' account from Afrihost, and besides that I've been trying my best to keep my traffic volume as low as possible the past few weeks, so I very much doubt that this throttling is usage based at all.

Despite what Afriman is implying about it only being torrents, expect everything that isn't Youtube or HTML to run that slow.
 
@Afriman Please get the guys working on your QoS system of add an exception for the adobe download servers. Downloading a file at 500 bytes is just unacceptable.
 
So if you download torrents more, then torrents gets lower priority? If you download via http more, then http gets lower priority?

I'm downloading through newsgroups, my total usage is less than the threshold, so are you saying this is the norm then and I can expect it to operate this way from now on? What time can I expect my speed to return to normal?

Have to commend the guys on keeping the latency consistent, have been around the 235ms mark on average since 01/12 , so minimal effect on gaming and keeps me going (still just waiting for the IPC).. just the international download speed now... today is the 1st day in weeks that I have had sucha good score as below.. whereas local is well flying..

Test conducted on 04 December 2012 11:47
Download Speed: 1480 kbps (185 KB/sec transfer rate) vs. LOCAL: Download Speed: 3915 kbps (489.4 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 425 kbps (53.1 KB/sec transfer rate)
Latency: 232 ms

So it has gone back to usage , this is good it probably explains why my speeds have improved recently.
 
They have apparently ordered more bandwidth from Telkom which is being provisioned. Lets hope this helps. Also no idea when it will be implemented.

Since the links are most likely congesting every night and then they shape something crazy to try and bring the traffic down, BUT I have seen HTTP slow down and YouTube also get shaped something crazy. Not sure if their local caches of YouTube is maybe at limit...

Can only speculate since they probably won't give most of this info out to the public.

I believe the upgrade on capacity was answered earlier in the thread , the answer is about February if im not mistaken.
