Afrihost Uncapped ADSL Feedback

Another day goes by, and my ADSL remains broken. However, I did get a ticket acknowledgement in my email marked Low priority. :wtf:

I'm prepared to stay on a month longer, but I'm unhappy when I see that I'm been shaped so heavily based on doing just 30+ gigs a month? P2P shaping is irrelevant in this case.

I can understand the demand during the hours noted, I can live with 75% downloads shaped, or even 60% shaped. But when I see 25% of my line speed - that is very frustrating. This is going on for over a week. The only thing I can really do with my account is watch Youtube (since its prioritized).

This comes down to my cost vs benefit for my internet usage. Right now, there is not benefit :-/

Please private message me your username and we can see what shaping protocol is being applied to your account.

Sorry for the troubles. Feel free to private message me and I can follow up on the issue. Might have to wait for Telkom to assign a technician. But I'll check for you.

I spoke to a Telkom technician. He recreated my port with the same result. Doesn't sound like he is going to do anything more about it. He says it is a national problem! I am very skeptical. I don't think, across the board, other people are having the same problem I am having, where each connection is limited to 20kB/s.

EDIT: A technician came to the house and checked the line. Perfect connection to the exchange. Also said there was a national problem. I'm still skeptical.

There have been a lot of outages across the country lately, Telkom does seem to be doing something, not sure what it is though.

I am looking for a 1 meg uncapped account in Cape Town.
Was looking at Afrihost, but now worried about Cape Town being overloaded. Do about 100gb per month mainly http, but mainly from home during the day.
Doesn't sound like home uncapped from Afrihost is a solution for me at the moment, am I right?

If you're doing HTTP downloads - I'd say no - there is a lot of shaping here in CT.

You can always take a look at our Business Uncapped. It's unshaped 24/7 and you'll never ever get shaped.

Have you posted a traceroute here? Modem stats as well.............

See this thread: http://mybroadband.co.za/vb/showthread.php/540701-Please-help-with-line-testing

I'm getting a large amount of packet loss on my 2nd tracert hop.

Just now:

Have tweaked the line down to 5Mb/s with no appreciable difference in performance.

Hi Afrihost,

I have a 4mb line syncing at 10mb. The problem is that I can't seam to stream HD on Netflix, Hulu Plus and now Amazon Prime.

This is the stats on my line.

SNR Margin (dB) 9.6 28.4
Line Attenuation (dB) 6.3 18.7

Is this normal? Ps. Based in CPT.

Are you using a streamer or a PC. I've read that the device used influences the quality a lot. PCs seem to lag a bit

@Gatecrasher What modulation mode is your modem syncing on G.dmt or ADSL2+?

Also what is your SNR margin & line attenuation?

Your SNR and line attenuation are good. You are fairly close to the exchange.

What DNS settings are you using to connect to Netflix? Also what device? PM me of you don't want to show it here. I will give you a couple of DNS server settings to try out.

True story

Our offices in PE have a congested Internet connection so much so that B2B almost becomes impossible, i.e. downloading software today for work purposes was coming in at 6.5kb/s, connecting to work/vendor sites is frustratingly slow and we get less actual work done because we are basically waiting, and waiting. I have a spot on the ceiling I stare at, amongst other things.

They won't be upgrading it because they checked the 24 hour usage and it is under-utilized, mainly between the hours of 18:00 and 07:30.

Recommendation from head office management is that we should come in during those hours if we want to work properly and get the websites loading, conduct low latency transactions etc.

Moral of the story - ?

EDIT: Line is diginet and not Afrihost :)

I'm using a Roku 3 via Unotelly, primary is Cape Town 196.41.139.189 and secondary is London 176.58.107.53 Any ideas?

Try 142.054.177.158 primary only, don't set secondary. Not sure how well playback is on roku 3 but that DNS works perfectly on my Apple TV.

You are going to battle with getting full HD on a 4Mbps line, 10Mbps is recommended.
