Afrihost Uncapped ADSL Feedback

Think they start shaping me on 90 gigs on 4meg line. Downloads came to a nearly zero. If it happens again this month I'm gone after about 5 years with afrihost. Now the 2 dollar Question, whereto?
 
Lol, I bet it was all the capped users trying to blast that cap at the eleventh hour.... Ah, distant memories... Lol

Definitely seems related this time, though their entire network seems to go to pot - even local speedtests were crawling. A simple "We are experiencing unexpected month-end load, please bear with us" would suffice as an explanation - what bothers me is that none is still forthcoming. One would also think, after all these years of this phenomenon, there would be restrictions in place to prevent capped users from destroying the uncapped users' experience (I know, ironic), like there are for the other way round.

However, at least for me, this problem hasn't been confined to the end of the month, even though it coincided this time. I'm still waiting for an acceptable explanation and/or a whole month without going through it again or my money's walking elsewhere.

Sorry for the general response here, I'll also try to look into the individual posts on this thread.

We totally acknowledge that there has been a drastic slowdown in speeds, and this seems to be especially bad in the cape town area. We are currently devoting our top people to look into this, and are engaged at the highest levels with IS to get this sorted out as soon as possible. We don't believe it 's month end phenomenon, as we cater for the "last minuters" in our planning and bandwidth provisioning. But we are looking into all possibilities at this stage, as we have tested several accounts from your PM's and we cannot replicate the results here. We have a standard ADSL line, and we are getting full speeds during office and after hours.

This is not to say the issue doesn't exist, we know it does, and the posts here and test results from your PM's prove that something is happening, and we're working around the clock to find out what that is.

I'd just like to apologise for the problems, we don't expect this to be a month to month phenomenon. I know many of you took a leap of faith to give us a try (after we had performed really poorly on our first time round on uncapped) and it's really horrible that we've run into this kind of issue right at the outset.

What I can say is that regardless of the outcome of this particular issue (which will hopefully be resolved very soon) we have plans in the works to make sure that this type of thing doesn't happen again. And I really can't say more about it at this stage.

Please bear with us, and please be assured that our clients are our HIGHEST priority at all times!

Yeah last night there was some slowdowns on HTTP for sure

yes, it is a joke... You would be routing via jhb servers, so if there is enough bw provisioned by IS in jhb, you wouldnt be having any problems...

Chase IS to provision another 200-400mbps in cpt... simple. :p

I have alreasy requested an office on Clifton beach with a daquiri vending machine ... awaiting Gian's reply :whistle:
 
I'm willing to consider switching to Afrihost for their exceptional pricing of uncapped products. However, reading this thread it seems like it might be a bad idea. My current useage is around 250GB, with the odd exception of 400GB and I play Diablo3 needing pings of sub 200ms. This is achievable with my current ISP.

Will I be able to maintain this if I switch to Afrihost or will I be shaped to death?

You'll never be managed below 1Mbps. There are several issues posted here related to speeds mainly in certain areas of Cape Town, but we have thousands of users enjoying full speeds on their uncapped product.

I'm gonna sign up for that now - will I get this month pro rata and then a full month in September (some other people were saying it...?)

The issues you are reading about here have nothing to do with shaping, but are caused by issues I think in CT. Although I am affected by these issues I still completely recommend Afrihost to anyone. Pleasure to deal with and anyway, isolated issues happen in any network.
 
Just to reiterate what others have said - the issues of the last few days are an exception, rather than the rule. Frustrating because they keep recurring and seem to be undiagnoseable because they are sporadic and - seemingly - limited to the Cape.

The rest of the time I've been with Afrihost (2+ months) speeds are rock solid full speed 10mbps 24/7, which is more than I can say for my past experience with Mweb. Right now, everything is absolutely flying. If it could just stay that way permanently (ie. they diagnose the problems and fix them) it would be incredible.

I personally think this has to do with I.S.'s business rules regarding uncapped on their network.

Telkom phoned me this morning stating they released more bandwidth on my exchange box and I can see it immediately.

The connection is stable again.

Problem is that AfriHost's uncapped is limiting for example my 4mb speedtests locally to CPT to 1.3mb
Using a normal capped Afrihost account it runs at full speed 3.34mb
Using OpenWeb capped account, it runs at full speed 3.36mb

Now I'm not sure if this is a sweeping thing across the entire country or just CPT.
 
I was getting a constant 1mb/s last night on a 4mb/s uncapped line. I only used 49Gb last month and about 120Gb odd the month before - I do not think I was being throttled for such a small download amount? I am in Port Elizabeth. Checked the ADSL line with Afrihost's line testing tool and everything was connecting fine. This morning it was back to normal speed.

I am also in PE - same issue, it's not throttling. Check through the thread for history, we route through CT so affected by anything there (you can see this by doing a tracert)
