Shaping continues in CT 6.5% torrent throttle. only managed 3gigs downloaded today, mostly Youtube though; torrenting impossible

The shaping in Cape Town is ridiculous, I have been shaped 24/7 for at least ten days now. Last month I used roughly 100 gigs no problem, what is going on this month?

I was downloading Lubuntu earlier via http and it reminded me of the days of 28k dial up modems.

So you saying people that are doing between 30-100gb are near the top? If so then you should change your leader board and say that those guys are on unshaped packages and show a leader board for people not on business accounts and who get shaped into the ground

The number of people shaped depends on the demand. We also don't want to shape users to death, so the idea is to spread the shaping to have the most minimal effect possible, to give the best overall experience to everyone on the network, while at the same time shaping as little (and as few users) as we possibly can. And remember that at ALL times, we never touch real time, it's mainly aimed at P2P and to a far lesser degree other downloads. After all, it's P2P services that are causing the demand, no other services consume bandwidth to that degree.

As I've mentioned before, we strongly encourage everyone to make use of the hours when demand is low. There is a big chunk of the day when bandwidth is unshaped. After midnight and before 8am there is generally little to no shaping. So maybe schedule big downloads for then. If we all stop trying to use all the capacity at the same time, there will be a lot more to go around, guaranteed :)

What's the possibility that demand is ALWAYS high in cpt? Shaping always the same.everyday 12.5% download and 6.25% p2p. Last month was good.we were better off before cpt ipc. Time to shop for new isp

Got a reply from the Dev team earlier when I was not at my PC about my line and the exchange. I hope they/telkom working on it because this is whats happening now.

If I run a tracert and it times out on the first hop is my router buggered?

It may be, or it could be the connection to the router itself, the wifi could be affected by interference, or if you're connected via LAN cable, the cable could be faulty. Try eliminating those possibilities before going out to buy a new router.

Changed the cable and it still did the same. Could still connect to the router and it showed on my network. Left it off till this morning and its working fine now.

Well if I'm getting shaped after only doing 100gb so far this month then I will not be around AH very much longer.
Okay Seriously
Quite literally 5 minutes ago this was 50%
Mines shaped to 75%
Really unhappy with AH.
Surely that's a bit extreme for a 10Meg Uncapped Account 16 days into the month?

Guys, chillax, the shaping policy really is dynamic, those values jump around all the time. Mine does too. When demand is high, there will be shaping, whenever you have shaping applied, other service speeds remain intact. I can still watch youtube like a boss even with 12% of line speed stuff showing in shaping, its only p2p and torrenting that gets shaped anyway

Shaping is only applied to P2P protocols and the like when network demand is high. This is to ensure realtime services.

When shaping needs to be applied, we shape from the top down. The longer the demand remains high, the more accounts we need to shape. As soon as demand decreases, we start to relax shaping.

Shaping is only applied for the time frame where network demand is high. Each account is re-evaluated every time shaping either needs to be applied or relaxed.

Anybody noticed how AH beginning to sound more and more like ESKOM? Rolling blackouts due to poor forward planning for increased demand!

Definitely! Give away double bandwidth at no cost to the client. Offer bundled deals at ridiculously low prices. Increase network capacity, but decrease cost to client.

Yip, just like ESKOM!

It think the comparison is a little unfair. As I've mentioned, we're mostly talking about a specific time of the day when a group of people experience shaping more than other times. It's not to say that the network is always shaped, and that they are always shaped to the same degree, which is not the case. Our planning takes peak traffic into consideration, but also have to offset that with off-peak traffic, when we have to maintain a large amount of capacity which is not being utilised fully. So it's not simply a case off adding more capacity, but utlising the capacity we have to maximum efficiency.

Afriman

Can you please try find out whats wrong with my international latency? League of Legends ping on AH is never less than 250ms and if i switch to another account it never goes above 230ms.

You did send AM a PM with your details didn't you :-)

Afriman if the shaping were of a sporadic nature as you are implying then I wouldn't have any issues, the reality though is that my account has been shaped 24/7 for at least two weeks now.

The only thing dynamic about the shaping protocol is how severe it will be at any given time, 50% at 3am and 12.5% to 25% for pretty much all waking hours.

Does this seem reasonable to you?

Can't connect to iTunes store.

Anyone else cannot connect to the iTunes store? I can when I vpn to my company, but not on an open line through AH?

It will download App updates but my Ipads and PC will not connect to the iTunes store itself i.e. to find new app.
