Afrihost Uncapped ADSL Feedback

I'm SOOO glad I didn't move to the Afrihost 10Mb/s Uncapped Bundle. It looks like a total bargain, under R900 for both the ADSL line and uncapped internet! But reading about the horrible speeds and service you guys are getting reminded me about the one month I tried Afrihost's 4Mb/s uncapped (when it was first launched). So, I'll stick to my capped account for now.

PS: I wonder how Afrihost can afford offering this bundle. Especially since their Uncapped 10Mb/s (without line) is more expensive on its own!

To be fair, the current problems seem to be on Internet Solutions' side. We're not seeing throttling or FUP violations being enforced - there seems to be some major congestion in and around the Cape Town portion of IS' network, and they are either unable or unwilling to sort it out, pressure from Afrihost or not. I suspect that may have had a part in their decision to move to MTN, but I'm just guessing. Either way, AFAIK the users outside of Cape Town / PE are getting what they paid for - what you're seeing here somewhat skewed, because obviously only the guys on the wrong end of the problems have reason to post.

Personally, I'll probably cancel this month, and give it another shot if/when the prognosis is better.

I also tried Afrihosts 4mb uncapped when they first launched, and even with these CPT problems - it was MUCH worse than it is now. So don't use that as a basis for comparison.

I'm not willing to jump ship just yet - seeing as though they have acknowledged the problem and are working on it, and potentially we'll be shifting to MTN. Price wins for an acceptable service, my downloads still download overnight, and I can still do my work.

MWEB's bandwidth quality is no doubt superior but their prices and their contractual agreements are a real pain (cancelled with them 3 months ago - what a mission)

Hi Afriman

Does cache.afrihost.co.za still work ?

I tried them also to try and save a buck.

They are actually a very nice company to do business with, I must admit. But I could not do proper gaming or Skype calls on the 4mb uncapped.

I have only done 19gb for the month so far and I'm rarely using for the last week.

Kudus to the cancellation department for the swift and professional matter in which they handled my cancellation. I am also back on a capped account with my previous provider and it's been bliss again.

The sad part as Seeyou mentioned is that it's mostly I.S.'s fault that we Cape Town guys are getting such horrible speeds. This in turn harms AfriHost's image to be honest.

Hopefully they will sort out their problems soon, but for me it was time to move on.

Good grief, I saw you asked this earlier and I didn't get around to giving you an answer. And to be honest, I don't actually know :(

I'll check up with our server admin on Monday morning, if that's OK :)

First day on Afrihost 4M uncapped after switching from a competitor...

Uberlame...

Better than my first day, but not to worry, it yoyo's so much that you'll be back up top in no time (though you'll stay there just a little while). It's not an Afrihost issue, it's an IS issue. I made the mistake of thinking IS have improved over the past few years. To their credit, Afrihost and other IS providers have better support than alot of the other guys... though perhaps practice makes perfect.

I have a lot of respect for Gian and his team and I think it's wonderful what they've done for the internet in SA, but I'm not willing put up with the inconsistencies for R200 less per month on the office account - I'm back to Mweb at the end of this month. If I were using my own money, I would use an IS product without thinking twice.

I'm impressed with the speeds

Test conducted on Sat Aug 18 2012 11:12:40 GMT+0200 (South Africa Standard Time)

Download Speed: 3084 kbps (385.5 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 352 kbps (44 KB/sec transfer rate)
Latency: 562 ms

I downloaded at 420KBps nonstop for 12 hours last night! The latency is still an issue (may be something wrong with my setup though :/)

Getting worse...

I can't want to like it AfriMan...

And nobody is manning the call centre and it doesn't allow me to log on to submit a ticket...

Jaded...

Try Openweb again?

I'm on Openweb and I see no difference between this and the Afrihost product. Both are IS. The one difference I do see is that Afrihost throttled my Filezilla FTP connections to my cloud server (as did Mweb) but Openweb doesn't for some reason. Very odd.

I'm also doing good, even during business hours.

But I know I'd be whinging like a pig if it weren't.

Mr Afriman, just need some info please. I am on the 10mb uncapped and I pushed hard at the start of the month and reached over 450GB in the 1st week of the month. I have been throttled and I just need to know how long the throttling will last. I was throttled basically around 7 days in to the month. Will I be throttled for the rest of the month now? How long exactly does the throttling last?

The throttle works on a rolling window total, so if you take a look at your bandwidth usage graph and then hit the comparison option, it give you this month compared to the previous month. As your 30 day window moves, the first day falls off, and the current day is added on (am I making sense?), so you'll need to ensure that usage that is now falling off exceeds current usage, so that your rolling total is getting lower. As soon as it falls below the threshold again, you will be unthrottled, and you would then need to monitor your usage to make sure it stays below. Best to curb your usage as much as possible, the lower you get your rolling total, the more GB's before throttle you'll have for when you really need it - for the "must have" linux distro :)
