Afrihost Uncapped ADSL Feedback

I've just given mweb my 1 month notice.
looking to go with Afrihost.

Does afrihost give priority to gaming traffic?
How is the overall experience on Afrihost.

I am going to go onto their 4mb package.
How much can you guys download per month on a 4mb?

I wouldn't be able to recommend Afrihost any more & after using since mid last year, I'll be switching next month.
I've had nearly non-stop issues since January. Tech support has been completely unhelpful, with them closing the ticket after every reply. Afriman at least has been great.
This is the final straw - I thought my crap speeds were because of Seacom being down, but checking in Clientzone this morning I see I was being shaped at 50%- with an average daily use of 350MB (~11GB a month)! At least I'm now back up to 75% speed, but this is still unacceptable.

Man, stay away from Afrihost.

That's just you though. Every ISP has people having issues. I switched to Afrihost not much more than a week ago and it's been great. Pay a bit more for the business account. Same price as Mweb Premium.

It's not just me. Look back through the message boards - Afrihost has caught a lot of flak since the move to MTN.
Regardless, if it's just me, is Afrihost waging a personal vendetta against me that I'm being shaped so badly? I doubt it.

Granted, Afrihost had its issues in the past, but they are running as smooth as butter now :)
Awesome speeds on uncapped.

For some weird reason, I also cannot connect to Google from my home 1MB Afrihost DSL, but it's working happily at work which is using a 4MB Afrihost line.

Edit: I've tried using Afrihost, SAIX & Google's own DNS servers.

I'll accept it might just be me, but why?

(If I can figure out how, I'll post a screenshot from my Clientzone)
It would seem I don't have permission to post attachments...

I don't know what your guys problem is no shaping on my line even when the monthly usage was as high as 110GB, perhaps you should upgrade your package.

I do agree there is a lack in customer service upon dealing with customer tickets logged and closing them after attempting resolutions without confirmation. This drives me up the walls.

Overall when the authentication services do work their uncapped product is good.

4Mbps Uncapped ADSL
Account Status: Account Active
Shaping Policy: No Shaping Applied
Data Used: 1.37 GB
Average Daily Usage: 703.44 MB
Average Monthly Usage: 46.90 MB

I am on 10Mbps bundle, done 11 GB which I think is not too much for 10Mbps uncapped, Averaging 10GB a day

If I look at all the people complaining about their ISP's and some jumping ship to Afrihost...Am I glad I'm at the right place. Yes, they're not perfect, yes, they make mistakes, but hey, what system in the world is perfect? As a developer, I know that any system will have bugs, no matter how experienced the team may be who implemented it...it's just a matter of fixing it when it eventually pops up. :p

So well done Afrihost, thanks for always keeping us up-to-date with issues that pop up, even if it's out of your control.

It's not just you dude - if anyone had to flip through the pages (just a few and read the comments) you would see there are a lot of people with exactly the same issues with the shaping being very aggressive (some only get 5% on their lines it looks like). Afrihost do close tickets right after chatting to you. I have quite a few emails in the past where people (from Afrihost have replied to my emails) and it was not resolved and closed - 3 people down the line you get it solved. So it is not just you.

Yup, we all have shaping on downloads now and then, currently there are issues with SEACOM still. Last week I was down to 10% during the day, and sometimes 25% - in the evening shaping is relaxed to 75% and more. During the day one can understand the shaping policy for us "normals" with Home Uncapped products - Business Uncapped gets preference during the day.
As for the realtime services like video streaming, web, etc, they have been absolutely perfect :)

I am going to have a full go @ the afrihost support staff, for this 5% shaping I am receiving.

I understand we all have shaping, but Afrihost's AUP states "Non-real time services will be shaped on a sliding scale, with our higher bandwidth users getting shaped more than lower bandwidth users" Given my usage is showing 700MB & there are folks downloading 10x that per day (look at the leaderboards - 1st on 1MB uncapped is supposedly 329.98 GB per month! *) why the heck am I being shaped at all, let alone 25-50%?

*Even if they're using GiB, not GB, that works out to a massive 10644MB/day (443.5MB per hour). How the buggery is that possible for these guys if I struggle to get Nvidia drivers of 230MB downloaded in 30 min & my usage is a fraction of theirs?
EDIT - I tell a lie. Downloading the newest drivers from Geforce.com (170MB) my est time to finish is 1.5hours (33kbps, nothing else running).
If anyone knows a local site with stuff worth downloading I'm happy to test, to eliminate Seacom/international throughput as a cause.

Question here:

In the next couple of months I'm going to be cancelling DSTV and buying a media streamer for Nextflix / Hulu+. I'm looking at the 10Mbps uncapped bundle from Afrihost. I just want to know if this type of streaming will be regarded as real time or P2P (I have no idea what protocols they use) and if the 10Mbps uncapped account will be right for this.

I'm not looking to download terabytes of data per month but do want to be able to stream without any buffering due to shaping.

I'll admit, all this 5% throttling is making me a little bit nervous.

Thanks!

My experience on the shaping is it is highly dynamic. I watched it a bit on Saturday and in the space of 2 hours I had 5 different statuses. From 5%, 25, 50, 75 and no shaping :) In 2 hours....

BTW: I wasn't doing any downloading or realtime during this period. Just checking the Afrihost website every 15 minutes or so

Doesn't affect me though as I P2P and torrent maybe once a month. Realtime is perfect including VoIP which I do a lot.

Real time, I am using it for Netflix
