Shaping or throttling would imply that there's an active policy or rate limiting monitor in place - which is not the case, otherwise some users would not be able to report full speeds as they have. It's more likely to be congestion at various points in the network, DSLAM - IPC - IS Network - Afrihost Network. That why we need to look at each case individually to determine what the common factors are so we can put some coping measures in place.
 
I have had about 5 different emails to and from Afrihost customer support, to no avail.

My uncapped international speeds are terrible during the day! We are talking 1.5mb on a 4mb line... I have sent them traceroutes and speed tests to prove that it is not my DSLAM - I get full (10mb!) speed when I use my capped account, but when my uncapped is on then the problem arises.

I need to get this fixed if I am to keep subscribing - it simply isn't worth it - I may as well downgrade to 2mb.

I have only used 20Gb so far this month, and last month I only did about 45Gb, so I am not being throttled.

Please help :(

Guys I've just about had it with Openweb, and having to change my account credentials every time I report an issue. It's a bit difficult to go through all the replies in this thread at the moment to look for the answers, so your responses would be appreciated :)

Some questions I have:
- What is the general experience with the uncapped accounts at this point in time? From the last few pages it seems like there are issues during office hours, which shouldn't be the case if they use a throttling policy.
- What is the approximate threshold for a 2 Mbps account? I don't need more than 200GB per month.
- How does it perform for gaming, more specifically Xbox Live?
 
I am on 2mb Cape town, and came from openweb gold ,can honestly say ,thusfar I dont regret the move .Usenet is constant ,full line speed ,torrents is not that bad ,have done torrents with well over 150Kbs during daytime aswell .

Ping is most of the time +-50ms
And thanks Afriman ,saved quirte a bit of moola the past two months.:whistle:

@ Mike .Have not gone on xbox live yet ,will try and go online in the next day or so ,or as soon as I have time and report back ,any game specific.Dont know how it works yet.

I don't think the 2mbps threshold is public knowledge atm - but I reckon 200gb is going to be an issue. Thats like 40% downloading, so thats not going to win you any friends at AH.
 
My 4Mbit uncapped has been on a slow-go for the last day or so.

Right now torrents are pretty much dead (>50KBps in total from well seeded torrents) and I can't get over 100KBps from FTP's like AMD, nVidia, IS and WAGE.

Streaming YouTube is also a pain.

I have a 4mb uncapped account and it is excellent for gaming on Xbox Live.

My ping to JHB gos as low as 16ms and I am about 150km from there.

I have noticed something on this account. When I play Diablo while downloading, the ping stays at 200-250ms. Also with MW3 and BF3 its the same. On MW3 I generally pull host and that is while downloading. And bf3 is constant 4 bars.

I am a happy camper with my account...
 
Damm its been bad from Somerset West torrent is slow as hell :(.I got a spare plugg account and that is flying ? so now what i dunno man something aint right .I was getting 195 ms too world of tanks a week ago and now 250ms ?so what changed ?
 
Well MWeb is broken. Some people in that thread also said their Afrihost accounts are also dead. Mine isn't dead per se, just very slow.

I know there was some problem with international cables yesterday which affected other major ISP's. If their redundancy falls over to the same cable being used by us (e.g. Seacom) then there could be an effect.

Hence we are really excited about the move to MTN's network, which has capacity on multiple overseas cable, so even the redundancies have redundancies!! More options means better service, better speeds even when the fit hits the shan!

So does this mean that my speeds will improve soon? My local uncapped speeds have also "hit the shan" :(

All my capped account downloading is fine...
 
I am also having problems! Was up until 03:00 this morning and I could not load YouTube videos at all and been checking my speeds throughout the day and been constantly slow!

I am on a 2mb uncapped account and should be getting speeds of:

Its less than half the speed!! If AfriMan can please check out my account for me!

I did a few speed tests last night on my 2mb line after nine. Speeds were all over the place, both capped and uncapped.

The best I got on Capped was about 1.1Mb/s and on Uncapped 0.44Mb/s. I had to find a server that does the best. In my case it was the MTN server down here in Durbs.

Cannot wait for the MTN backbone to come through.
