Afrihost Uncapped ADSL Feedback

So would it be correct to say this is a general indication of the network's state, or is it still being applied on an individual or pool basis?

That's on an individual basis, so the stats will differ from user to user, based on their usage patterns and history.

It doesn't work on thresholds as such. We dynamically shape traffic to get the best performance based on the demand for services. Right now we're managing the demand to deliver the best experience while EASSy is down. We always shape as little as we possible can, and we're still doing that as best we can.

Who gets shaped and to what extent is based on a few factors. We look at usage patterns and history, and we estimate which users should be shaped at which levels to get the best overall experience for everyone.

I understand you needing to shape everyone to smooth out things for a good experience.

Can you elaborate on the last paragraph?

In the case of the user above who's getting 0.51kbit/s - that seems worrying.

if I have a 4meg uncapped business account, what can I expect to do per day/week without being throttled?

I've only just breeched 100GB on a 10mb line, and you sommer knock me down to 5%. Sies, man! :p

Any news on EASSy? Suspect you might've missed my earlier post asking the same...

I don't have any confirmed ETA at the moment. I do know they don't expect it to be down for as long as the "other" cable ;)

So is this merely a visual aid of what has been going on with user connections, or is this a new policy implementation only implemented after eassy keeled over?

I cancelled my R1 promo uncapped account yesterday, but only because I'm rather going to take the bundled uncapped account. (Saves me a few bucks.). But before I sign up, I also want to know what the shaping policies and percentile limits are.

The R1 accounts are not "promo" accounts - they're normal ADSL accounts, so can be bundled or upgraded as per any normal ADSL account. The R1 part just related to billing this month, and they are billed as normal accounts from 1 April.

If you've already cancelled, I guess it's too late, but if not then there should be no need to do so ;)

Good to know. Must say EASSy's website is a bit of an embarrassment though. The sidebar on the left, under the heading of 'Latest News', showcases an article posted in December 2010. :o At least the other cable's operators have been forthcoming with updates.

This is just a visual guide to what the individual client can expect when shaping is applied, at that particular moment in time. Remember that we've had QoS in place since late last year, and we're still using the same policy, just running on a lot more capacity. Right now we're shaping more than we have in the last weeks to control international bandwidth, most of which is torrents and file sharing. From what I understand, some other ISP's hve blocked torrents completely, we're simply shaping for best experience. When capacity opens up, we'll dial down the shaping so you get as much bandwidth as possible at all times :)

Well, we're pretty sure that they're people are all over the issue, so we'll forgive them for not updating their website in favour of fixing the problem. ;)

Let's hope we'll never have to check their website ever again !!

Not updating now? Sure. Not updating in the last two and a half years? Eish... Not a reflection on Afrihost, sure, but hardly confidence inspiring. :D

Maybe the web guys are helping to fix cables. In which case I don't mind that their site isn't updated. :D

Well, I assume if a ship dragged an anchor over the cables in the Mediterranean, a cable layer ship has to sail out and find the break and deep sea divers have to go down and repair it? Or doesn't it work like that? Either way this does not sound like a quick fix? And how do you repair a huge bandwidth fibre optic cable, anyway - there's a little more to it than patching it with insulation tape?

It's a hell of a thing; the cable has to be lifted onto a repair ship's deck at both ends and spliced. Definitely not a quick fix.

Thanks for the feedback AfriMan. I've re-actived my account using the "re-activate" button on the clientzone. All I'm going to do now is bundle it. Can I do that now for the new month?

why is it that when doing a saix speedtest or a normal ookla speedtest for that matter, download speeds are sticky (not a smooth flow), but uploads are smooth as butter?

I'm starting to have little faith in speedtests as watching a saix one, if the little ball in the pipe is any real indication, the download sticks as it goes along for seconds at a time and yet it seems to give the result of the speedtest based on the speed that the test ends at?
