Afrihost Uncapped ADSL Feedback

4mbps uncapped and I'm getting 0.58mbps. Ping is better though

You have it good! SARCASM :) I am running at 0.39 on a 10mb/s account at the moment - traceroutes fine, latency 26ms from PE.
Everything deteriorated into the evening - when I got home I was running at 7.6mb/s (5:30pm) up until around 8pm and then poof - speed gone.

Whats up with all the ISP"S giving hassles lately. Mweb, telkomsa, webafrica... seems it's all related. Me thinks there is a conspiracy.... lol.

Something is really broken in the evenings. Got home just after 16h00, and it was plain sailing. It's now almost 23:00. 50kb/s from Youtube. High pings. SpeedTest fails to load. Telkom and/or AH.

HTTP downloads are worse than ever, i now get 17kB/s all day long. Used to jump to full line speed after 11pm.

Im on a 10meg business line and am getting around 3 meg international also. The results fluctuate from 2-4 randomly it seems. Im hoping it will just improve.

Ok, its 8AM and there goes my AH Business Account again like a madly shaped and throttled account down the drain, useless. AfriMan, whats the status? When will the CT throughput be fixed? Or is this unrelated?

I was still working around 2am and was getting full line speed, i thought they have fixed the issues, but doing a test now shows same results than yesterday, fluctuating between 1-4mbps.

I guess getting full speed during non peak is likely easier? Business lines are a pretty poor offering from AH at the moment.

We are very much focussed on the throughput issue on the Cape Town IPC. We do not believe this is a capacity issue, we think it's more likely related to shaping, as we seems to be getting inconsistent results. This may seem similar from the user perspective, but similarly to how we've shaped our Joburg IPC. We're working with MTN to review the shaping rules, as well as testing the management servers to make sure they are working correctly.

So if you live outside CT does this above text mean that once the CT IPC has had the shaping rules altered, all users across the country will "go faster"? I just want the straight talk here. What you wrote above can be interpreted in more than one way.

I'm very happy with the upgrade to the new IPC, getting the service I should have gotten the last few months.

Now I do accept that a disturbance in the force can happen every now and again, but if this service starts to degrade in any way then I will move onto another ISP.

Thx AfriMan, eagerly awaiting the resolution. And good luck to you and the teams (AH and MTN) in have this resolved.

So, erm, Afriman... should I be concerned that the invoice I received this morning in preparation of the next billing run doesn't reflect any discount on it?

Heya Afrihost,

I do understand the fact that you guys will be working around the clock, and burning the midnight oil to try get this issue resolved. It's also not always the best when working with backhaul suppliers, although at this point im sure everyone is working as hard as they can. I know what the pressure and can be like trying to get issues like this resolved.

Would it be possible to put up a public notification on http://www.afrihost.com/site/network_status ?

Sorry to be a nuisance. :-)

Regards
Malooga

Help me out here, because I'm still pretty new to this whole ADSL thing(y) and I'm still learning all the technical jargon and so on. So maybe I'm missing something, but why is it that it seems that Afrihost is the only ISP that's shaping it's customers so heavily when it is not a capacity issue.
