Sorry for the confusion. We usually ask clients to do things via Clientzone and Clientzone 2.0 to avoid situations like this. Did you switch accounts yourself via clientzone? I received your private message, shall investigate the matter

I don't know what's going on atm. I have this very irritating 230ms (220 on really epic days) ping to Europe where I used to get 190 and even sometimes 185. This all feels like it started after the EASSY cable was restored again. It does not sound like a huge difference but it really makes a difference when you are gaming.

I'm back from death's doorstep. Apologies for disappearing on everyone, but once again Afrigirl and our Dev Team seem to have done an awesome job of dealing with everyone's queries while I was away.
For everyone that has sent me a PM over the last week, Afrigirl would have most likely PM'ed you directly with info or assistance. If there is anything that hasn't been addresses as yet, please drop me another PM, and I'll get on it. I'll also be reading through some of the posts through the week to get back up to speed on any issues on the network at the moment.

Can you send us a traceroute? Not sure if you have already done so, but that should tell us where the issues could be.
Upload speeds are controlled by the ADSL infrastructure. The max is currently 1024kbps , which is mostly available on 8Mbps upwards. We haven't got any official stats regarding VDSL, but upload should be at Max 3Mbps for 40Mbps (according to what I've read on Telkom's press releases)

This is only meant for release at 12 today, but I figured since I know many of you have moved over to Business DSL, I'd post a spoiler especially for MyBB.
Business DSL is now GUARANTEED unshaped 24/7! We're removing the Business Hours proviso, and we promise we'll NEVER shape any Business DSL bandwidth, under any circumstances.
A great time to think about moving over to Business DSL, especially if you've been burning through a few Turbocharge sessions a month!

There was no ploy or tactics involved. Shaping is a function of protecting the network, that is it's only function. And it only affects downloads and (mainly) torrents and P2P. Our aim has always been to encourage our clients to get the maximum usage out of the available capacity, which is why we're unshaping business 24/7. Remember we pay Telkom for IPC capacity whether it gets used or not, so we're strongly encouraging clients who want to torrent and file share to use the off-peak hours to schedule their downloads, so that we can truly give everyone the max bandwidth possible on their products.
Thanks for the stock 'shaping policy' reply that we have been hearing 'ad nauseum' but
are the users of normal uncapped going to have to expect even more shaping as your capacity becomes more depleted by the hogs that will inevitabily make use of their new found freedom on 'business' uncapped?

But then there is conflicting information here. "Schedule torrents for after hours". Fine. Why are we still being shaped during off peak times, because the network is under heavy load, but why is the network under heavy load, because afrihost said schedule downloads for that time. You see the massive tautology here? Its an endless viscious cycle.
Also, im still waiting (for about 2/3 days now), for a response as to how this shaping protocols are implented and judged (the whole top downloaders story doesn't work as is clearly shown by posts in this thread).
The network is not generally under heavy load. Shaping is applied only when and where there is heavy demand, and that has been prevalent in the cape area. However, that is only during certain times. I'm fairly confident that pretty much everyone is unshaped between say midnight and 7am, or at least shaped to a much lesser degree if there is still traffic.
Currently, Cape Town's IPC is experiencing heavy demand, especially in the early evenings, where shaping has to applied to manage demand. But usage drops off significantly in the hours I mentioned, and don't pick up again until the following morning, so shaping will definitely be reduced noticeably. At present, other IPCs are experiencing very little to no shaping.
Again, the idea behind unshaping business completely is less about making more money, and more about giving clients more freedom to use the available capacity to it's fullest.
Shaping is always dependant on capacity, and we do obviously take cognisance of the fact that an increase in usage might add more demand on the network. However, we are also trying to encourage more users to make use of the full capacity of the network, rather than all trying to access services in the same time window.
Remember that shaping is dynamic, it's not time based. Users determine when shaping is applied by their usage patterns. We simply allow the network to react to the demand in real time. If more people schedule their downloads and torrents overnight (say after midnight) especially big files or series of files, it leaves more capacity available for immediate fast downloads during peak times.
And it also comes down to a choice of paying for Unshaped per GB or Uncapped VS a semi-shaped Uncapped product.
Good to know that Afrihost have different views to "Off-peak times" than the rest of the world. Fantastic. "Midnight - 7am".
