Afrihost Uncapped ADSL Feedback

Hello Afriman Im seeing high pings again even on local ??do you know of anything??? reset my router yesterday.

We'll need to have a look at a traceroute to check if the issue is local (before our network) or within the network itself.

Can you drop me a PM?

OK, but how come then that when I tried uncapped I was constantly being 'shaped' even though my usage was under 100Gbs and even my one capped account, despite your 'guarantee' that streaming is never shaped (throttled), occasionally, when traffic is obviously heavy, You Tube buffers like crazy at 360p and forget about watching anything on Netflix! It is obvious that this happens because, at certain times of the day/night, demand exceeds capacity and we don't get what we are paying for. Please don't blame Telkom as I have on several occasions, when AH streaming is bad, tried other ISP's and not had the same problem. I used to be able to consistently stream full HD and even 3D movies on my 4Mbps account but those days no longer seem to exist. I want to stress that overall AH used to give awesome service and I long for and live in hope that all the little problems will get sorted soon and you will get back to what you were.

I think I have gone through this a few times, so hope this is not too much repetition. We view capacity on a 24 hour cycle, not by peak usage. There is at least a 9 hour period on the Cape IPC where the is almost no shaping at all, which is more than a third of the day, and shaping fluctuates depending on usage. Other IPCs are not shaped significantly, if at all.

It would give us the greatest of pleasure to add more capacity, but we need to justify it in terms of complete usage and the amount of data that's going to move over the network in total. Right now, the potential data increase does not warrant this, based on the long periods of minimal use. We are strongly encouraging users to make use of off-peak hours for torrents and peer to peer filesharing. This was we can spread usage out and give the maximum amount of usage to clients. We are absolutely happy for every client to get as much bandwidth as possible.

Another thing to note is that the shaper is working at a slight disadvantage. It is constantly making calculations on the least amount of accounts to shape, and the least amount of shaping it can apply to bring usage into line. Sometimes it may take several adjustments to get the usage level right with shaping too harshly. If the usage spike dramatically, users may experience latency and diminished throughput for the time it takes to adjust (which can be 5 to 10 minutes), even on real time services.

Always feel free to drop me a PM, we monitor the IPC's as best we can, but experience is the best indicator. I can always tell you if the IPC is recovering from a spike in bandwidth traffic.

Hey Guys

We've added yet another superhero to our MyBB family. It's not AfriBaby (as some predicted) but AfriGuy.

While he may be a noob to this thread, he's been around MyBB for sometime, and is very experienced when it comes to all things DSL and Web Hosting. In fact, he puts yours truly to shame when it comes to knowledge.

Please give him a warm welcome, and feel free to ask him any questions (except his secret identity) ;)

Welcome AfriGuy!!

Thanks for the warm welcome, definitely excited to be back on the MyBB forums :)
Looking forward to chatting with everyone (again) :p

And yes, the identity shall be secret... even though some of you may know who I am (was)

Let's get this party started!

Not sure why, but in the past couple of days (since the Telkom outage), my download speeds are really bad... around 30K/s

Some of Telkom's infrastructure has been misbehaving since the outage. We're still not sure if this was due to the outage, or related to the cause. We've heard feedback of several exchange cards having to be replaced. Telkom are aware of the issue, but I think at this stage it's best to log faults directly with them.

PM me if your line is with us so that we can get this going for you :(

Hi Afriman. I am in need of a bit of advice. I will be moving into the flat next door to where I live now, and my flatmate will be staying in the existing flat. Why I mention this, is that he is going to keep our telephone line, which is under his name, and I am going to apply for a new Telkom line.

Our current line is telling me that it is capable of 20mb VDSL, and that's what I plan on getting, and then bundling it with one of your capped accounts.

So my question is this: What is the easiest way to order a new line and bundle it, should I order the line through Afrihost, or order, install and get it working with Telkom and then bundle with you guys. I will need it for the 1st of July.

The other thing that I want to know is, can I order a Telkom line and have it installed without having a credit rating? I started my professional career about 6 months ago, so I have previous bank statements, Lease agreement for my flat, etc, and I really want it to be in my name, not my dads, and so on.

Also, are you selling VDSL Routers?

Thanks alot

If you have an address and a bank account they'll happily install

Heya!

It'll be easiest to order it through us, doing it all under your brand new account with your details attached to it :) You will need a Telkom voice (analogue) line up and running which you'll need to order through Telkom unfortunately.
You won't need a credit rating for Telkom, they'll install it and see it in "good standings" as long as it's paid up on time.

We don't have any VDSL routers just yet unfortunately, we're expecting them soon - just making sure they're awesome enough.

Just to add to AfriGuy's reply, Ordering VDSL is a little dicey at the moment from Telkom. Firstly, there are limited exchange ports right now, so not everyone in a VDSL area can actually get VDSL. Secondly, there are errors in Telkom's reporting which shows some areas as VDSL ready, but when we apply they are still rejecting the lines. We're not sure, but they have acknowledged this on their side. So don't rush out and buy a router until it's 100% confirmed that you can have VDSL :)
